    The winners all had wonderful pieces, but I also liked one at 32:16, and 32:42 second from right. It has a wonderful likeness and firey limited background that appeals to me. Didn't see it getting any attention, so to the girl who created that, well done! She also talked about using her mirror at 24:06. As a hobby portrait artist myself, I like her use of the mirror. I use a similar idea by using my phone to photograph my pieces when I think they're done, and that helps me see with new eyes where my mistakes are.

    Judges should have two categories: actual likeness, and then technique, because many do not look like the person at all, I mean am I crazy? Some looked like the person had aged ten, twenty years, and eaten ten thousand donuts, and the judges were like, "Wow, this one moves me!"
    Edit: At least they got the winner right. That was a marvelous painting.

    • @paulwalters5943
      @paulwalters5943 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a problem brewing in the traditional, realist art categories like portrait painting. The culture of postmodernism and “any truth” has so seeped into every facet of life that a portrait which looks nothing like a subject can “move” a judge so that they grade it higher than one that does.
      This is what is going on here. A judge likes the flare or style of a work more than the accuracy. A totally valid opinion but one I do feel is a bit odd at a life portrait competition.

    • @samaraisnt
      @samaraisnt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They weren't judging for likeness though. Look at the most famous portraits painted in all of history, most don't show a strong likeness.

    • @samaraisnt
      @samaraisnt ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also they were posing as models, not as figures/themselves. Likeness is important with presidential portraits but even then...look at JFK's post humous portrait, it has no face. It's all expressionist/emotion. Also THEY HAD 4 HOURS, that's not a normal session time for a proper portrait...

    • @californiaplant-basedeater2761
      @californiaplant-basedeater2761 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@samaraisnt If the models aren't there for their likeness to be captured, why are they there at all, then?

    • @stephenx2857
      @stephenx2857 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if you want to copy the person take a photo. art isn't always about likeness. is a celebrity, or even a regular person their likeness? no... it's about what they convey, their posture, their attitude, their expression. none of those things really require exact replication of their likeness to convey. but they're critical to truly capturing something of a likeness. Even the winner, that image is very expressive. blobs of color.... it's trying to capture the shape/expression, and that's why it was powerful. it really wasn't about exact likeness

    Peopel underestimate how much harder is to paint a young good looking girl than an older man. The lack of "accidents" in the face make very hard to control the focus and depth. The best way to paint her woudl be to imagine a HUGE change in lighting, increasing drastically the contrast, but that is something too hard to do in a few hours if you are obviously not a great master.

    • @bigscheesy4982
      @bigscheesy4982 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The secret is control of edges and mindfulness of areas of high contrast. A youthful person will usually hav more taught skin so you don't want hard edges of a significantly darker value on a lit area of the face. Deliberation around where to let detail sink into softness and simplicity, and where to accentuate a crevice is tricky but very satisfying to learn.

    The winner was undoubtably the best one there, but I get why people thought the painting was boring, as sometimes the best paintings are a bit simple and boring, even though they take exceptional talent to create. Would have preferred to see the artist that painted Michael Kerr (blue t shirt, blonde hair in a bun using a mirror. Don't think they mentioned her name) in the final than Amanda, even though her painting was a bit too flattering, Amanda's went the other way, and was completely unflattering, but I preferred the style of the other one. Obvs that Alan, the art teacher, thought he was going to win and was pretty miffed when he didn't. He was like, well yeah the winners painting was good. "Good" lol!

If they go down this route it's gonna ruin the show. Prefer they show and focus on all the artist and leave the judging to suprise.
