Hope you're all enjoying week 2 of Hawktober 2019! 🛹 QUICK NOTE on THPS2 iOS: The port isn't included here for a few reasons, mostly because it isn't available to download anymore. But it's also just got nothing to really say. There are so many of those ports onto iOS, even GTA San Andreas can be played on iOS so it's nothing special to talk about. So I opted to skip it in favor of more time being spent on lesser known titles. Thanks!
I see. I thought you'd at least acknowledge it quickly in the video as you did for other unplayable installments that were similar to previous ports. I never knew San Andreas was available as an app!
I felt the exact opposite of physical pain when unboxing the N-Gage copy. That felt good, I never like things being kept wrapped up, considering the whole point of games is for them to be played & enjoyed.
I don't mind that happening to extremely common/cheap games (sometimes SEALED copies can be more common than opened with unpopular games) or if it's used for review/documentation purpose but anything that's been sealed for more than 20 years or exceeds $100 in value should stay that way, it's like a relic at that point. Not to mention If the game inside also absolutely terrible shovelware than there is nothing to gain from opening it. Especially with ancient stuff like the 2600, I PHYSICALLY could not have ever seen that on store shelves, because I wasn't alive anywhere near then, so it means a lot to me to that those be preserved so that people in the future can see it in that in that state.
As a former N-gage collector, THPS1 N-gage is extremely common anyway. A non-sealed boxed copy is around $15 at most on eBay (IIRC I bought one for around $5 at a convention in 2016 but I'm not certain), and a factory sealed copy goes for around 30. If it were Elder Scrolls Shadowkey or something then yeah it'd be better to keep it that way (especially since you can pirate games on N-gage fairly easily) but THPS is nothing.
I truly admire your dedication to looking at every single THPS title including the mobile ones. I remember the N-Gage version when it came out. I'm surprised they didn't attempt to release this port onto the DS or even the GBA. If it ran as well as the N-Gage version, people definitely would've bought it.
@@SquareEyedJak Yeah, the same reason why the iOS port of THPS2 is no longer available. By the way, sorry we didn't catch up at PAX that weekend. By the time I saw your comment on one my recent videos, it was too late, my bad.
Hell yeah the N-Gage version of Tony Hawk is pretty damn fun. The only portable classic Tony Hawk done right if I'm not mistaken. I have my N-Gage charging up right now for some Tony Hawk and then maybe some King of Fighters and Sonic N.
I would NOT be that surprised honestly. the closest thing is that Tech Deck has had countless ramps and fingerboards with Tony Hawk/birdhouse branding.
The N-Gage version of Tony Hawk will always hold a special significance to me as I was the Danish winner of a big event Nokia held back then and I in the end went to France to compete in the game. I didn't really get anywhere in that competition but it was a lot of fun and I even got myself an N-Gage before everyone else. Sadly the N-Gage itself stopped working after a couple of years but the bag that I got as part of the competition is still in use 15 years later. That's some goof craft xD
It’s such a shame that some older Java games are completely lost. Even if they’re terrible, they’re still part of gaming history and deserve the spotlight, even if it’s just for a minute.
They were really trying to collect as much as they could with every Tony Hawk game. It's still great to see how they used their creativity to work around the limitations of these handheld devices.
You should review the honorary Tony Hawk's games for the next Hawktober, including the Mat Hoffman games, Disney's extreme skateboarding, Shaun Palmer's pro snowboarder, and Kelly Slater pro surfer.
I'm guessing until the final episode of this year says so, that it's either going to be one or the other, knock-off/copycats like Grind Session, Simpsons Skateboarding and maybe even the Skate trilogy, or other extreme sports titles released by Activision to be companions to the main Tony Hawk games, such like the ones you mentioned.
I always wanted an n gage. In fact I still do haha. Also I think thps2 came to iOS very briefly a couple of years ago but then just vanished. Not sure why.
Tony Hawks Shred Session was actually quite fun. It has missions (or sessions) with kinda like classic mode tasks (combo, skate , highscore, secret tape) as well as endless (runnner) mode where you basically earn money by doing tricks. The only thing you were spending money for were tricks and new locations, but I remember enjoying this game a lot
Anyone remember back when Project 8 was about to come out - the game's website? It was a Flash thing, Tony would skate in, say the name of the game and skate out. Back in 2006 it was a big deal to see an FMV inside a website so I distinctly remember it, corny as it was.
I remember our video game TV show covered lots of mobile games in 2000s. I recall being very jealous that we didn't have phones that could play them. Now that I think about that time, concept of digital storefronts was unknown to me at the time. Seeing how some are lost to time, makes me fear upcoming streaming services like Stadia and subscirption services like Game Pass, preservation is going to be even more difficult.
Even though 4:27 made me die inside, I really enjoyed the video as always! As someone who has only played (and loved) Underground and Underground 2 on their respective releases, it's really interesting to see all these obscure games starring one of my role models. Cheers, Jak!
So, the briefly-mentioned lost mobile port of THPS1 actually does have some more info on it. Jeff Gerstmann reviewed it on Gamespot when it was new, and there's also some info on it in the book "Tony Hawk's Gaming Domination" -The port was renamed to "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: 3D Mobile Edition" -It was released at around the same time as American Wasteland -The levels had additional goals, such as higher scores and combos -Had online leaderboard support -Since some phone d-pads didn't allow for diagonal input, tricks that used diagonals in the original were instead done by pushing two directions in sequence like a special trick -Almost all copyrighted content was completely removed. No licensed music whatsoever, and every skater besides Tony is replaced by likenesses of the game's programmers (whether they're the programmers of the port or the original I don't know) IIRC it was released exclusively on Verizon's discontinued subscription-only V-cast service, and if that's true then it's absolutely lost to time. Also, unrelated but I'm surprised you didn't mention that the N-Gage port soundtrack slipped in the uncensored version of Euro-Barge.
All I can say is, Tony Hawk on the N-Gage looks pretty impressive for it's time. It's rare to see console version of a game on a mobile phone at the time, with nothing being cut out and running pretty well with no frame rate drops.
As a kid I wanted an N Gage just for THPS and Crash Nitro Kart. I had other versions of each, but at the time I had no portable device that could emulate PS1 games, and while the NG version of CNK was based on the GBA version (that I own) and its simplified track layouts, it did get an upgrade from the flat 2D tracks seen on the GBA to 3D terrain. Plus, the N Gage version includes the extended soundtrack that was previously exclusive to the Japanese GBA release. Alas, at the time my parents deemed me too young for a cell phone, so I may never see an N Gage game in person.
You really did cover the N-Gage and Zodiac ones! Yay! I actually didn't know the Zodiac version of 4 was pretty much the GBA game. The graphics are so much better, and I think that's why I thought it was a different game. Really surprised at the positive thoughts you gave the N-Gage version of the first game. I mean, I love it, don't get me wrong, but I thought that was just my nostalgia goggles. Yay!
every episode of these videos have Smackdown here come the pain music in them. making me wanna play a season mode with sean 'o' hare for the 15th time. also pretty good videos rock princess.
Fun fact about the N-Gage: according to the guy who created the final design (who created said design right before leaving the project due to being fed up with mismanagement and meddling), he based it on fucking Goatse as a joke and didn't expect the execs to actually choose it.
Here's something else to note, before Shred Session and Skatejam, Pro Skater 2 was re-released on iOS in 2010. It's more or less a port of the PS1 version with touch controls so it's nothing special, but it's good enough if you want some Classic Tony on the go, granted you still have it installed on your old iPod touch or whatever
Tbh i'd play the everloving hell out of a Tony Hawk endless runner game done well. Skateboarding and endless runner games seem like a really good combination.
You may be able to fix your Ngage not turning on by removing the battery, stripping a useless usb cable & using tape connect the red wire to the + & black wire to -, plug in for a bit n keep checking the battery doesn't get too hot, reinstall battery & check if it works. Mobile batteries go into a sleep mode after years of inactivity
Honestly, it's fucking impressive seeing what the N-Gage version managed to pull off. I was expecting something similar to the GBA titles, like Nitro Kart was on the system. So it's nice to see that they were able to port the console version onto such an obscure device.
Avoid publically scoring mobile games because even if something is good, it'll still end up with low score. But THPS on N-Gage would probably get a 4/10.
17:57 In fact, there are better versions of this game than the difference in scenarios IS MASSIVE, old mobile games have very different versions depending on the resolution you are playing (240x320 are the best)
"A neat little device" as someone who was a teen at the time you where a laughing stock if you had an N Gange.. There where two guys in my school who had them because they bought the hype and.. Yeah they didn't bring it to school much after the first few days
Downhill Jam's mobile port is actually awesome for mobile games standards. It was made by Fishlabs who were the best at 3D mobile games. Sure, it's janky compared to the console games, but it's expected for this platform and, especially, for mobile controls
I didn't know Nokia did a device called N-Gage....I guess I have been living under a rock all this time. XD I'm interested to see what the game on Android will look like, to be honest I haven't seen it on the Playstore even if it was released last year so I'm looking forward to it and I might even check it out myself. I've always wondered about the mobile versions since I missed the train on those and I can't even fathom how you can play such a fast-paced game with touch controls. Eugh.
I've tried Tony Hawk's, Asphalt and Tomb Raider on a friend's N-Gage. Not going to lie, I really liked that thing. It's a shame, if Nokia would have focussed on making it a dedicated handheld and not a weird phone/handheld hybrid it could have been a success. The tech behind it was impressive.

You forgot the iOS version of THPS2
Been watching this guys videos for 3 days now. Not sure why. But I'm thinking my 13 year old self found a man who is stuck in his 13 year old body to play 13 year old games.
You missed pro skater 2 for iPhone. That port was THE shit, i played ist for hours. It was just like pro skater 2 and the controls worked suprisingly well.
