- The United States is a federal constitutional republic, in which the president, Congress, and judiciary share powers reserved to the national government, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the state governments. The executive branch is headed by the president and is independent of the legislature.

THE PRESIDENT
The Constitution explicitly assigns the president the power to sign or veto legislation, command the armed forces, ask for the written opinion of their Cabinet, convene or adjourn Congress, grant reprieves and pardons, and receive ambassadors.
THE VICE PRESIDENT
The Constitution gives the vice president the tie-breaking power in the U.S. Senate and a role as the chief presiding officer there, so the first American vice presidents spent most of their time there.
