  • Follow along with me as I show you my method for rooting Japanese maple cuttings. In this video I take summer Japanese cuttings to compare the success rate to the spring Acer Palmatum cuttings that I took in the spring of 2021 & 2022.

    As soon as anyone takes any cutting it should go into water immediately and the leaves should be soaked in water to retain water through the stomata. Every second the cutting is off the branch it is losing water. Willow tree shoots can be soaked in a bucket overnight and that leftover water contains indole-3-butyric acid that can be used as a natural rooting compound. Plus you can take the willow shoots and stick them in soil afterward and root as many Willows as you'd like! Just some extra info for the comment section.

      Actually you don't need to really soak them in water. take longer cuttings about 12 inches long when possible or a branch your trimming. stick the end of the branch between your lips just enough to get saliva on them like I once watched a professor do that taught grafting it keep the stem from closing. carry to your potting medium trim off smaller sections, plant each up to the first double set of nodes, mist inside of a container with soil lower than six inchs and cover with a white bag less light equals less heat, more humidity, And do indoors so the temp stay steady in about 3 to 4 weeks I generally have 4 or 5 roots 3 to 4 inches long. by restricting the light you are allowing the roots to grow before the leafs do.

    I've been watching most of your videos to learn as much as I can. In your last cutting video you mentioned that you are a Disciple of Jesus ( Christian) and I'm so glad you did. It's always good to see that people are taking care of HIS precious earth. I'm so glad I became interested in Japanese Maples 2 months ago. I already have about 6 gallon sizes and 2 10 gallon trees I purchased. Over the past 2 months I've collected about 20 seedlings in various sizes. I also just got a bunch of seeds. I'm finishing up my service mission I've been on for the past year and will start my Japanese maple garden. Keep up the good work you are doing and I hope you will soon realize your dream of your own nursery.
    Thanks for all you do and be Blessed.

    just a little protip for a cannabis farmer. cover the bottom of your box with landscaping fabric up to the soil line. tape it on the outside. this will prevent light penetration and also can keep the soil a bit cooler during the really hot days and warmer during the more cool nights. even though soil barely lets light in, it still can. you can, a lot of the time, shave around a week off of rooting time if the soil is kept between 22 and 27 celcius at all times and you stop light leaks all together. i cant wait to try this with my neighbors gorgeous japanese maple.

    That rooting hormone is simple auxins naturally produced in every plant you've ever eaten or juiced or touched to the gloves and mask are a bit much. Every compound is a "chemical" but we tend to be terrified of purchased chemicals even when they're the same as or made by nature. Sugar is a chemical. I love your videos! They are so informative and helpful!! Please keep up the great work!! I do have a quick question however….I know that with trees that have been grafted, the seeds that you get and sprout will more than likely have the genetics of the base tree that has been grafted onto, but I’m wondering if the same goes for the cuttings? In other words, if I take cuttings from say a deshojo maple tree that has been grown from a grafting, will I be propagating more deshojos, or will they be clones of whatever the tree is that the deshojo was grafted to? I’m completely knew to the process so I apologize if this is a dumb question. Thank you for your time and info!!!

    • @JonnyMaple
      @JonnyMaple  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks - great question. The genetics are carried by the growth above the graft (not the rootstock), so a cutting from the grafted deshojo will grow a deshojo clone.

    We received a Japanese maple starter tree at the end of May. It was a nice looking starter with 4 branches and leaves beginning. We planted it in a planter barrel for our patio. Using mulch, we placed it accordingly. 1 month into summer (hot) the leaves began to wither. We pulled it into a shadier area, but it did not stop it. All of the leaves dried, I pruned them all hoping to just begin again, allowing it to acclimate to the mulch. Now it is well into summer, August, and there has been no new leaves. We planted a Chinese Wisteria across from it in the same manor. It did not have buds when we got it, it was just the little trunk stem coming from the root, but it is blooming.
    What could we be missing? We even bought some Japanese Maple fertilizer specifically for it. We've adjusted watering (at first panic it was too much. Mushrooms began to grow and we'd had to spray Neem oil TRI-fungicide to control it. We've read that they don't require a LOT of water, so we test soil to know when, since the weather has been heat-tricky.
    I am worried that it will not grow at all and we'll not know why.

      Could be the mulch. Straw could have been sprayed with herbicide and manure, even storebought, may have been produced from any that was also treated with herbicide. Just use leaves or fine back mulch as a mulch. I believe these are safer. Some farmers have poisoned their soil for a decade or more using contaminated minutes and mulches

      When you first plant japanese maples you need to really keep them soaked during hot spells until the roots spread out for the first few summers. And most are root bond from being kept in smaller containers so best to bust up the root balls some even if you haft to trim off some of the roots. that way they can grow new feeder roots. Most I actually dig a big enough hole to replace the dirt with a moss and tree bark mix so it holds more water than clay soil does.

      From what I understand it depends on when you get your first cold weather. The cuttings need to develop enough of a root system to get them through the dormancy winter period. For longer season areas you are probably good until early July. I may try to test it this year and do some later cuttings.

    I have a question. I did summer cuttings of Japanese maples just as u did in a see through box. So far they seem so much healthier than all the other cuttings I've tried over the years. Here is my question: I live in Germany and fall is around the corner. Obviously these cuttings are in a protected environment nothing at all as the surrounding. When do you expose (how long after you did the cuttings) these cuttings to "nature" so they can shed their leaves just as they would do in nature? (obviously I will keep them protected over winter in a tempered environment). But when will you lift the lid? I hope you get what I mean.

    • @JonnyMaple
      @JonnyMaple  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the question. I am about to publish a video discussing the next steps on these. But, in short - after 3 months in the clear container, they should be ready to plant into separate pots and then slowly acclimated to the less humid environment. They should then be allowed to experience the fall weather. If your temperatures get really cold in the winter, then protection during extreme periods of cold will be necessary (especially the first few years).

    Acer palmatum 'Ginshi' is pronounced jin shi, meaning silver thread --describing the leaves.

    Does it matter which time of the year?

      Yes, Late June into early July seems to be the best time.

    I have a tons of questions but my local nursery though they have great plants and trees specimens felt somewhat only looking for customers with money and they are just focused on money part. I went to that nursery and it was very overwhelming. Beautiful but overwhelming😅

    How to keep insects out of the breeding tank - With those big holes in the lid, fungus gnats and other insects can easily get into the tank. Greetings from Belgium

      Greetings! I have an OMRI listed Fungicide that I keep ready to use at any sight of fungus (the holes are designed to cut down on this issue - providing some air flow). Bugs have not been a big issue thus far, but you could always put a piece of screen over the holes if it is an issue in your area.

      Me too. My 1st tree grew well for 3 years then got hammered by a long really cold spell. (zone 6) Dug it up and planted a new tree this week ($400). I intend to try wrapping trunk with burlap this winter. I have seen a lot of trees locally so hopefully it will work this time. We’ll see.
