    So relatable, I also just recently broke up with a long term gf and in addition lost my software engineering job to layoffs. I hadn't felt this lost since I when I began coding 8 years ago. I was feeling burnt out and also felt that setting goals was cheesy. My advice to you ( which will probably not register, since advice is futile to a cloudy mind ) is to focus solely on the body and mind. This will keep you challenged, and also build healthy habits for when you start working. You always "come" first. 😂

    Don’t worry Pan, I felt similarly to you when I graduated. The adult world is more undefined than school since there’s fewer explicit milestones to mark your success. No more tests and a lot more open ended problems with no right answers.
    Things will get better once you start working and focus on the journey rather than the outcome. Just enjoy the ride and strive for excellence

  • @Att4ni
    @Att4ni ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is really affirming. I'm at a similar crossroads where I'm doing my first internship and it's making me question some of my own goals.
    The way I see it, don't think of things as "goals" because that's too big to break down and ends up deterring us from progressing. When I started learning a new language, it was never because I wanted to become fluent at that language. Sure, I knew that if I stuck with it eventually I'd reach fluency, but the goal was never what drove me. I'm sure to an extent, the idea of being a TH-camr isn't what drives you, but the journey of sharing video after video, building a community, watching those subs go up, and reaching a wider audience might. It seems like you're spiraling with no real end in sight, but that's where you'll have to regulate your own learning and seek internal validation to continue moving forward and growing on your own terms.
    But also, this is a good time to just relax. Congrats on graduating! Pick up candle pouring as a hobby idk. It's a good time to just exist with no expectations!

    I was burned out on my last year of college. I thought once I graduate, it will get better. But working in the software development field, it just feels like I am working on one continuous group project, it just felt like school 2.0 where I am getting paid instead of paying for it. It has been almost 3 year year since I been working, and I come to feel a lot better just taking life slowly as it comes. Like I still have flexible goals in my life like what I want to do for career growth, when I want to buy a house, and other plans and ambition. But finding a good balance between career and ambition, and personal interest and hobby had really helped me just come to enjoy life a lot. Because not everything needs to be driven by reasons, sometimes it is perfectly fine to do something just for the joy and love of it.

    • @cocothechonk
      @cocothechonk ปีที่แล้ว +3

      How do you personally find time for hobbies and overall, personal time for yourself? I tend to have a hard time with this and just wondering if you have any tips of finding a good balance with work and personal time.

    • @MichikoHoshi
      @MichikoHoshi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cocothechonk Well, I can only speak from my own experience since I don't know about your personal situation. But I use to let work bleed into my personal time, where I felt like I needed to spend time outside of work sharpening my coding skills or completing work outside of actual working hour rather than just saying, "It will take another day for it be finished" during a stand up meeting. Now, I just work 7-4 with an hour lunch break from. I try to be as productive as I can be in the 8 hours of work and the rest of the day is for myself. Obviously with a big portion of my day spent on work, I don't really have the time and sometimes energy to do a lot of things on weekday. I try to fill this time with hobbies that I can start and stop anytime, like games, youtube, chatting, etc. Then on days off like weekend or PTO, I try to make the most of my time with spending it with friends, scheduled tabletop games, going bowling, or learning to draw. So really, just boils down to time management, drawing a line between work and personal life, personal fitness and a proper sleep schedule also helps with feeling drained after work.

    Hey Pan, just started following your channel and I’ve binged watch most of your videos. Anyway, like you mentioned we all want to be productive or have some type of “special” meaning in our life. We are constantly looking for this gratification. This later can become an obsession. I had this same mindset and my advice to you is this. Don’t forget to live in the present, and you’ll be surprise that you can find joy in the most simplest of things. A walk at the park, going for a run. Hope this helps!

    Pan: You're in this super liminal place right now, transitioning between two phases of your life. You know that weird feeling you get when you finish a months-long code project? Same deal, but 1000x bigger.
    I'm glad you're planning to take things easy on the bigger life goals for a bit. Taking the time to work on your mental health and just chill for a bit is 100% the right direction.
    Only suggestion I'll make is: try not to get stuck in a rut. It's so easily done. Make time for friends and family, try out new and interesting things, and always have at least one thing in your life that requires active engagement instead of passive consumption. That's a lesson I'm still struggling to internalise.

    You do well to ask yourself these questions because time will go much faster than you realize, it is a source of anxiety. You don't need to find a goal but an horizon and these are completely different, this is your life now not an economic or management class. Goals are all about key indicators, competition and production, insignificant objectives in the grand scheme of things, the second is about the travel. You don't drive a boat like you drive a car, you need to seek the winds, steer to a direction long before the vessel will actually start to turn and last but not least if ever lost do not worry too much, just stick to a cap on your compass that way you will always find a land.

    Relatable..
    I thought I was done but no, I have to pass my licensure exams so here I am stuck in the middle as well..
    After all the stress from college med, here I thought I was finally free after graduating.. I realize it was all a lie, you’re not really free not unless you have this sense of purpose. Right now I’m just aimlessly going with the flow. I also think it’ll go away once I start working tho.

    I've pretty listen to Andrew D. Huberman cause one its quote hit me. It's about something like dopamine and keeping your excitement always open no matter what situation is. And that is kinda hard for me tbh, but I have a power to ignore a lot of things bruh.

    I am in the SAME situation as yours... I recently broke up with my gf, in a good way but it sad as hell. I graduated recently and I have a new job I don't start yet, as a Programmer.
    It is strange, in some way I reach all the goals I had in mind, and I don't khow where I go now, but it is part of the life.
    In these times, it is important to give time to yourself, share time with tour friends and family and try things that you always wanted but you didn't have time to made them actually, like travel and discover new places, try a new hobb, activity or sport, start a new project...

    You should focus on what makes you happy now. Work is the fuel to do what you want to do with your life. Watch what other people do that you meet at work or come up with your own original ideas. There are infinite possibilities out there in the world the best thing you can do is explore, discover, meet and talk to other people!

    All the bullshiting aside. I feel you man. It's like after I graduated with my computer science degree, I was like what's next? I kinda felt blank for a while. Now I have found some interesting things I want to work on, plus I have my job, and some fewer goals from the past that are still lagging so I am trying to get that done and over with it. When I was still in school I feel like I had direction. Study, write exams, pass, go to the next grade. It was all planned out. After graduating you kinda feel like you are floating and there's no signs of direction to point you at.
