    That rig is designed to be serviced, isn't it?
    PCMCIA slots? I just found a bunch of those cards from years ago. Do many folks down under still use those things?

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah PCMCIA is a years old thing, expresscard never really took off.
      there are some really handy pcmcia cards like osciliscopes and esata adaptors etc. just finding them is hard.

    Great video but. You would get more fps in minecraft if you take your render distance down from maximum

      @@MOLDIA1 i do have it down, close to minimum. I don't really play mc on this anyway. It's my field editing machine. Also using a hacked client.

    @The Aussie Repair Guy have you had a situation where you do this video card upgrade and when you plug in the charger it blows something and you can only run it off battery from that point onwards?

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only have one laptop - this isn't my day job.
      but generally if you kill the charger when connecting it, several possibilities may be the case: 1 - you may have shorted the power socket internally, 2 - the charger may have been close to death, or 3 - the poly fuse in the charger or laptop has died.
      if the laptop continues to function from battery, it's most likely not a laptop issue, I'd check to see if the charger still working with a multi-meter.

      I'm yet to find an SSD that fits the Wan card slot, but I think that would be a good one too.

      There are really only two options for video cards, I chose the Geforce GT720M.
      They are hard to find, but this is one I found - there are probably cheaper deals though:

      There's a few version out there with different hardware. For my use case it works to dowload files for cameras, browse web and do a few minor video edits.
      Its not by any means a gaming laptop.
      Butbit works to keep sand, and a little water out which has been handy.
      It would have to depend in what your use case is.

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't done my homework into upgrades like that, but it looks like it's an option.
      In my case the cost of a second hand unit was less than a motherboard.

    Does the updated cooling system really impact the temps? All I see is two extra screw holes

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't seem to run much hotter to be honest, however that may be thermal throttling, or just the video card being more efficient than cpu rendering. When rendering 4k it runs the fan much more, but does the job much faster. Overall the efficiency on the task seems to be outweighed by the reduction in time.

    pcmcia express card 54 mm the one you showed in video is suitable or not for dell 5404?

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      They apparently came with both as options, I later found out mine has standard pcmcia.
      The slot is not express card.

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy

      I'd have to research it on google.
      Dell however have very detailed service manuals on their site that cover these things in detail.

    I had no idea you could replace the wireless lan card with a SSD but if you do that what do you do about wifi/bluetooth

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this case the bluetooth is a different card to wifi. So I can use one slot. However mini usb wifi dongles are a thing too. Its an option on lots of laptops if you can find the right size and keying of ssd

    • @mikeadams78
      @mikeadams78 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAussieRepairGuy I think my version of that laptop is different same model number. But a few missing things and only Intel 4400 graphics. It has something on it stamped DVD RW but for the life of me I have no idea why cause there's no slot for a DVD drive anywhere on it.

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeadams78 Yeah they made a bunch of different sub-variants as far as I can tell.
      It happens with stuff aimed at corporate and defense markets - something about security risk by making the hardware identifiable from the outside.

    can i upgrade card on y dell 5414 i want atleast 1060 on it

    • @TheAussieRepairGuy
      @TheAussieRepairGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They only take specific size and types of cards, and there are very few options. for the 5404 there were only two video cards made and they were very hard to find.
      here's a link to the 5414 service manual for the GPU.
      Looks like you might only have a GTX720 as the best available option, but perhaps contact dell to see if there is anything else.
