I love how people use this song as their defense when speaking on behalf of today's "country" music. Little do they know, Hank despises computer generated hip hop beats and rapping, which can be found in every modern mainstream country song.
He's talking about modern country music circa 1987/88 (i.e. pre-"New Country" and Garth Brooks), which is nothing at all like the "young country" of 1998, 2008 or 2018. The business model and paradigm of country music, like that of all popular music, changed radically and irreversibly around 1990-1991.
People that defend new country need to understand just one thing. When Hank wrote this song, people making the then new country music, were actually country. In this decade many country singers' background aren't country and many singers are more of the pop star variety. I've completely lost faith in new country.
