    Thanks for visiting my channel, I hope you enjoyed the video! I founded Caterpillar Cross Stitch in 2015 when I tried desperately for months to find a modern baby sampler my mum could stitch for new baby Felicity that would fit in with her simple, contemporary nursery. I love cross stitch, running, baking fruit cakes, drinking gin, eating salted caramel ice cream and most crafts!
    See you soon and happy stitching! Sally x

    Dear Ford, I've only just noticed that you answer every comment. That must be very time consuming, but as a recipient, thank you. It makes me feel very special from a very special person.. Just a heart will do instead of a comment for this.😂

    I've been cross-stitching for 35 years and I still watch these 'beginner' videos because I never know when I'm going to pick up a useful tip. Today it was keeping a sharp needle on my needleminder to pierce the fabric when I need to. I have a 14ct kit that has a TON of fractional stitches and it's just painful to get that size 24 needle through the middle sometimes (literally, I can't tell you how many times I've jammed the needle into my finger). Tonight I'm going to grab one of my hand sewing needles and see if that doesn't make it easier. Thanks Ford!

    Why have I never received the genius advice about the last digits of the fabric count and the needle? Mind blown!

  • @lisaboban

    I've been doing a lot of "over 1" stiching on 25 and 28 count fabric. I find a slightly larger needle (26 or 24) actually works best for me. But it does make the process of running the end of the threads under stitches more difficult. So I use that trick of switching the needle too! But I've also gone back to your pin stitch video and I've been using that method lately. Thanks for always teaching me something!

      I agree that a larger needle than the conventional wisdom would suggest is often helpful here. Glad you're finding my videos useful! I do love feeling useful. Thanks for watching!

    Was wondering your thoughts on the Sullivan ball tip needles. Haven’t yet tried them myself.

    • @SonovaStitch
      @SonovaStitch 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I've used them before. I really like them when working on black or dark colored fabric especially; it's much easier to see the tip of the needle when trying to find the correct hole on the underside of the fabric.
      They're kinda expensive and the finish on them wears off quickly compared to the Bohin needles that are my favorite.

    I have been using Aida cloth from Joanne’s, but recently bought some from Michael’s because I had a rewards voucher. The same needle used on the Joanne’s cloth falls out of the Michael’s cloth, and the Michael’s cloth is also stiffer. I had no idea there would be a difference, I prefer the softer cloth from Joanne’s.

    • @SonovaStitch
      @SonovaStitch หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it can vary pretty wildly, which is why any hard and fast rules on needle sizing should be taken with a grain of salt.
      Also worth noting that the store brand aida from Michael's (Loops & Threads) is often very badly uneven weave. That is, the number of stitches vertically can be pretty different from the number horizontally. This can really mess up sizing on projects, make elements that are supposed to be round into ovals instead, etc!

      @@SonovaStitch Thanks for the tip on the Michael’s brand. I’m sticking to Joanne’s.

    I use 26 and 28 size needles. My problem is getting them mixed together and not being able to tell wh8ch size they are. How can I quickly know what s8ze a needle is? They look so similar.

    • @SonovaStitch
      @SonovaStitch หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, there's always a pair of calipers! But different sizes are both different lengths in addition to thickness, so if you have some of known brand and size you can compare their lengths, but both dimensions will vary between brands.

    I’m going to start a Christmas cross stitch picture and I want to use metallic floss for the lights on the tree. I cannot find yellow metallic floss. Would it hurt if I put JUST ENOUGH Wink of Stella on it to give it sparkle? Thank you for your time.

    • @SonovaStitch
      @SonovaStitch หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't guarantee, but I think if you put some on the stitches in question VERY LAST
      (after stitching, washing, pressing, and framing) it would probably work okay! Alternatively, you could try DMC e3821, e746, or possibly c725 (etoile).

      @@SonovaStitch Thank you for answering so soon! I will give it a try (on a scrap piece). I can’t remember what I got just in case. I looked SORT OF like metallic but it isn’t. I’ll have to look it up. Thank you for your time! 😁
