Organic versus Synthetic dye…..great reminder…..the time lapse was FUN….the marbling colorations were beautiful….!….really excited to see what plans for the fabric…..
It looks easy enough. Just choosing the right colors and keeping the ice piled on top seems to be the hardest. I've never thought of dying my cloth but it does make some wonderful colored fabric.

Wow! Your dye job came out beautiful! I need to try this, of course I know that no matter what I do, short of donning a hazmat suit, I will make a mess of myself (it's just the way I roll...). Ford, how would it work if you dump the dye powder into salt shakers (smaller holes) and then applied the "sifted" dye powder to the ice? I would think you would get a more even distribution and layering different colors would be easier.
Thanks for the cool idea! Could you talk about different fabrics and how to stitch them? Like, what is 2 over 1, or 1 over 2 whichever it is. Or linen? I have only used 14 count aida cloth and dish towels. Thanks

The synthetic dye does not really work on natural fibers. It might leave a small amount of color but mostly just from soaking into it and it won't be color fast.
For a small piece of fabric like that, may I recommend using a metal sieve suspended over a bowl or pot? It's a lot easier to keep everything contained.

Most people who do this say no, but I've absolutely done it! You just have to be careful to distribute the dye. I used a large syringe to dribble it around. To do get a pretty different texture to the color that is fun! My favorite pieces were done using a combination of the two.
Fabulous video. I've heard of "ice dyeing" but I could not imagine how it would be done. Would you consider showing coffee/tea dyeing? And maybe on a non-aida fabric? I am curious to see that technique. Loved seeing Caramel! Hi Nugget!
There is absolutely no way that I would do this. I need colour to be applied consistently over all the material. If I want tie dye, I have to buy it already done. Just saying!😂😂
Definitely not a technique for the control freaks among us! I like the natural variations that happen but they're not great for every project for sure.
