The control tower at Burtonwood was a tall, thin tower with the control room at the top, and Fred Dibnah was engaged to demolish it using the same method he used to demolish chimneys (i.e. weakening the structure at the base, propping it up with bits of wood, and setting fire to them). A number of dignitaries including local politicians and former commanders from the base came in all their finest clothes and best uniforms to watch the tower fall. What nobody knew was that whilst the tower had been derelict, a flock of birds had started nesting in it. The smoke, and the initial movement of the tower, caused the birds to take off over the dignitaries, and do what birds often do just after taking off....

New station looks nice, but there’s no replacing that gorgeous old station design at Sankey.

  • @ShedTV

I grew up in Great Sankey and I often used to get the train to Liverpool and Manchester from Sankey Station. Back then there was a lot more parking in the lane and the old railway yard, but this is now packed with houses. It's a shame to see the station looking so derelict, it was quite smart in the '80s and had a manned ticket office and cosy waiting room.

Excellent stuff Geoff. I’ve lived in Great Sankey for 13 years, and it was great to see you at the station that is so close to our home. Sometimes the wife forgets about the new station and goes to Sankey for Penketh by mistake. It boggled my mind when they built it, I’d grown up around railways in north Liverpool/Sefton and never known of a ‘new station’. Just thought I’d add it is/we are actually west of Warrington town centre.

Hurrah! This is my (original) neck of the woods... I'm from a village a few miles the other side of Warrington but been in Coventry since 1980. Anyway I visited Warrington West not long after it opened and decided to walk from the bus station (Warrington Interchange) and then get the train back to Central. Started off nice, then the dark clouds assembled... then a tremendous downpour which lasted for a good fifteen minutes and it was *cold*! However it didn't dampen my experience of the station and I found a nearby pub for a coffee, so was soon revived. Therefore full marks for the station and nice to see some new rail development in the North West. I didn't realise that Sankey for Penketh was still open for a limited service so thanks for that and a cool video always, Geoff!

@@isaactimmins8959 Yes... and it's pretty good! It includes an underpass directly under the Warwick Road (to which it is adjacent) leading to new bus stands for services into the city centre. Car parking is above with ample spaces. What's interesting (and previously unexpected) is that the old station building, which is listed, remains in operation so we have two distinct entrances/exits, spreading the load depending on your route to or from the station.

Wow. How bizarre. I was there today.
Went to Centre Parcs in Whinfell Forest for my Daughter's 21st and with her bringing a friend, it meant I had to lug it from Liverpool and back on the train.
Penrith, Preston, Warrington Quay, Warrington Central, Liverpool Lime Street. Bootle New Strand.
I didn't read the travel itinerary properly and only realised before arriving that instead of changing platforms at Warrington Quay, that it was a 15min walk to Warrington Central. And due to a small delay, I had to do it in 7 minutes.

I'm sure you'll have done all your research but when you get to kintore, make sure to look out for the bench and platform signs from the original station. They were salvaged in the 60s, donated back then repainted. Also...if you head into the village you can find the old station hotel (now flats...opposite the co-op). There's also a wee residential road near the old hotel where you can just about see the original station platform.

Interesting thought about this stations location.
In the 1980s, fresh out of uni I spent a few weeks at a CND anti nuclear protest camp at Burtonwood. I'm almost certain this station is at least in part built on the site of that protest camp.
On the subject of the flooding mentioned above, I did wonder when I watched the video as my memory has the railway in a deepish cutting there, with the base on one side of the cutting and the site where the peace camp was on the other (with the USAF housing across the road) and I also have a vague memory of a small stream in the area (probably not quite right about the stream).

Oddly, you mention Wigan, which I had to travel via from Manchester to Warrington because the direct trains simply did not turn up.

  • @matthewbrew777
    @matthewbrew777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Warrington West is my now-local station, and it’s building has been very controversial. Sankey for Penketh was always a popular stop, with step free access. The only thing that limited it was it’s listed buildings, although no reasons were given for why Sankey Station couldn’t have simply been refurbished. Most importantly, the new Warrington West Station is a big blow for those of older age and/or those without a car who rely on trains more, as most of these people live in Sankey and Penketh.
Warrington West is a decent name for the station, as we have always called this area Warrington West anyway. I doubt it was called Chapelford Station due to Chapelford being associated with very high crime rates, snobbery, and people in Chapelford all having cars and not needing to use the station much.
Warrington West Station is by no means a bad station, and the odd extra services are appreciated, but with Sankey for Penketh still open, it seems ridiculous why that station couldn’t just be refurbished, which would be a cheaper solution and benefit a greater number of people.

Why is it that waiting rooms are not built at modern stations as waiting in the cold and wet is no fun if arriving very early to allow for possible traffic delays on the way to the station. I miss the blazing coal fire that my local station used to have in the waiting room in winter, even the gas fire in the down platform waiting room, often full of PO workers waiting for the mail bags. Later both changed to electric storage heaters. Could do with some sound deadening ceiling panels to cure that echo in the ticket hall.

Another great video, thank you Geoff and Karl. Could someone just explain the thing about the trains only stopping at Sankey OR Warrington West, and not both - I didn't quite understand what Geoff meant about 'not enough paths or space'. Thank you!

@@geofftech2 The 7:40 from Warrington Central stops at both Warrington West(7:43) and Sankey(7:45), and continues to  Liverpool Lime Street. Northern has scheduled it so that the train arrives at Widnes one minute later at (7:51).

The whole design of the station building was supposed to emulate an aircraft hangar as part of the local history link. At least thats what they said in the press release that was given out on opening day. It already looks quite 'weathered' since I was there for that.

I do wonder as the current fixed signaling block system is replaced with dynamic digital signaling blocks that trains could potentially stop at both 🤔

Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge are technically not new stations since both were reopened.
