      ThePowerStacks if I'm not mistaken until Manfred became commissioner, the Reds were not even permitted to officially retire his number or induct him into their own Hall of Fame. (They unofficially didn't issue his number 14 except briefly to his son when he had the stint in the majors, but were barred from officially recognizing him in that way.) I think Manfred eased some of those restrictions but stopped short of actually reinstating Rose. Though he did, at the same time as he officially denied Rose's reinstatement request, also suggest that he believes the Hall of Fame is a separate question and implied that he doesn't necessarily agree that the Hall shouldn't be able to at least put him on the ballot. But that's actually a decision over which the Hall of Fame has its own discretion.

      I don't believe that a competitor like Pete Rose threw ball games for money.
      It's not as if he was strapped for cash.
      He played the game to win, and he managed the game to win.
      What planet are you living on? Did you ever see the man play?
      He even ran to first base even after being walked.
      We're not talking about the Black Sox, who were persuaded to throw the World Series because they weren't making any money.

      HUGE Difference there. Maybe not to the league, but to his credit anyway.
      When you bet against your team, you are a traitor who will give a lackluster effort in the game, and when you're the player manager as he was, you also have the opportunity to control the outcome substantially by mismanaging your team.
      Neither of which this guy ever did.
      Obviously some of the comments are from people not familiar with his play and didn't see him throughout his career.
      I'm not saying he didn't bet on baseball, but no way in hell did he ever bet against himself or his team and try to throw a game.

Saw him in San Francisco in 2015 watching a little league girls team putting their cleats on in the lobby and getting their gear ready to travel to their game. Rose was standing in the background among the hotel guests, but to himself. The smile and adoration he had on his face as he watched these little girls get excited about the same game he loved as a boy, was truly a beautiful thing to see. MLB trotted him out during the 2015 All-Star Game as one of the four greatest Reds of all time. If he's banned from baseball, then ban him from *everything* baseball. Mark McGwire was subpoenaed to testify in 2005, but didn't admit to using steroids until 2010. McGwire's working in baseball. Rose initially denied gambling in 1989, but, in 2004, he admitted to gambling only during his time as a manager. Just like he said, the stadium is on a *street named after him* and he's not welcome there. I can respect his position regarding the Hall of Fame, even though I don't agree with it.
    I would have never considered myself a Pete Rose fan, but, while he was a player, I respected the hell out of his competitiveness and his accomplishments during a time when players weren't getting the mega-million-dollar contracts players get today. Cobb retired in 1928 after playing 23 seasons. Rose broke Cobb's record in 1985--the record stood for 57 years--and he did it in his 22nd season, one year sooner. One of the many reasons I'm no longer a baseball fan today...

    • @ryanaltfillisch7155
      @ryanaltfillisch7155 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rose may have broken the record in one less season (although your numbers are off as Cobb played 24 seasons and Rose broke the record in his 23rd season), but Rose broke the record in his 3,476th career game and his 15,550th career plate appearance (if going by the official MLB record; if going by the record everyone but MLB goes by you can knock 2 games and 9 plate appearances off that total). Cobb played in just 3,034 career games and had just 13,099 career plate appearances, so Rose did not accomplish the feat sooner than Cobb.

When he was in a nasty hole, I'm sure Rose figured betting on his own team (an outcome he could easily manipulate, especially as coach) was a great way to make sure he didn't get his legs broken. Rose broke baseball's most sacred rule: No Gambling. Bye, Pete.

      @@robertlosasso4222 It is the constant lying that hurt Rose. First he lied about gambling at all. Then admitted gambling on baseball but not the Reds. Then bet on them to win as a manager. He is an addict and no way to know how long he was gambling on baseball. Add in the fact he had questionable associates. People associated with organized crime. Baseball did not want to have another situation where baseball was in control of organized crime or the mob. The mob at this point was still around. Throw in fact that he cannot remember if girl he slept with was legal age. Even tho imo 16 is still too young. Throw in fact every deal he has had to potentially get in he has scuttled. One of which would have kept him out of prison, got his gambling debts forgiven, and eventually let him in. The man multiple times had 6 figure gambling debt. Now I do hold MLB to some extent just as culpable. They knew he was a heavy gambler even as far back as when he came in to MLB

    Pete, rule#1: “don’t bet on baseball, and....DONT bet on your own team”. Not Pete Rose rules, BASEBALL rules. Broke em both.

    Not sure who titled this video, but Pete Rose is not mad at the Reds. The Reds have no say in the fact that he can't come in the clubhouse or go down to the cages, that's due to the MLB policy and will not change until he's removed from the permanent ineligible list. Pete has always been pretty forthcoming about his love for that city, and you can be that Cincinnati and Reds fans to this day love him to death.

      Sure: let's put into the Hall a guy who NOW admits he played most of his career on speed (do "Mr. Hustle" and his on-field bizarre behaviors make more sense now?) and gambled on baseball, even on games he played in. Sure:. teach our kids that nobody cares if you break the rules as long as you succeed. That kind of [excrement] gets us garbage like Trump.

    My father called him Charlie Hustle. He told me to play the game like Pete and I would make a difference. I dove head first, attacked the ball at the plate for base hits and never swung for the fence. Friday nights under the lights with bugs flying around the halogens. The air smelled like popcorn and that sound, that beautiful sweet sound of a ball hitting a wooden bat........CRACK. Jesus I miss playing the game and Mr. Rose is a big part of why.

    Pete Rose uses HIS team to gamble, gets caught, still on "lifetime ban". Thinks MLB should lift ban, because he's a "all-time" best hitter. Angry because he thinks Cincy is using his name to sell tickets.
    Get over yourself, Pete! You "illegally" bet on a sport you were playing in, and got caught. IT'S YOUR FAULT! WHAT DO YOU THINK A "LIFETIME BAN" MEANS? You might be an awesome player, but YOU GOT CAUGHT!! You learned your lesson. MOVE ON!!

    I wonder if Pete ever bet over/unders in baseball? Especially I'm wondering about overs. Leave a pitcher in the game too long.

      Pete lost big money to gamblers. Gamblers will sell their children to keep going. Did he over-use a closer? Did he rest a closer a few games to load up for a game he thought he could win? Who knows what he did to his lineup as a direct result of gambling.

    • @jayberwanger
      @jayberwanger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I don't think most of the public knows about betting the run lines. One last thing, most ball clubs have a defensive specialist. A guy who comes into a game in the later innings. I'm sure Pete didn't use those guys if he had a chance to win a bet.

  • @donnaaspy7467
    @donnaaspy7467 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have never understood what the issue was against a guy who bet FOR his team. We have domestic abusers: Barry Bonds, Aroldis Chapman, Addison Russell, Yasiel Puig, etc., and they get a slap on the wrist or nothing at all and can keep playing. WTF? This man is one of the GOAT's of the game, whose comments are well respected by some of the biggest names in MLB, still can bring in the crowds when he talks baseball, and he can't even attend a Reds game without paying? Total hypocrisy.

    I had said to my Dad and anyone who would hear me, for yearsss, that Pete would write a letter for Petey to read. I hope. I HOPE. In that letter, that Pete/Petey tells MLB to "pound sand" and simply walks away from the mic. Pete and his son too, have EVERY RIGHT to say that.

    What a jerk. I grew up wanting to be like him until he broke the cardinal sin of baseball. Pete doesn't care about baseball. Pete cares about Pete and Pete only. If he really wants back in he would give a sincere apology. People like him don't. I love baseball and the way he played. You've still got to be a decent human being. He's not. Be humble, be respectful of the game. He just steps on it. Period.
