  • It's Day Five of #SixStations as I go and visit the six newest stations in the country that I've not been to yet. In each video I've got a different guest with me each time, and today Jen joins me in Scotland for this new station on the Cumbernauld line between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Follow JenOnTheMove on TH-cam here : / jenonthemove
The six new stations in this series are:
Worcestershire Parkway. Bow Street, Warrington West, Horden, Robroyston and Kintore.

While I would be over the moon to even get a train station in the first place (living in a place in the US that is woefully inadequate when it comes to public transportation), I have to wholeheartedly agree with Jen. I think this is a theme of nearly all building these days. Build them as quickly and cheaply as possible, and make them ~clean & modern~ which of course means, devoid of all character. I love seeing all the different stations you visit and the areas they're in as its as close to traveling as I can get right now, but my favorites are definitely the older stations with the Victorian details, flowers and all that.

  • @frglee

I'd look forward to welcoming you to Thornhill (Dumfriesshire) as the newest rail station in Scotland if it ever opens, which would break one of the longest stationless gaps in the Scottish rail network. But it'll probably be sometime in the 22nd century the rate things are going.

Great video, Geoff and Jen! Robroyston is just up the road from me and it's never going to be the most memorable of stations. It's quite handy for seeing occasional freight trains or railtours going past and it has decent accessibility (as you would expect from a modern station). Other than that though, it's a bit non-descript and often just as windy as it was when you visited

Absolutely. The same boring grey steel box buildings, grey fences, grey shelters, grey bridges. Nothing to differentiate between all the new cookie-cutter stations apart from the signage. Some flower beds, a bit of landscaping, maybe some work from a local artist, even just a lick of paint to cover up all the dull grey steel would make all the difference in the world. This was my line when I went from Cumbernauld to Glasgow for college and university, until I lost my monthly pass on the way to the station and wouldn't let me on the train. Got the buss after that.

I think we have missed a trick in this country by not trying the approach found in at some stations the Netherlands: a shop on the station platform which combines selling rail tickets with basic groceries, of the kind you find at petrol filling stations. They could incorporate a coffee bar, or at the very least a coffee machine, for thirsty passengers. It would make stations like Robroyston a lot more user friendly.

I live about a mile from Robroyston station and was amazed at your comment that there isn't a cafe nearby, as the Millerston Café on Station Road is only a few minutes walk from the station.
The road bridge over the railway isn't a public road, hence a car park on either side. There is also a local map on the station.
Unusually the station names aren't bi-lingual as ScotRail decided there isn't a Gaelic version of Robroyston, although I think Baile Raibeart Ruadh would be perfectly valid - more so than some of the concoctions they have come up with!
Royston is a separate area of Glasgow, in fact you could go along Royston Road to reach Robroyston.
Geoff was right to guess that locals might use the lifts to cross the railway - people living in Millerston do this having walked to Asda/Lidl etc. in the Robroyston shopping park.
The video was a bit disappointing, some local knowledge would have improved it.

This is a massive simplification, but Amps are pulled by the device rather than pushed into it. A regular outlet can supply up to 16 Amps as well. An EV charge point isn't too different from a regular outlet.

As most ScotRail trains have USB sockets it seems pointless to install them in station car parks. What are you supposed to do while your phone's charging - walk away leaving it for the Neds to steal?

There’s a costa at the retail park and one next door to queen street station.

The platform is made from the material used on oil rigs, well that was the press release.
Nearest shops about a 10min walk, asda and a McDonald's.

Robroyston is noticeably far from any amenities like shops and cafes. You have to walk into Millerston to find the nearest coffee. A roll van in the car park would do a roaring trade.

It's had a complete rebuild of the the station frontage due to the platforms needing lengthened to accommodate 8 car trains but it has retaind the original victorian glass train shed roof.

They spent a couple of years doing it up, it's very swish now - open, accessible, much easier to get to the low level trains too. All good.
