Discussion on Constitutional Promises and Reality: A 16-Year Review by Dr. Shamsul Falaah

SSTV Recording of the discussion session titled "Constitutional Promises and Reality: A 16-Year Review" hosted by the Bar Council of the Maldives, in collaboration with Villa College and Maldives National University, held on 6 August 2024 from 8:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Faculty of Education, Maldives National University.
This discussion focuses primarily on how the Constitution of 2008 progressed over the years. The key areas covered were on the promises of the Constitution, the efforts and challenges to make them a reality. Particular attention was paid to the fundamentals of rights and freedoms, an independent judiciary and the system of governance and the lessons learned in these areas.
The Presentation was by Dr. Shamsul Falaah, whose area of research expertise are in Maldivian Constitutional Law and Islamic Constitutionalism. He was a former member of the Judicial Service Commission, and a former legal advisor at the President’s Office of the Republic of the Maldives.
