    Many creatures wear disguises in order to keep safe from predators, but there are some that dress to kill. Orchid mantises are one of nature’s most awesome examples of aggressive mimicry. These killer insects are almost indistinguishable from orchids! Scientists recently learned that their disguise doesn’t work quite how we thought it did.
    Special thanks to TH-camr Fruchtpudding for letting us use their awesome orchid mantis hunting footage! / fruchtpudding

    They made a pokémon based off this in the latest generation.
    It's called Lurantis, and it's actually a flower that disguises itself as a mantis, rather than the other way around. Its pre-evolved form is called Fomantis, meaning "faux mantis". Which is why it's classified as a Grass type, and not a Bug type.
    It's also fabulous.

    There's also an orchid that looks like a female bee to attract male bees so they can be pollinated...so...full circle I guess?

Can i just point out that whatever the subject may be, the It's Okay To Be Smart-team somehow always finds a way to make their videos interesting and ejoyable, both relating to the content as well as visually. Also the length of these videos is perfect. Not too long that it becomes boring but also not too short that you get the sense that you're missing information.

    I’m deathly afraid of insects, but I’m just absolutely in love with the praying mantis. They’re so beautiful. To me, they’re more like lizards than insects for some reason, so I’m not afraid of them. I see why some people would keep them as pets. What wonderful creatures.

    I had a huge orchid mantis named Ella (after Ella Fitzgerald) she and I were homies for about 2 years until she passed away of old age. I really miss her. She was given a miniature Jewish funeral. She had a tiny coffin with a tiny shovel so each of us could cover her coffin. I even read from a tiny copy of the Talmoud. I actually sat shiva when she died.

    Animal Crossing is such a good game at being educational. It taught me about orchid mantises and mole crickets(you can see them on Brave Wilderness) before I saw them on youtube as COOL CREATURES YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF lol and I'm just here on my ds like 'oh yeah that annoying bug that's hard to find' :] love the video, I learned a lot more!

      No, orchid mantis isn't native to the US, and like most non-native insects, they are regulated by the government. You would need a special permit from the USDA. I'm willing to bet they don't had those out to people who just think they are pretty and want one.

    yeah but how did they evolve to do that??

    • @Jordan_Dossou
      @Jordan_Dossou 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      stiqula well you know how some people are randomly born with skin conditions or multiple toes, or differenr color eyes, or a better intellectual ability? The same thing happens to the animal kingdom, but the mutations that best help them survive and mate are the ones that live to the next generation, creating an abundance of that particular gene in the animal kingdom.
      Im sure somewhere along in history a brown apple existed, however any pollinators were not attracted to the flowers of that brown apple so it didnt survive. Whenever a red apple came, pollinators spread it out more and it became the universal apple color.

      I'm not asking what evolution is, I'm asking how one species evolves to mimic another without making a conscious decision to do so.

      He just answered you!

    • @walkingmonument
      @walkingmonument 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Juicy Frog no, he didn't. He explained evolution as it's commonly understood. Any reasonable person sees this as an act of creation because blind forces can't possibly produce such an effect. We've had praying mantids on this Earth for over 85 million years with little to no change. We have fossils and amber encased mantids that prove that they've not evolved in any appreciable way in all that time. Mantids are incredibly successful no matter what they look like or what shape they are and we have proof of that world wide. There really is no evolutionary necessity for this adaptation. But of course you'll argue that evolution doesn't have needs. It just is. But why do we have fossils showing little to no change in over 85 million years? The same period where extensive evolutionary changes were supposedly happening. We have countless examples of creatures that were exactly the same millions of years ago as they are today. Why did evolution stop working for all these examples? And where are the examples proving evolution? The missing links? Before a bird there was a reptile. Where's the half reptile/bird fossils? Before it had feathers it had to have something between a reptilian scale and a feather. Where's that fossil?

    • @walkingmonument
      @walkingmonument 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My face is the antidote so it's already been proven that mutations don't transfer over very well. Meaning that the DNA code wants to revert back to what it was originally before the mutation affected the host. A good example of that is little people getting married and having standard sized children. Or deaf couples that were born deaf having hearing children. And so on. The gene is coming from both sides yet the dominant gene of the species, not the parents, prevails. There are other factors. Like how the female of the sex of many species are particularly picky about who they choose for a mate while others are repeatedly rejected. Mutants in general are rejected as potential mates. There's a study done on fruitflies that show that mutants are repeatedly passed over in favor of the truer examples of a species. We see it in humans too. We're typically attracted to people that have classic or accepted human features and will initially reject those with deformities.
