The Hudson River Ice Yacht Club put out classic stern steerer iceboats on the Hudson River at Athens NY for one weekend between January 24th and 27th, 2025.
@@dennismclaughlin206 No, we had to take the boats off the ice in Athens. We only got the one good weekend. The Ice was minimal and ice conditions change quickly on the always moving tidal Hudson.
January 25 - Ah, nothing like watching folks gracefully ice skating, ice boating, and just strolling around like they own the frozen Hudson. Classic winter magic. January 27 - An ice race? Now that’s a sport I can get behind. The thrill, the speed, the occasional wipeout-pure joy. January 3 - Oh… oh no. Turns out, the river had other plans. Everyone fell through. A tragic, icy demise. Well, that escalated quickly. And now, enter the Crystal Ball, whispering sage advice: • Safety? The Hudson’s got currents, tides, and a mean streak. The ice might be thick enough-until it isn’t. • Ice Thickness? Saltwater, tides, and the occasional warm spell mean your “solid” surface might just be a very convincing illusion. • Weather? Yeah, turns out Mother Nature doesn’t check your weekend plans before deciding to ruin them. Moral of the story? Ice is nature’s way of saying, “Sure, you can walk on me… but should you?”
The answer is usually no but occasionally yes. The yeses are getting few and far between but do still happen. This only increases the value of the yes days for those who are patient and persistent
😁Thanks for sharing this. Are they going to sail this weekend?
