    Update: Mad Catz is back from the dead! Well, they're back in the sense that the brand was acquired by a manufacturing firm in China that used to build certain Mad Catz devices. They've also been restructured under new management than the old Mad Catz completely and that is probably for the best. Doesn't seem like they're doing fight sticks anymore either, at least not yet.

    i feel like every kid had the experience of being in the game store with your mom to buy a new controller, and you want the OEM one, but your mom sees the mad catz and says you have to get it instead because its cheaper. no kid ever intentionally bought these things, we just endured them.

      @JoelRiter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      Well, you also have to remember that back in the late 80s going into the 90s, many of us gamers were kids. We had no money of our own. Even if your parents were awesome enough to not get you engaged in the console wars (I was lucky to have a SNES Genesis and PC, I was actually kinda poor... But how that came about was another story), the reality is, the OEM peripherals could still be expensive. So, parents would end up getting the cheaper 3rd party açcessories. Mainly because of the expense and not knowing better.
      Come the 6th gen or so, many of us had our own jobs at last. So many of us would just buy OEM, since we knew better. Mad Catz had to go niche because of this. Hell, I have a 4 year old now who is starting to play vidya. You think I want to use a 3rd party controller for her, my wife, or myself?
      It literally came down to a huge change in who was actually purchasing the products.

      @LGR  7 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      Thanks! It is precisely because of those lists that I wanted to make this episode. Nothing wrong with a vapid list every so often of course, but there are more fascinating aspects to their story than just "lulz the player 2 controller."

    • @Thoringer
      @Thoringer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Couldn't have said it better! It is also the best vid I've seen on this channel so far. Earned my "Sub" now. One thing not mentioned is that they were far behind in creating the Star Citizen controllers - that just vanished into thin air and even Cloud Imperium Games allegedly never heard from Saitek (then still under Mad Catz) how they are coming along. CIG still hopes that Logitech follows through with the production.

    Only thing I ever used Mad Catz controllers for was the turbo function (if they had it) during a couple of game events that required a lot of button mashing.
    The turbo function repeated hitting the last button you pressed along with the turbo button until you cancelled it. It was useful during mini-events or certain Mario Party games.

It form fits most any hand size and shape, and my... GOD... the pinky rest. You have not lived until you've used their R.A.T. pinky rest. My original finally needed to be replaced about three months ago (really, just the side buttons were starting to go, a staple of many game macros of mine), and of course I sprung for another R.A.T. 7. It was a bit rough to track one down due to the bankruptcy, but it was well worth it. Here's to another seven years of service with a fantastic mouse from a legendary, sometimes dubiously so, company.

One Christmas I got a stereo system that came in a decent-sized box, so I cut a flap in the front to sit the pedals in, and taped the wheel to the top. Made the same mistake here. Bought a RAT9 Because of the futuristic style and the "Great Wireless technologies" that it had. The mouse pointer started flicking all over the damn screen for no apparent reason and the batteries died one year after i bought it, just out of the warranty period. There was nothing in the sensor nor was there anything wrong with the computer. 110 dollars down the drain.

    The only good thing about Madcatz were those fight sticks. They were considered one of the best sticks in the market.
    Now Razer has taken its place in the stick market, it isn't as one-sided as Mad Catz domination in the FGC.

    I have to say the Mad Catz R.A.T. 6 mouse is by far the best quality mouse I've ever owned, and the only one to last longer than about a year and a half. When I was younger, however, they were synonymous with subpar quality lol.

    I remember when I was 11/12 having a mad catz controller with fans to keep the palms cool, and I still have a gun they sold for xbox that I bought for house of the dead 3, and I thought it was so cool, you would put the memory card where the clip would go. I also have and still use a wireless controller they sold. Loved mad catz stuff felt a little cheap at times but it did look cool!

    I just took apart a grimy Mad Catz GameCube controller and yeah it is hella cheap inside. I did pick up one of their genesis controllers with the turbo sliders recently. Looks like it was never used. I remember having a clear blue PS controller of theirs. It used to shock me occasionally but it was not designed to do that like that one with the pads.

    I used the Rock Band guitar as a midi controler to record some sweet lute rifs in my music. I'd say that Mad Catz Rock Band guitar controller is one of the most useful midi controllers out there. It maybe wasn't intended for that use but I think it's a simple but quality product.

    For christmas 2016, my partner of the time bought me a Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E 7 keyboard (I'd picked it out, and covered the shipping & import duties from the US) - initially it was quite good (despite the latest drivers available at the time not being signed for Windows 10 x64), and I certainly liked the programability of it's touchscreen LCD, but after a while it tended to get rather unstable rather quickly (firmware crashes, particularly when playing certain games - most of which didn't even use any MC APIs, go figure)...
    Moved it to my work Win7 PC, where it lasted another year and a spit before getting unstable there too - been boxed for the last couple of months
