      I found it remarkable that those early entrepreneurs have tried the online subscription model of games, and music way back then... course the technology just wasn't good enough to run smoothly.

    Growing up in the 80's, I have nothing but the fondest memories of Qlink. They were the first to feature email and instant messages. They had weekly events in their "auditorium" which at times contained hundreds of other users. I remember the beloved emcee "RJScott". I was addicted to playing Name that Tune and won many "Q-pons" (redeemable for game time) from it. In the early 90's as the Commodore 64 fell out of use, the population of Q-Link dwindled and I left around 1993. The service ended permanently in 1994. But I have nothing but the warmest memories of all those lonely nights as a confused teen being kept company by all those wonderful people on Q-Link.

  • @CommodoreFan64
    @CommodoreFan64 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Awesome video, and even as a kid in late 87 I was a user of Q-Link on my C128 as it came on the back of the GEOS software, and it was AWESOME!!! with a Commodore 1670 modem(1200 baud). I was lucky because the South Carolina # for GEOS for me at the time was a local call(you found the #'s in the book that came with the software), so no long distance fees ever showed on my parents bill lol!, and the expense of per hour was total worth it for the interaction I got from other people at the time, and being able to show it off to my friends. Also I to note the Q-Link was online till mid 1994 if I remember correctly, but I used it up till around early 92 once users started dropping off big time, and I was moving onto a DOS/Win 3.11 PC. Good times indeed. :-)

    It's funny, because one of the techs working on those first Apple computers had a system all worked out to let the computers communicate with one another over long distances. Jobs made him remove it because he wanted to keep things simple almost to a fault. It's the same reason they had those one-button mice among other things.

    • @DestroyaDoll
      @DestroyaDoll 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      M. Wells Jobs made some astoundingly short sighted decisions, especially in the early days. He is why Lisa, and it's counterparts, could never match the Apple II series controlled primarily by Woz's imput.

    Very cool. I am a former QLink user myself and it was interesting to learn about how it came to be. There was actually an attempt a few years back to reverse engineer the QLink protocols in an attempt to resurrect that service from a nostalgic perspective, but it likely got shot down hard by AOL.

      It sounds pretty crazy, but the GameLine wasn't even the first device to let you do this. A similar service for the Intellivision called PlayCable came onto the market a couple of years before the GameLine. The problem was that neither really worked very well, hence why DLC for game consoles didn't really become a thing until 25 or so years later.

    First ISP was AOL, was not informed that by setting up my contact number as a 913 number, it would be considered long distance from Kansas City, (I live in a 913, but back then AOL considered that Topeka), so my 1st phone bills had long distance charges on them, later changed the contact to 816 (Kansas City, MO), which dropped the long distance. I liked AOL at 1st, but later found it limiting & they were always trying to sell you something when you logged in.

    I remember getting all of these online service trials when you'd buy a new modem - for every birthday or holiday I'd get the latest modem starting with a 110 baud VIC Modem all the way through my late teens when I got a 9600 baud Hayes modem!
    Cool - at 4:00 there was a picture of an ADM 3+ - I used to buy those at blind auction from my University - fix/repair them and add a 1200 baud modem and "rent" them to other students for pizza/beer money. Great terminals - they weren't 100% VT100 compatible but they worked well enough to dial in to campus machines (VAX or AT&T Unix) to do lab work for your classes. Awesome.

    Heh, I remember getting a 1200 baud modem for my C64 and it came with the Quantum Link software (this was back in late 1993 or early 94). I tried it out and got the message that it was now owned by AOL. Eventually (since I still didn't have an IBM-type yet), I was able to connect to the local Greater Columbus Freenet (someone should really do an article on the various freenets from back in the day) using Telix 3.2.1 installed on a 5 1/4" floppy.
    That enabled me to surf the (non GUI) internet, get Usenet, receive e-mail and do WAIS searches for an hour at a time, or two hours over a 24-hr period. All on an aging Commodore 64 and a 1200 baud modem. I still have some printouts from 1995 using GCFN and a dot-matrix printer :)

    When you started to mention Email, I got excited. Aaron Fechter, a robotics inventor, developed a way to send mail over the telephone lines in 1985. He never figured out how to market his stuff, so it never really got out there.. he called it "The Ant-Gravity Freedom Machine".. I believe he is still active with his robots(which used to play at ShowBiz Pizza) and the company "Creative Engineering"..you should check them out, really interesting stuff. :-)

    Before the internet I used to go on a BBS' called Ned's Opus. You could download cracked games, images, and even really basic GIFs (which blew our minds). I remember a GIF of the TNG enterprise shooting in a loop and it was amazing.

    Q-Link is really damn impressive and I never even heard of it before. I never used a C64 before either and only in the past several years started actually seeing more Commodore 64 games in action because of Psychedelic Eyeball. What a great computer that was even if it was starting to show its age seemingly when IBMs started to come around. I'll definitely be interested in your AOL video since I lived through that and used it.

    I remember using Q-Link back in the 80's! My social life - which sucked in High School - flourished as I met more introverted people who didn't fit in with the Jocks, Gearheads, or the Preps. We formed alliances and planned to dominate the world in the future! ;-)

    My first exposure to Q-Link was a supplement to a copy of GEOS. Eventually I became a regular in Bonnie's Bar and RabbitJack's Casino.

    We had CompuServe in Switzerland in the late 90s iirc. They also shipped their custom browser with built-in mail client (similar to the Netscape suite).

      I was hoping so too, but the video would've been like 45 minutes long then. Too much for me to take on at one time with the schedule that I have.

    Man, Qlink was my jam. Nothing like setting your phone handset on that little 300baud modem cradle.

    we had q-link for our c64! 4 free hours/month; nearest dial-up server 35 miles and a long distance call away. we'd log in 1 saturday night each month; everything took quite a while to download, even with our speedy-for-the-time 2400bps modem, but mostly because we'd keep losing the connection and having to start over. ran up our phone bills a lot, but we downloaded a lot of useful/fun games, and hung out on its forums some, too.
