“The soup” is aviation terminology for being inside of clouds or fog. When you’re in it, it looks like your windows are painted white and the pilot has no way of discerning his attitude relative to the earth except for his instruments. This can be extremely dangerous and cause spatial distortion to the pilot causing him to fly into the earth.
@@PaulRudd1941 not only that he went off visuals and had the confidence on his heli position he states something about the rotors being aligned with the tree line or something along those lines.
I have no idea what you are describing on how to navigate up a mountain sideways looking at your rotor tips and tree tops but God Bless you da man!!! I cannot imagine a DEI hire doing that
I have to say something to all of you, about the comments on this video. I think this is the first comments I’ve ever seen, in any media, without political nay-sayers,or insulting comments about battlefield situations. EVERY comment is pure RESPECT for a brave crew, who refused to leave someone behind. It’s nice to rub elbows with folks like you. 😎
My brother was a crew chief on Helicopter in Vietnam . Purple Fox’s and Pop A Smoke . Marines would load up and set on their flap jacket so they didn’t get shot in the rear . I can’t even think how scared a person could get . This man held together nerves of steel and a heart of gold . Thanks for saving so many lives .
DUSTOFF! One of the best parts of my 45 year career in aviation was working on HH-60M Medevacs. The stories the Army guys, you had to draw it out of them, told where amazing!
These never fail to make me cry. That fear, that bravery, i never skip these, since i want to hear this. I need to hear this, this is why america was so great, up unyil about 4 years ago. No man left behind. Not even bodies.
In 1973 I was at Fort Stewart on night maneuvers. There was a soldier that fell off an APC and his legs were run over We called for a medi vac and they requested an area just so big, that was their minimum, and then park trucks around it at the drip line with their lights on. We found a spot that fit his needs and followed his direction. He flew in , grabbed the guy and left. The next morning in the daytime you could see just how small that area really was. In my opinion those pilots have to be some of the best in the air after witnessing what had happened the night before.
I was evacuating wounded Marines when the door gunner pulled me into the chopper saying; “You’re going too Doc”. I didn’t realize I’d been hit w/shrapnel until we lifted off. Those pilots & their crews had chutzpah in spades.
This is why a ton of these men came back with mental problems. Everything they did that actually worked was extremely dangerous. The nerves I can't even imagine. Im at that age where my dad and a lot of his buddies were over there. What a horrible war. Thank you for your service and bravery
1st Thank You for your Service 🙏 I wonder if you knew a pilot with the nickname of "Bear"... he took some 50 cal hits... He got D/D for throwing a grenade into the back of his chopper... Loved his cheap cigars...

Agreed. I've had 2 friends who were helicopter pilots in VietNam. One was a high school friend, one I met decades later. Heroes.
FATHER GOD BLESS 🙌 OUR MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL SERVICES.
KEEP THEM IN YOUR SIGHTS 🙏 🙏 🙏

@@RyanCampbell-ve1xvhah imagine the viet cong mountains these men were different breeds.
@@RyanCampbell-ve1xv Shits no joke, that’s called Controlled Flight Into Terrain(CFIT) that is precisely what killed Kobe Bryant.
That's insane! He picked up an Evac using only IFR until he saw the tree tops. 😮
@@PaulRudd1941 not only that he went off visuals and had the confidence on his heli position he states something about the rotors being aligned with the tree line or something along those lines.
Isn’t that what caused Kobe’s crash, as well?
