- The Ford Shelby GT500 and the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing go head-to-head in our U-Drag series. In this drag race video, Ryan ZumMallen from Edmunds heads back to the track with the 2022 CT5-V Blackwing from our first drag race, and this time he has brought along our very own 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Will the CT5-V Blackwing have enough horsepower to take down our powerful Shelby GT500? What are the Shelby GT500 and CT5-V's 0-60 times and top speed? What is a U-Drag race?
A U-Drag race consists of both cars heading down the track like a standard drag race, then braking hard, flipping around and then heading back.

I'd take the Ford, sell it, and buy an auto version of the CT5-V.
gt500 base or cftp you could offer me a super car like a huracan or tributo and gt500 gets around track in the same time or faster and you cant get a gt500 buy a whipple supercharger or turbos built motor and trans and have a 8 sec gt500 plus buy a truck and trailer to take it to track then buy s second gt500 but cftp toss a e85 tune on it smaller pulley exhaust and use it as my weekend roadcourse car and daily driver. you could get all of that for the money of 1 Ferrari f8 tributo or huracan evo. plus could a supercharger exhaust and tune for your v8 f150 tow rig and you can jave a 3rd vehicle to run 9s
I want them both, please. The Mustang for weekend joy rides. The Cadillac for daily driving.

@@ajyoussef2927 I despise manuals. I really don't understand the affinity some people have for them. They are slow and clunky. Literally every other type of transmission is more efficient.

Honestly, this is an ideal test medium for cars. As a car enthusiast, I'm so glad we are FINALLY moving beyond the 0-60 and quarter mile times.
The average owner is NEVER gonna do a quarter mile race so 0-60 times is all that really matter unless your gonna track your car. The blackwing still has MORE torque.
Mustang would've GOTTEN smoked if the caddy wasn't a manual and they actually properly activated the V performance instead of racing in tour mode. haha
BTW Now if we can just get the Average American to disconnect their cable services and turn off social media for a couple months everyone will stop being brainwashed with politics. LOL. I've had no TV for 5 years now and it feels so amazing. BTW who's brandon? 🤷♂🤣

Cars are about personal preference. Barely anybody does quarter mile , races on street or takes their car to the track .
Lets not get carried away those are still the staples but for sure this is fun too. But the turn can be easily botched by the driver even if they swap. This was cool.

That Mustang is brutal fast, but you guys really need to get your hands on the 10spd CT5 Blackwing to make it a bit more fair for the CT5BW.
It’s a four door vs a two door it won’t be fair plus the stand has more power
@@joshuamorris9050 the fact that it has 4 doors is irrelevant, the weight difference is within 100 lbs. The GM 10-speed would have helped considerably, since the ZL1 10-speed keeps up with the GT500 through the 1/4 mile despite the 110 horsepower deficit. Would it win here? Probably not, but it would've been a hell of a race.

@@MrGreenelight to each his own. I am indeed agreeing with you that it wasn't a fair fight at all. And yes the zl 1 would be more difficult, but in the end it would get its ass fcked by gt500. Randy Pobst said that the only reason a zl 1 (with track package) is slightly faster around a narrow track than a GT 500 is bc of its tires.

Love the Shelby GT500
You have to admit though, for a 4 door car with 100hp less, narrower tires, and a manual, the Cadillac actually held up pretty well

1.11G for the base GT500, and it's not even the best handling GT500. That Predator is just a beast of an engine.

It's not strange at all. Everyone knows that Ford decided to protect the expensive DCT from too much off the line abuse since the car is more track oriented than strip.

I really like this format, it better illustrates real world driving than a slalom or skidpad but keeps the raw power element in the drag.
I’m a lifelong Vette enthusiast and had a C8 but went to a Caddy for the first time because of the manual. The DCT is so fast, and I realize all the benefits, but there is nothing like shifting gears on your own.
They will never build a car like this again.
The Cadillac is for those who want a Corvette but have a family. It's a badass sedan

I think the BW wins with the auto in the quarter but still loses the whole race. But the gt500 also has better tires and 100hp. They are very close in weight

To be honest there’s a few guys who have swapped the 10 speed automatic into the GT 500 and it was faster than the stock seven speed dual clutch. You might be right

But it would be slower than the dct around the track tho. DCT is better around the track.

I would love to see that GT 500 vs C7Z06…… I would think those 2 would be the ones to beat… Hellcats obviously have the power to run with those 2, but they don’t turn so well…. and of course the C8 Z down the road …. The C7 Corvette Z06 would obliterate the mustang on this. It's one of the best handling cars in terms of pure mechanical grip that isn't aero influenced by track aero, so the low speed corner and braking section, along with the first straight would be in the Corvette's favor all day long

Its crazy that the two door Mustang is heavier than the CT5 V BW. Love this comparison. Was it stated somewhere what tires are on each vehicle?
I believe there both stock tires so i guess whatever the manufacturer lists for stock.
The Cadillac: Front: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S with P275/35R19, rear: P305/30R19 sizes
The GT500: Michelin Pilot 4S with Front: P305/30R20, rear: P315/30R20 sizes.
Second tire option is Michelin Pilot Cup 2 compound
Well the one guy says that the Mustang has Cup 2's but I'm not sure. The CFTP comes with Cup 2's but not standard Shelby does not. Not sure if he made a mistake or if someone pit the Cup tires on after the originals.
That Blackwing has to be cool to see in person. Even as an enthusiast who’s into cars and track days, I’ve yet to see one in person. I bet people don’t expect a four door sedan to be that fast.

Being a manual and about 100 hp down the Caddy did very well 🤙🏾
No real surprise here. Both cars weigh basically the exact same so coming off the line the blackwing having more torque helps it intially. But then you factor in the shelby having about 100 more hp and a DCT with better tires you get that outcome

Having more in Cadillac doesn't necessarily make it quicker off the line, the DCT factory parameters limit the power at lunch. DCT transmissions parameters limit at launch at times not always. Torque converters do have 60ft off the line because they don't parameter like DCT transmissions do. If the DCT is launched right, it will win every time. Remember, most people don't know how to launch a Shelby GT500.

Kind of a foregone conclusion for this type of test. The Mustang weighs the same but has 100 more horsepower and has a dual clutch auto transmission instead of a manual.
Yes, but the Shelby has a breif lag off the line so it makes it interesting.

Yes...but it takes some practice. I think he opted for the safest mode without over roasting off the line. I do believe that not all asphalt is equal, and some you'll find better traction on than others along with varying temperatures factored in. I too wanted him not to use launch control.

Not too sure of the power to weight difference..but I'm a family man and I wouldn't give up the space and comfort for that much difference in performance. Considering the gt 500 is pretty much the peak of American performance. Great video 👍

They are two totally different animals. A 4 door high performance family car versus Shelby Mustang? I was surprised the Cadillac did as good as it did.
I just moved to this really remote town Oregon and they have old drag strip that hasn't been used in a lot of years I think this U drag thing would be the ticket.
The asphalt on it is shot, but I've talked to some of these aggregate places around here and see if maybe we can get some donations and get the strip back running again. We need something like that around here.
I kind of expected the Cadillac to be a lot more competitive. Maybe even beat the Mustang. Just goes to show how much brute power that Mustang has.
The Cadillac is a *manual.* The automatic might embarrass that GT500, depending on the driver for that turn.

The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing already beat the new BMW M5 CS on the race track, so I'd want to see this instead. I'd thing rhe M5 CS would beat it on the first half and the Cadillac would reel it in on the cornering and roll race section
A stock m4 is on par with a Mustang GT. Won't come anywhere close to the gt500

It’s a no brainer that the GT500 was going to win this battle. Faster, handles better, and automatic, but it’s interesting to see which person is the better driver, and the guy who had better lateral g’s both times in both cars is just the better driver overall.
Not an automatic, a dual clutch, which is similar but shifts a lot faster than both a conventional automatic and a manual

There's a difference between a DCT and traditional torque converter automatic transmission tho.

Yea pretty unfair race honestly I feel like the 10 speed CT5-V would've got the GT500 in the straight. Automatic vs manual isnt exactly fair (and yes it is an automatic idgaf if its dct or torque converter if it shifts for you its an automatic)
I mean, one is a dedicated sports car, the other is a four door family sedan. The fact that the Caddy did as well as it did against the GT500 is admirable.

I wish y’all would try launching the Shelby without launch control. Practice with it and just brake boost it off the line without relying on the electronics which has the guaranteed delay.

Auto BW and 100hp to match, it's a different story. Both awesome cars! Problem here, there's a whole lot of monster mark up on that gt500, dealer and consumer, along with Ford encouraging it.

Was not expecting Shelby to stomp Cadillac like that. I thought Cadillac would get off the line better and hold the lead longer or at least have the race be closer
Once the Shelby hooks it goes ballistic in short order.
Shelby has r-compounds and an automatic vs. Blackwing with summer tires and a manual. This is about what I would expect. Use the same trans and tires and it would be closer (but I'd think the Shelby still might have an edge?)

True. Don't forget that Ford racing spent a lot of time working with suspension and handling for the GT500. This car came with the goods. It's matched a GT3 RS and beat a Hurican on a lightning lap.

@@rdollie1 Shelby would still win. It has so much horsepower. Maybe have this Shelby go up against something that is AWD making about 660 horses
@@rdollie1 they aren't R compounds...the base car (which is what the tester was) comes with Pilot Sport 4s tires, not the Sport Cup 2's. He was wrong in the video if the car is stock and the rubber wasn't changed.

The model 3 runs an 11.5 quarter mile. Other than getting out in front in the 0-60 the Shelby is faster in every way and better handling

they weigh the same and somehow gt500 gets around tracks in the same times as the Ferrari F8 Tributo Lamborghini Huracan EVO and Porsche gt3rs

Depends on the track, if its a tight track then it would struggle to hang with those supercars but Ford nailed it! S550 Mustang is a freakin success.

The GT500 does have a better gearbox than the kinda sluggish 8 speed automatic transmission is the C7 ZR1. The 8 speed is holding the ZR1 back on nurburgring and many other tracks sadly.
Although I'm not really a Ford fanboy, that Mustang is something else! If I had the money, that would be the American muscle car I would buy.

Love the shelby but I would take the black wing with no regrets. Throw another 100hp under the caddy’s hood and you have a whole different outcome. Nothing beats the feel of rowing your own gears for us old gear heads. Love this new race format also. Keep the vids coming guys.

Please run cars with same transmission AND tires. An R-compound and automatic beating a car on a summer tire with a manual doesn't tell me as much as I'd like.

These remind me of the Reno STOL drags , where bush planes have to take off, land , u turn taxiing on the ground then take off again and get to finish
