    Ok so these guys:
    - Walked from the Brooklyn Docks across the Brooklyn Bridge
    - Walked around Wall St
    - Walked up to Little Italy and Chinatown
    - Got back down to the battery to take a boat to the Statue of Liberty
    - Took the subway to Washington Sq Park
    - Rode a cab up to the area around Grand Central, then across town up to Grant's Tomb
    - Got back in a cab, not sure what church that is, but they drove past it, all the way back down to the eastern side of Central Park and took a ride in a horse carriage past that obelisk
    - Rented horses in the park
    - Rented bikes in the park
    - Finally went to the top of Rockefeller Center.
WHAT A DAY, AND IT'S ONLY LIKE 10AM!!!

it was definitely interesting to see Sinatra play this role. His character, Chip, was a young, naive sailor on leave for 24 hours in New York with two of this buddies. Compared to the roles that I'm used to seeing him in, as a gangster or a rover, it was awesome to see him play this part. Gene Kelly was amazing as per usual!

They are actors people!! They aren't speaking in a new "yawk" accent. Sinatra is using his new jersey accent albeit toned down, which to the non new york city residents sounds like new york tawk. Gene Kelly is from Pittsburgh and might be trying to sound like a new york accent, and munshin is a new Yorker from where, I don't know. Besides if they were from NYC character wise, they would not be seeing the sights as tourists. This would ruin the plot!

    • @albertlouisher

@William HELLHASEYIS People from Northern Jersey still have New York accents. From the wiki page "The [New York] accent is spoken in all five boroughs of New York City, Nassau County (Long Island), and, in varying degrees, among speakers in the following: Suffolk County (Long Island) and Westchester and Rockland Counties in the lower Hudson Valley of New York State, as well as Hudson and Bergen Counties in northeastern New Jersey."

This is so much better than the broadway advertisement made recently. This feels real, the guys are friends, and all wording is a musical wording, seamless from song to versing. I am glad the new one was made and they kept it alive for more generations, but nothing beats the kinetics of this piece. It's not nostalgia, it in itself has a cohesion where the other has actors competing for the focus of each shot.

My favorite part is where they're on the observation deck of the then-RCA Building (now the GE Building); 30 seconds without a cut and you can see that they used some sort of lighting or reflectors as the three of them faced north.
All in one take with a 360 turn on a location 67 or so stories up in the air.
    Fantastic and beautifully done.

This was not the first movie, that was filmed in NYC! The First Moving Picture filmed in NYC was :"The Thieving Hand" in 1908 ,but it was only a Shot (5 min 38 sec) The first feature length Film shot in NYC was:"Regeneration"(1915) shoot in the Lower East Side followed by "Lights of New York"(1916),"Coney Island"(1917),and "The Delicious Little Devil"(1919).There were 7 more Movies filmed in NYC in the 1920s,38 more in the 1930s another 42 in the 1940s before "On the Town" (1949).So there were at least 93 Motion Pictures Shot and Filmed on Location in New York City and it's Boroughs before "On the Town"!!! I'm a Vancouver,BC Film Buff, coz I used to live in Vancouver and worked on sets in the Catering Business, and I also was an Extra on "Time Cop","The Hitman" "and on 7 episodes of the TV Series "The Wiseguy".So I have all kind of books about ,movies shot in locations, like NYC,Philly,Toronto,Detroit and Chicago.Cheers

Iconic video from a movie classic. It shows many of the major landmarks of NYC at the time: Rockefeller Center, Grant's Tomb, Central Park, Chinatown, the 3rd Avenue El, Greenwich Village, Brooklyn Bridge, etc.... of course, it would be impossible to see all those sights in one day, but, alas, its a movie.

If you're done with New York you should maybe think about moving to somewhere in the Sun Belt. There are newer, cheaper and more spread out cities and suburbs, less traffic, warmer weather (though these days with global warming who knows anymore), more laid back and friendlier people and depending on your field there may actually be more jobs.

Is there ANY moment ever captured on film -- musical or non-musical -- that is more assured of lifting the spirits of anyone who's in a funk than this glorious trio? What, I wonder, were the people watching the filming from the walkway overlooking the fountain thinking on that lovely day? Did they realize that they were watching the creation of a movie classic?
I will confess, however, that I've always been puzzled by Sinatra's lyric "Gotta see the whole town/From Yonkers on down to the bay." Yonkers is twenty miles up the Hudson from New York in 2019, which means that seventy years ago, when this film was made, it was even further away, since neither of the two cities had grown out to the points that they have since reached. It would have taken the guys most of their precious day just to get back and forth from Yonkers -- just like, fifteen years later, a matchmaker, a dry goods merchant, and his two shop clerks from Yonkers would make the trip in the opposite direction, and have their own miraculous day in New York, to the immense entertainment of years of theater audiences.

Fantastic song, covering all the landmarks of that time. It's interesting how eight years later in the movie "Funny Face" there's a comparable song, "Bonjour, Paris," with another famous gallivanting trio: Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn and Kay Thompson.

'Jules Munshin was terrified of heights. While performing on the tiny rooftop during the song "New York, New York" the only way he could perform the number was while one end of a rope was secured around his waist under his sailor suit. The other end of the rope was secured, off camera, to Stanley Donen. And even so, alert viewers of the scene will notice that during the scene Munshin is almost always touching a wall or a prop or another actor...'

New York, New York, it's a wonderful town!
The Bronx is up and the Battery's down
The people ride in a hole in the ground
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town!
The famous places to visit are so many
    So the guys would say
I know my grandpa wouldn't miss any in just one day
    Gotta see the whole town
From Yonkers on down to the bay, in just one day
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town
The Bronx up and the Battery's down
The people ride in a hole in the ground
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town
We sailed the seas and played a bit of poker way in Mandalay
We've walked the streets till the night was over
And we can safely say, the most fabulous sight is New York
In the light of day, our only day
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town
The Bronx is up and the Battery's down
The people ride in a hole in the ground
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town
Manhattan women are all dressed in satin, so the fellows say
There's just one thing necessary in Manhattan
When you just have one day
Gotta pick up a date, maybe seven or eight
By your way, in just one day
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town
The Bronx is up and the Battery's down
The people ride in a hole in the ground
New York, New York, it's a wonderful town

+Timothy McKain the other "New York, New York" song was not Sinatra's, originally. It was written by Kander & Ebb (the songwriting team behind CABARET AND CHICAGO) for Martin Scorsese's NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), which starred Robert DeNiro and Liza MInnelli. The song was originally written for Minnelli for that film. It was later covered by Frank Sinatra though his rendition is now more closely associated with him than with her. Funny story: When the Yankees win at home, they play Sinatra's version at the end; when they lose, they play Minnelli's.
