Criminally underrated. People don't give it enough credit because Kraftwerk's sound was completely dated by the 2000s, but they still managed to pull off such a cold-sounding, plodding, inhuman tone while also making it very catchy.
First: I totally like the album. That being said: I don't think it's a coincidence that KW post Bartos don't sound like "classical KW" any more while Karl since then has released some of the best KW style music. To me it's quite obvious (and Wolfgang agreed in a conversation we had) that Karl was much more important to the classic style than Hütter would ever admit today. He sure was more than "just a drummer". ;)
Also - while I personally don't know any of the new member's previous solo works, some of the ppl who do have said that, yes, the TDF-album definitely is influenced by them...
+Commander Kruge Global Mind Prints by Henning Schmidt is pretty good, released after TDFS but you can definitely hear his style. I think it's on sound cloud
To me it seems that today Hütter is in a similar mode to the one Lucas was in before he finally sold Star Wars in a way - always fiddling around with the old classics, creating newer versions - even including adding 3D into the mix at some point (although Lucas kinda failed with his 3D re-release of New Hope). So what's next? Well, I guess at some point Ralf will sell Kraftwerk to Disney as well and then the Robots will be added to the "It's a small world after all"-Ride. ;)
Fun fact: the Alex Gopher+Etienne de Crecy remix of Aero Dynamik is incorrectly credited as the original mix of Aero Dynamik in the Wipeout HD Fury soundtrack. This confused me greatly when I went searching for it the first time.
I remember that remix quite a bit knowing it played on some music channel I listened to back in 2012. Doesn't seem to play anything besides modern EDM now.
The title track sounds like a robot having sex with a bike rather than actually cycling. The breathing just sounds a bit too... passionate, to say the least.
What do you make of Ralf saying that it was over composed and then fixing some of the tracks to how he would have liked to release them originally i.e. Vitamin, Tour de France Etape suite... on 3D: The Catalogue
IMO, Tour De France Etape 2 is one of their finest tunes and generally one of the best electronic tunes overall. I love how they used the same chords from the Prologue track through the whole sequence. It sounds amazing on the album and just out of this world live.
Tour de France Soundtracks is the most underrated Kraftwerk album in my opinion, it sounds so great! I know you probably already get too many recommendations and I hate to annoy you with that too.. :D but it really would be interesting if you could review "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" by The Prodigy.. nearly everyone hates it but I think it is incredibly underrated
Tour de France was the first Kraftwerk song I ever listened to, and the album was the first album by KW I had listened to. For me this album is great and definitely underrated.
Apologies if this has already been asked at any point, but do you have any plans to look at the solo work of Karl Bartos (2003's Communication and 2013's Off The Record) as well as the Esperanto album he did in 1993 as part of Elektric Music? IMO some great stuff there
Of course you have to do the 3D- release too, but please - you HAVE TO also review one of the most important KW related releases ever: Senor Coconut's "El Baelle Alleman" (probably effed up the spelling there). KW never has been so much fun as there - especially when you see them live. :)
Ah, I tried so hard with this one, but I just couldn't get into it. There are some gorgeous synth sounds in it, but nothing on the album has ever actually stuck in my head. Obviously it closes on a classic, but the rest of it just feels so slight to me. The only legally available Kraftwerk album I don't own.
3 things 1) Good Review 2) Stop butchering the French language 3) at 1:28 you laughed at someone important to the band getting in a coma and delaying the album. Don't do that again. But seriously though, great review, my biggest complaint is the French butchering but French can be difficult at times
Talking Techno I don't think laughing about the incident is too bad, since Ralf himself didn't really think much of it, besides it just happening. Also, how would French be to someone who doesn't speak the language? Yeah. I'm willing to excuse that too.

People sleep on this one. It is GREAT!!! 👽👍
Good review, thank you. La Forme is incredible live with the beautiful 3D background.

Don't forget the title track used in 2048.
I remember that remix quite a bit knowing it played on some music channel I listened to back in 2012. Doesn't seem to play anything besides modern EDM now.
I still want to see kraftwerk and daft punk work together. Maybe even make a super group. Kraft punk. Ok now I'm just being silly
Daftwerk.
I'd put Vitamin in their top 5. Sooooo good.
Etape 2 is euphoric. It still sounds fresh today. It's a great track to run to, I used to listen it while jogging. Highly recommend 👌
The title track sounds like a robot having sex with a bike rather than actually cycling. The breathing just sounds a bit too... passionate, to say the least.
I got the horses in the back yeah
Agree with this review, Etape 2 is the first song I listened to from Kraftwerk and it never gets old
Étape 2 is my favourite part of the Tour de France suite.

I have not heard 3D The Catalogue yet so I will reserve judgement until then but I honestly don't see any problem with the album the way it is
Liam Cahill where did he say that?
Zedriodor There was an old interview with him from 2009, I think, on the now defunct Technopop site
IMO, Tour De France Etape 2 is one of their finest tunes and generally one of the best electronic tunes overall. I love how they used the same chords from the Prologue track through the whole sequence. It sounds amazing on the album and just out of this world live.
The whole suite is good for a road trip. Yes, even better than Autobahn.😊

According to legend (and Karl Bartos) when Ralf woke from his coma after his cycling accident, the first thing he said was, " Where’s my Bike?"
Apologies if this has already been asked at any point, but do you have any plans to look at the solo work of Karl Bartos (2003's Communication and 2013's Off The Record) as well as the Esperanto album he did in 1993 as part of Elektric Music? IMO some great stuff there

My favorite KW album. 🍺
You should review Matthew Herbert's discography. He is quite the artist to say the least.

I think you'd like Pan Sonic
In the right context
Pls review More Fast Songs About The Apocalypse by Moby

Thanks! Also when's the top 10 Kraftwerk songs coming?
two more Kraftwerk reviews coming before that one, first is The Mix and Minimum Maximum, then 3-D The Catalogue, then the top 10 :)
Thanks man :D
This guy looks both sixteen and fourty at the same time
Tour de France Étape 1,2,3 and Chrono had way better drops than the entire discography of Skrillex could ever have
RIP Florian Schneider.
fav kraftwerk album

Hunter Tech about the French thing, yeah, agreed. Also I was sorta joking about the incident to
I pronounced all the French in the same way Ralf did on the album lol
The Wonky Angle ah that would makes sense. If that's the case for Electric Cafe (the song) then he did much better on the Electric Cafe
The Wonky Angle Well kinda, but I dont judge! Great review!
