    Let me know what you guys would do, paint it or leave it as is? I'd love to hear from you!

      cold gun blue paste.............

      Phosphate coat it. Rust and scratch resistant, also very cheap to do. I do it on a lot of gun builds.

    As always, I enjoy your very practical and useful projects.
    If you are going to use this vice a few times a month, I would just paint it as it would not be seeing the daily abuse.
    But if you are going to be using it daily or at least a few times a week, I would just keep it nicely oiled. As painting it would cause it to chip and scrape with daily use.
    Keeping it oiled, will prevent it from resting and will keep it working very smoothly.
    Thank you for what you do and keep up the great videos.

    Your builds are so beautiful. This is my dream to one day be making my own stuff just like this 😁

    Looks great. Love the idea. But I have a couple ideas.
    1: bevel the edges before a weld. The end result is stronger, and less grinding.
    2: thread the block that houses the all thread.
    3: for the movable jaw make the lower guide part of the replaceable jaw to minimize welding, parts and potential failure.
    4: powder coat it.
    Just my opinion

    I'd chuck a bit of cold rolled on either side of the threaded rod, and have them anchored to a bar at the back near the handle, so it gives more lateral support to holding things in place, rather than all the holding force been purely in the centre of the jaw.

    Good job, I'm a fan of the raw steel look myself. Maybe clear coat to prevent rust?....ahhh...rust is ok too :D

    I would powder coat it, just to see if it would hold up to shop abuse. And you can turn it in to a new video too.

    Nice. Do you have the ability to anodize it?

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I don't. I thought only aluminum could be anodized?

    My vote is for a nice coat of blue paint to match some of your other equipment.

    No paint
    Also why weld nut to block? Could you have not just threaded the block for your all thread. I luv the channel the wife hates your channel. Each time I watch it either my pocket book get thinner r my tool want list gets longer 😖😁😝

    I think it’s time you purchase a small mill. Would be much nicer to build the handle components.

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's on my wish list along with a bunch of other things, but I am out of space in the shop. Even a bench top mill would be difficult for me to place in the shop right now. Thanks for watching!

    I like this build. However, this is very very far from diy. You have used thousands of dollars worth of tools/machinery to build this.
    Not sure who has a Lazer jet cutter, lathe, ect sitting around. Once those type of tools are used, I do not consider it diy.
    Oh, and using a drill press vice to make a drill press vice.... hahaha
