Breakfast With Helen Keller

  • Year 1955. - The famous blind and deaf Writer, and Human Rights Activist Helen Keller and her companion Polly Thomson have breakfast together at their home "Arcan Ridge" in Easton, Connecticut, U.S.A. Then Helen goes for a walk. TRANSCRIPT: Polly meanwhile has brought up the breakfast. Sometimes something is missing from the tray, and it is Helen who goes downstairs to fetch it. Polly knows that it pleases Helen to wait upon her when she can. Everywhere else, except in her own familiar house, it is Helen who must be waited upon by Polly. Here where every table, every chair and every dish in the cupboard is her intimate friend, Helen can move freely and independently. Though in this quiet house Polly need not speak aloud to Helen, she usually does. It helps to drive back the silence. First concern of the day is always the weather, to know how to dress for the morning walk with her dog. Clear but cold. She checks with her Braille thermometer. She is right. In her dressing room Helen is independent. She knows her clothes and where to find them, even to a stray belt. Every morning Helen goes for a walk along a one thousand foot handrail, built by a loving friend to guide her. One thousand feet where she is alone and free. The walk seldom varies. But for Helen it is always full of small unexpected events. Helen has known from childhood what those with sight cannot realize. That one does not need eyes to see the world.

Hi Kim. Thanks for stopping by. It's a pleasure to see you here. This is just a "clip" from an old documentary . Most youtube viewers have a short attention span, (about 3 minutes according to youtube research tests, so I try and keep my videos short. LOL. If you want to see a longer version just type "Helen Keller - 1950's Documentary, Part 1. (Clip)" into the youtube search bar. There are 3 parts to the documentary. Thanks for your interest. Best Wishes! :)

Helen Keller was an incredibly inspirational human being. Her struggles and her triumphs had a deeply profound affect on me when I was a little girl. From her I learnt stoicism and determination, but most importantly, no matter what, to remember that no matter how bad things might be, to remember, that unlike Helen, I had the precious gifts of sight, hearing and could communicate. That I could see and hear birds, the blue sky, the sound of the ocean.. things Helen never could or would. And if that little girl could overcome such difficulties in silence and darkness through her strength of will and mind to learn, to grow, to overcome, then with the benefits of the gifts that I had been given, if she could do it, then I most certainly could. I’m sure that Helen has had that same impact on many, many children over time.. and probably a few adults as well. A very remarkable human being.
Addit: I forgot! My middle name is Helen.. not named for her, but I’ve always been incredibly proud to bear her name.

Extraordinary inspiration. Incredible woman, as were all the women who taught and supported her with such care and respect through her life. I love the notion her that her companion Polly speaks in order to "break the silence". These videos are somewhat twee and a little condescending but they were made with good intentions and gave the audience a compassionate insight into her life and showed her resilience (at a time when disability was hidden behind doors and lives and opportunities were so limited)

Interesting--my great grandfather, Stroud Van Meter, was blinded at 32 in an accident in January 1892 at the rock quarry where he worked. It was believed he was mortally wounded but he recovered except for his sight. His family strung ropes around his property so he could walk around. He could also do some work, used a cross saw to cut wood with his sons. The part in the video where she takes a walk reminded me of Stroud.

It’s incredible! And Anne Sullivan was only 20 years old when she was hired by the Kellers. It’s no wonder this story is still remembered so well to this day.

Well, she was 19 months old when she lost her hearing and sight, so it was almost all she knew. But, yes, she was not quite like the rest of us in determination and spirit. It's a life we cannot imagine if we've always had sight and hearing.

I wonder if she knew how to call her dog and make sure she knew where he was and that he was ok, or if she had to rely on Polly to do that. I wonder how Anne Sullivan might have taught her the difference between yelling out to get someone's attention from far away vs. talking at a normal volume, to someone next to you, and how well she understood the concept. I'm sure she probably did because she was a genius, but I wonder how long it took her to get it.

You believe hellen Keller may have been a genius? She was eithier a hoax or a genius in my opinion, a normal person would not be able to learn anything being born blind and deaf.
