Boom! Maybe the best video so far, great job! :) Self awareness for sports is a bit like they key to the garage if you need to fix your car, without it, you just can't enter the space where fixing things is easy. One coaching quote that doesn't leave my mind is: "It doesn't matter how many times you have told the player the same thing, until they have understood it, you haven't done your job." Both coaching and learning is so much more fun when the coach uses all the tricks in the bag for getting the athlete to understand, and even better when the athlete also uses all the tricks to be able to understand. The beach volleyball world (and probably sports in general) needs more stuff like this! :)
@@themckibbinbrothers Absolutely! What a dream world it would be to coach in, where all players would be curious about how to actually learn more efficiently, and you guys just made a huge move towards shaping the beach volleyball world into that place! 😉😎 Ohh yeah also - how much more fun isn't it to talk with people who are constantly in "curiousity, exploration and creativity"-mode, those conversations quickly become just as magical as the practices that lead to insights! :)
On the topic of conforming for success, my dad would always say it doesn’t matter what your golf swing looks like as long as the ball ends up where you want it to. I feel like that applies just the same to volleyball. Also, some of the hardest people to play against are the ones who don’t play like everyone else does. Great video.

Gotta love the "Aha!!" moments! 😁 8 years as a ski instructor, I've evolved a mindset like this and it's made a huge difference! Gotta love the journey, it's better then the end goal itself most times 👊 Keep the fire up guys 🔥🔥🔥
Great video! I love how you and Casey have started to talk about the mental side of the game over the past few videos. One of the hardest parts about transitioning to volleyball from another sport (soccer) was the fact that in volleyball, all your mistakes are quantified in the other team getting a point. I had a really hard time learning how to learn from errors, yet not let them loom over me. Because of this, I think volleyball mentality is just as important to your game as any other fundamental. Your past points: not trying to set too perfect, approaching the ball calmly, and now learning to get creative all touch on this point as well.
If I play Beach Volleyball, I say this to my teammate, even if it its not a perfect pass, but get the ball alive quick and high even the set and I don’t need a perfect set or pass just do your job.
Superb video, my mindset have been always something like that in every task. Even for college. But I know a lot of people who are struggling with there mindset. They always call me an optimism. After changing my mind I got much better and furthermore pleased in volleyball or other hobbys of mine (guitar...) I hope many people are going to see this video and understand the importance of the right mindset.
Increadible video. I am so happy to realise that as a coach I am implementing those ideas and I am on the right track. Thank you for the great job guys on doing what you do. It helps me a lot in my “young” coaching career
So true. I discovered this myself quite a while ago. One thing that can be added is that when practicing, make sure to "feel" and be aware of what your body is doing. As in, "feel" your muscles. I could probably have described this to make it sound less weird, but that is the essence of it.
I don't know if you are going read this, but damn... you just put into words what all this time has been flying inside my mind, there's nothing to be afraid, there's no need to rush, there's nothing wrong with doing mistakes, all that matters is you, your commitment, your joy and why you want to get better at something, you don't need to compare yourself with the others, instead use them as examples to create your own progress, there's not 1 formula to "perfection", just people with their own formula. From now on I'll continue enjoying my trainings, being aware of my self and what I can improve, and just be patient (not conformist or lazy) and someday in the future I'll look back and say "wow I'd never have expected that all the things that I used to hate or blame where just a part of the great journey I've made", Thanks Riley, thanks Mckibbin brothers, a great hug to you all!
This is exactly how Adrian Carambula (aka Mr. Skyball) plays! His motto is "Be you to be good" which is all about finding your uniqueness and personal strengths in order to excel. I love the message! Thanks for all your videos, keep it up!
So ispirational and so well done! Thank you! I think this video should be named just "The art of improving", those advise are so helpful, not only in sports, but also in life in general :)
Great video. As a soccer guy who loves volleyball, one thing I liked to incorporate at my practices was letting the players play. Let them solve the problems that were created on the field. When I added this to training, my team improved immensely because the kids were being creative, coming up with solutions on their own and it carried over to the field. Keep these videos coming boys.
For coaches that are also creative putting both together is magical. Athletes sometimes think us coaches are like Harry Potter and we can wave a wand and magically make the athlete better using a certain drill or practice regimen. My greatest moments as a coach have sometimes happened one on one when I'm frustrated trying to teach a skill or develop a skill with an athlete and they just aren't getting it... I've done some crazy things sometimes out of frustration that ended up being the creative spark they needed to move forward. I think frustration is the catalyst for creativity and love your Eureka moment! Well done and enjoy the euphoria while it lasts. The cool thing for you is that each time in the future creativity will flow easier and if you think you are excited now...wait until the next time and the next time. It becomes almost hard to talk about it without sounding kind of crazy. Just seeing you so excited made this video a must see in my opinion.
Thanks for the lesson coach! Really inspiring, made me want to try out this mindset and things differently on and off the court. I really do love this channel, keep it up! Much love from Sweden :)
This video is so amazing and so true. It’s something that I encourage my players to do while in practice or games (be creative and don’t be afraid to make mistakes). Awesome video
Wonderfully put. Experiencing epiphanies in myself is a very exciting feeling. Listening to advice and then applying that advice is never easy, but it feels sooo good when the pieces click into place.
I talk about awareness with my team all the time and personally, I crave to understand the why. I am going reapply this message to my 13U team and have them watch this at practice. Love this channel and thank you for pushing the limits!
I was really waiting for him to try and sell something at the end .. trying to anticipate what kind of BS product/etc might they be selling. When the video ended without a sales pitch at the end, I had to double check to if the video played all the way thru 😂 they’re really just great people making great videos for the sake of making a great video. That’s relatively a rare occurrence on this platform.
So inspirational! At the moment my partner and I are trying to improve our game and that video will help us for sure as we are working on our mental game also😊 Big like from Slovenia 😊
I’m pumped I came across this, it’s what I need for volleyball, piano any sport or hobby really. Great info, would love some more expansion and thoughts on this! I will be sharing this with others
I love what this teaches about sports, but I really LOVE what this teaches about life! I'm actually going to share this with my team of coaches. Total mind shift happened for me watching this video. Thanks for sharing!
I love this. I’m always looking to fine-tune and improve (in sports and life). And what I’ve realized is nothing can be fine-tuned until it is first consistent. In business, I always thought I followed a “process,” but when asked to define what that process was, it was nearly impossible for me to do so. So I’ve been working hard the past 2 years to try and define and improve my processes. We’ve used Pareto’s Principle as a guiding tenet, which is the idea that 20% of one’s efforts are responsible for 80% of the desired results. Self-awareness and creativity have been critical to identify that 20% because it's different for everyone. My company has a couple of related mantras I’d like to share: First, challenge the dogma! I don’t want to confine our ability to solve issues by conforming to antiquated, preconceived notions; let’s try and think for ourselves. Second, if both of us agree on everything, one of us is unnecessary! Almost every single great idea we have is found at the end of a robust exchange of ideas and debate. Great video! I appreciate the insight.
Great advice and I totally agree. Been doing a lot of sports and have a bunch of hobbies over the years. And especially in later years starting to utilise this. After I found out I also tried to apply it to my students in a martial art. Trying to get them to think in forms of think about themselves as a whole and especially utilising all the stuff they already got in their tool box. In that way you get the to start thinking freely both in the way their bodies work and looking through their knowledge base to see if they have something in there that the can use or attach this new skill to. Most of the times we already know the body movement but get confused because it's in a different environment than we used to. And to all coaches. Please try to get your students as fast as possible to find the fun in analysing themselves to get to this state of learning. All o you will have more fun.
Awesome video! I like the overall message (especially the quote on my fave ted talk ever). One thing that helps a lot on improving thing is not trying to do everything perfect all the time. It hit me watching Steph Curry in an ad outtake where he was messing up a drill and just said "that's why we here for, to get better"
Could you please do a tutorial video on receiving serves at chest height and above? Your tutorials are amazing and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
Epic video...something I try and tell my athletes all the time but have never managed to put it quite so clearly...so I just sent them this ha ha....thanks for all the content. Brilliant stuff!
Thanks for this video ^^. Most of the time I use my creativity for a solution but never for sport. At sport I have self-awareness. So I'll definitely try this out!
I feel like this builds off the saying about giving a man a fish vs teaching him to fish. Coaches so often will focus on giving us solutions rather than helping us develop tools so that we can solve the problems ourselves!
First things first: Great video(s). There are so many reasons to lik'em: the vibe, the tips that actually translate or just the consistency with which you put up quality content. Though I've been following your channel for a quite a while, being forced to teach online myself is what turned me into a complete McKibbin brothers Stan. The way you present and explain stuff is really unique, not just among volleyball videos. I try to break down why it's better than other content and pick up some of it for my own teaching. Btw, I'd love to see some drill videos. This could even be a series of videos, e.g., volleyball specific drills on and and off the ball, body weight exercises. Like that Nike app (NTC). And how about a Hawaiian brothers battle. Also mixing the brothers up for all pairing could be fun. Ah, and please bring in Carambula!
Incredible message, I will for sure be sharing this with my intramural team. Also the hat cracked me up when I noticed. I think Maddison is learning from his mistake from the last video lol
I'll go to the next training with that mindset. Sometimes I feel like I'm not paying attention while I'm playing, so I commit lots of stupid mistakes and overthink when I'm about to attack. Maybe I should go back to your video about breathing. I should relax and be more mindful, I guess. Anyway, thank you very much for your videos, they're pure gold. :)
The messagge that you guys are sharing totally resonates with me. Even more since I’ve been training under the Ido Portal method. Please, have a look at it, since the ideas of self-discovery and creativity are also at the art of the culture this guy is promoting. Thanks for you video
Heart*, sorry for the bad English, but you got the messagge!glad to hear that it can be interesting for you, keep it up with this vibe on the channel and good luck on the court!
I love these videos so much more than the skill and drill videos. My own personal journey through sand volleyball has been great. Mid December 2018 I moved to AZ as a beginner (athletic but never played VB). I have now progressed to being able to hang in there at B level 4s tournaments and have been dabbling in 2s events to become a stronger player and shift from 4s to 2s. This sport is wonderful and y'alls message is great! My quick progress is also owed to my high personal standards and displeasure with making mistakes.
Again, you nailed it! As a 47 year old dad with 31 years of volleyball under my belt, you are teaching me something new with each video. Your passion for the sport and for your friends is palpable. The advice, especially regarding facing challenges and overcoming adversity, is right on the money. I use it to teach my kids how to act and how to respond when things aren’t going the way they expected. Great work. Can’t wait to see more of your videos, and to see you guys healthy and playing again soon.
I love you guys!! You gave me so many advices that my skills are all ready getting better and faster then before!!! And I'm 34 !!!!! Is never too late to learn !!!
I enjoyed this segment just for the fact that I see myself doing a lot what you pointed out. I’ll try opening up to new ideas to see how that works in my fundamentals of getting better.
Yes yes yes! I agree best video so far, my coach speaks of the very same thing. We call it "Eschew Propriety" (I have a T-Shirt that says this), he will be happy to see this video. Nice job Riley
I’ve been watching your videos to learn how to get better at sand vball and I think this is a must to watch before any how-to’s. The part about creativity and the quote on conformity definitely just released me from the idea that I “have” to do it this way in order for it work. Thank you guys!
Omg this is awesome. I get in my head, thinking both forward and backward....I used this today in training with my partner, we both came out about 20% better I'd say. Less caught up in mistakes, focus on the now. Thanks! Huge help. Ps....do you ever run actual training camps? If so where do we sign up :)
Great video, it would have been a little bit more tangible if you walked the audience in a real-life (Beach volleyball) moment. Like what did you do differently and what the thought process was like. How did you decide to do something new and because of the principles you mentioned in the video how did you get better results.
Great Video. Not often we REALLY think while we play/ practice or compete. Today i had a match in the portuguese amateur league of indoor Volleyball. So i had not many but just a couple of Eureka moments. 1st moment was when as a middle blocker i was attacking a ball and had 4 hands in the other side as a wall. I hitted the ball not down or in front but slightly up...causing a block out and so winning a point. And 2nd i back hand set the ball to the other side "beach volley style" and it worked indoor. Point! BAHMMM! Dear Mckibbon i would add to the self awereness 2 important points: being as fit as you can and sel motivation all time. And results come in greater shapes.
Not sure if you already have a video like this, but an idea for a video could be how to not only deal with, but embrace the elements in beach volleyball, such as rain, wind, cold, ect. Great videos as always guys, keep it up!!
Awesome video, guys! The ideas of this video are very similar to the concepts of the book “ The inner game of tennis”. Thanks for the great tips and content! Regards from Brazil!
Great video guys! I’ve been tuning into your channel lately and I’m growing quickly. Beach volleyball is amazing, I’m hooked! Keep up the great work guys!
This was a great video. There's so much truth in everything that was touched on. Great job, not that the others aren't great. This one was definitely different and insightful. Keep it up!
Very true! I wish you talked about how a bit more tho :) One example I have that works for me is retrospectives, after I practice something, I like to sit with whomever I'm working with coach/friend and just review what we did, and what worked/what did not work/what we can try to do to make the next practice better. But I would love more ideas :) Great video!

Great video. 5:00 - “formula” is misspelled as “forumula”.
This is a great philosophical approach to learning. Your ideas and insights are stellar. Thanks for doing what you do.
Your facial expressions says it all. I 100% agree. 👌 🏐
Excellent advice...thanks for sharing! 👍🏾
Awesome advice! Thanks for sharing!
Great video! Completely agree:) I love the creativity aspect!
Fantastic video! Welcome to the infinite game 😁
This was a great video. There's so much truth in everything that was touched on. Great job, not that the others aren't great. This one was definitely different and insightful. Keep it up!
@@themckibbinbrothers it was well done. Good job
Great video!!!
Great Video as always! Can you guys do a video on your nutrition and diet plan to help your performance, overall health and longevity.
That help me you answer my questions thx
Absolutely loved it!
I think I seriously love you.
Just wanted to say: your new intro is liiiiit 😍💥🔥🔥
@@themckibbinbrothers 😂😂😂👍 that work payed off! That intro can stay for a long time!
AHA ! Nice work.
LOVE the intro
How can a talking beard be so wise?!! good stuff.
I can’t get if you’re being sexual with me or not, but thanks for the TIP ;) !
