  • Romania desperately needs skilled workers, whether in the service sector, construction or care industry. Since Romania joined the EU in 2007, hundreds of thousands have left the country. Businesses are looking to Asia to fill the gap.

As a Romanian, I can answer the question very easily. The owners of these hotels pay next to nothing, that's why they can't attract Romanian workers. Because the workers are not treated fairly, they get cheated with money, underpaid, and overworked, while the owner practices higher rates for rooms and food than in Spain or France. This is nothing new, the owners were exploiting employees in this industry for tens of years, the only difference is that the Romanian employees finally woke up and saw that there are better opportunities for them than being slaves to a hotel owner in Constanta.

And just 2 million Romanians earn the minimum wage!!! Not to mention that many write the minimum wage on the contract and receive more in hand to avoid paying extra taxes.
By the way, the minimum wage is 3,000 lei, roughly double what you said! And you forgot to tell the people that 96% of Romania's population already own a home or some land, so the rent isn't a big issue as it is in other countries!
Stay in school and educate yourself. It's your fault if you accept wages that only a village fool would!

As a Romanian, I feel sick to see these business owners saying that Romanians don't want to work for them and see that they bring foreigners on a low salary and take advantage of them. It breaks my heart and angers me so much to hear that as a foreigner, he is forced to stay with so many other people in the same room. Romanians have also shared rooms with lots of others when working abroad and they still do. Somehow that is very badly seen in Romania and they are made fun of and beeing called « capsunari » etc. I think that we wouldn’t have gotten in this situation if would have been kinder to each other. Plenty romanians, including myself, have left not because of a bad financial situation but because of the judgmental character of people. But we seem to have completely forgotten about the dramas of romanian families that were pulled apart, now we only feel sorry about the foreigners that go through the same. But I guess we deserve our faith as romanians (loosing all those millions of citizens and in the close future the work market will be saturated with the foreigners to a point where it will become unbearable, mark my words; it is what has happened in the west, now the French for exemple are beeing forced to move to the countryside just so that they have some peace and quiet cause foreigners bring pollution of all kinds with them),
that’s what happens when « it’s every man for himself » thinking becomes the motto of a nation. We have never been able to appreciate one another and our culture, yet we appreciate other people’s cultures, food etc.

Left for a better life? They officially invested over 65 billion back in Romania in the last years, according to the bank transactions. Not to mention the cash brought in when flying or driving back to Romania, estimated to a roughly 5 billion per year.
Most of those who left are an unqualified workforce, without higher education, and the overwhelming majority of them still love Romania and dream of returning back to their country and relatives one day. That's why they built houses and started businesses with the money earned abroad.

It doesn't make sense to compare french job opportunities to romanian ones, as many people would rather stay home if they had a decent pay. Sure, there are some people who just want to work in another country, almost regardless of pay, and there are also people who will move to anywhere if they can get a few pennies more, but a lot of people would rather stay home, even if higher paying jobs are available elsewhere. "Labour shortage" places the blame on the workers. "Wage shortage", which is more accurate, places the blame on the employer. Unfortunately the the government instead of letting the "free market" regulate itself, opened a back door to let the immigrants in so that the supply of workers is high enough so that the employers don't have to pay fairly. Of course this patches a problem while creating a whole other one which is arguably worse.

Simple i have to contract jobs at the market rate, already i pay 70 euros net a day and 120 in total (50 go to the state) if i pay more i couldn't make a profit since people are not that wealthy and cant afford prices like in Germany where to do the same job costs about 3 times as much. I can't wait for the wages to go up so that i can charge more for jobs and attract workers from abroad. The other problem is that simply there are not enough workers because if a business pay more to attract workers they are simply taking those people from another businesses . Lots of working age people emigrated abroad and i can't compete with wages from Germany. This is putting a lot of stress to the Romanian economy since with the lack of workers we can't develop our economy fast enough. Lots of businesses who hire here come from abroad and if wages get like those from abroad they will move out and we haven't yet developed our own industry that cam compete with the world giants. So if that happens lots of jobs will disappear. I know this is controver but a developing country needs low wages and lots of workers to develop it's economy. Every now rich country was once a place where labour was abundant and cheap but that allowed them to grow their economy to a level where they could now compete with outsiders, if wages become much higher but we haven't built a powerful industrial and service sector we will face stagnation and an economy unable to grow. I'm Romanian. The biggest problem is cultural; we are taught that Romania is the worst and that it's worse than Iraq living here and that you need to emigrate otherwise you're a loser. 10 years ago salaries were indeed miserable, but that's not the case anymore (of course, some industries fare better and some worse). Very few Romanians make under 500 Euros. The average wage is approx 1000. Trust me, 1000 Euros in a mid sized Romanian town is the equivalent of 2000 in most Westerns countries. Food in supermarkets are similarly priced, but everything else is cheaper (rent, transport and especially going out, restaurants, etc). The communist mentality persists and Romanians love blaming others for their problems. The reality is that Romania is quite functional but Romanians have a hissy fit if you tell them that. They want to be victims. We still have corruption and some problems...but life, especially in Transylvanian cities (Cluj, Sibiu, Brasov, Timisoara, Oradea) resembles that of life in any first world country...

Since west europeans themselves lack huge labor force even now in Offices, they needed cheap labor force from eastern europe. If foreign workers from Africa, Middle-East or SE Asia come to work in Romania, they will immedeatly immigrate to western Europe, where wages are 4 times higher than Romania. Even if they work illegaly they would still make twice as much than Romania. Thats the scary part of joining the EU or any other huge econmical giants. Funny thing is that the EU will never make eastern europe developed as them. Its simply modern colonization.

The main problem is that in Romania as an employee you pay similar level of taxes as in countries like Denmark but instead of enjoying the same quality of infrastructure and social services you get potholes, moldy hospitals and schools with broken toilets. Combine this with the fact that we are not getting paid in euros and we also import most goods and pay similar prices as western europeans for things like clothing and electronics. Now you can see why most romanians are driven away from the country. Even if you are in the top 1% of salary range your quality of life is much worse here and you’d rather take your skills elsewhere. Meanwhile common people realise they can barely make ends meets after working honestly their entire lives.

One more thing: the immigration laws in Romania are highly disadvantegous for foreigners. You'll have to renew your residence permit every year for five years, and only then you can obtain a permanent residency. The whole process of obtaining a work permit takes around 3 months, and if your boss fires you, you have 3 months to find a job and apply again for a new permit which takes around 2 months.
There is no type of blue-card of some sort (like in Germany), meaning that even if you work at a managerial level in a tech company, or as a waitress, you go through the same process every year, for 5 years.

When you raise wages, prices also raise. XD It is not that simple.

@@recikkrecik1886If that was the case, millions of Polacks wouldn't migrate to Western Europe.
No one wants live in Eastern-Europe.

Romania has way better wages than Bulgaria, the average salary in Romania is 1012€ and in Bulgaria is 860€. Poland has an average salary of 1041, so pretty much the same as the Romanian one… and sorry ? Romania is the 11th safest country in Europe with extremely low crime rates… so don’t feel superior to those Romanians that went to work abroad, they come from a way safer country then yours by far.

The wages in Poland are similar to Romania already, and much higher than Bulgaria

The problem is that these owners want to make money hand over fist, but give the employees as little as possible. Instead of raising prices to pay decent wages, they should drive that 2022 Bentley Bentayga for a few more years before buying the latest model.

Is so hard to answer, feel so sorry for this guy. Is ok try to get those who left for France ,UK and Germany to offer instead of 400 eu/month something a bit more than their rent . Share a bit of how much did you got the hotels for,and what job did Ceausescu gaved to you that you becomed wealthy enough to get the hotels ? Is ok relax, none asks this questions in Romania anymore, you are safe.

We've got them here and they work on construction sites but there's a sting to better wages rents in UK are high and there's slum living. The Romanian government should offer higher wages in there own countries. There's corruption in Romania like job agencies fleecing job seekers for money up front to an a non existent job in the UK.
