There is a funny story regarding the "Steal Away" riff you were playing. Randy use to use that riff as a warm up exercise. One day the band was working on writing songs and Randy was in his room warming up playing that riff. Ozzy busted in the room and said 'What the hell was that?" Randy said that he was just warming up. Ozzy said "Write that down. That is going to be our next song." 😂
There's a tape of RR with a student and he mentions he auditioned for Quiet Riot i think it was and was only concentrating on soloing. When he was asked about his song writing tho, he realized how important it is to be a good songwriter, not just a great soloist. I think he and EVH exemplify this to the max!
Steal Away just an awesome song filled with awesome riffs. And No Bones movies is like a heavy metalized 60's pop rock, that worked out realy well; its the wrench in the gearbox of a metal setlist but, man, it's such a fun tune.
the genius of Steal Away the night is the double and triple tracking he does especially on the solo, but not on the entire solo, Sounds like 10 guitars on the end part of the solo... No Bones Movies was added in place You Looking at me, looking at you to get Lee a writing credit
Love the analysis on the great Randy Rhoads.......a great solo does not mean much if the song is not as great too. His rhythm playing is underappreciated. People forget he never tried lead until he was a teen despite playing guitar for 6 years already.
I like what you said at the end about listening to Randy's stuff and learning....George Lynch did an interview not too long ago where he talked about how much Randy grew from Quiet Riot to being in Blizzard of ozz, and he said he could listen to those two albums and take a deep dive and learn a lot.
Hahaha 🤣 welll... I am trying to make this channel a place where one could hang out and get their dose of heavy metal guitar goodness so I appreciate that a whole lot. Thank you!! 😊
I think you perfectly covered the one thing about Randy that was 100% better at compared to EVH. Randy certainly would have found even more fame after moving on from rock music.
Bob helped with the business side of things for Randy, he did not teach Randy anything musically. The difference is with Quiet Riot the label was dictating terms and KEvin was involved. Ozzy handed the keys to the car to Randy and let him go with the direction and riffs. Bob helped put songs together for sure, but Randy's explosive growth came between the recording of BOO and DOAM as he took classical guitar lessons and stopped partying
The best investment any RR enthusiast can make is buying the Tab book for the Tribute album. One thing is studio Randy, and a whole other monster beast when live. Btw, the new Marty Friedman album called Drama is a MUST listen for us guitar players. You will not regret it.
That's one tab book that was transcribed quite well from what I remember. I had it back in the day and it was one of the books I had taken with me when I had moved back to Italy... Unfortunately it was destroyed when a male kitten peed all over it 😅😂😂 So it's been 20 years since I've seen it, but from what I remember, the fingerings weren't always right, but I think a lot of the notes were pretty accurate.
no, it used to be that, but really the investment is the bootleg is a bootleg called Bat's Head Soup, unedited and has the actual spotlight solo not the hatchet job on Tribute. I believe every Randy Rhoads fan/blizzard of ozz fan should listen to the bootlegs of the shows so they can hear how much he was evolving as a player and how he changed every song every night. He would try stuff out here and there from the early days trying out various solos. I post the bootlegs of each show in the legacy group.

There are definitely bits of QR songs on both Ozzy albums. Slightly reworked, of course, to make them fit the band's sound better and also because Randy was evolving rapidly.

It's like anything else that one might study. Randy's stuff had some complexity to it, especially for the genre at the time, but it was still buildt on basic music principles. On the other hand, understanding why a musician might do choose a particular set of notes, phrasing or arrangement does require a bit more experience with songwriting and analyzing arrangements. I've been doing that since I was 9 years old and I've been playing for almost 40 years...
