    Hello Oliver, I was looking at Aalto's university Bachelor's programme of Data Science, which is taught in English, and the website says that tuition fees are charged in English programmes. But on the other hand, the website specifies that if I am a citizen of a member country in the EU, I don't need to pay the tuition fee. Could you please tell me wheter I have to pay the tuition or not? Thank you very much and I am really enjoying your videos! greetings from Lithuania.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Arthur and thanks for the positive feedback and the question. As a european union citizen, you do not need to pay tuition fees for english taught university degrees . This applies to both bachelors and masters level programmes.
      I know that the infromation is portrayed on some sites in a confusing manner, but i think this paragraph from aaltos tuition fee webpage summarises it best:
      ”Bachelor's and master's programmes taught in English have a tuition fee for non-EU/EEA citizens. There are no fees for doctoral programmes.” Source: www.aalto.fi/en/admission-services/scholarships-and-tuition-fees (paragraph 3).

    Hello, thank you for the in informative video! I want to apply for the bachelor's programme in Design but SAT/ACT is not accepted for the study option of Design. So how can I apply for the programme and the scholarship?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sylvia and thanks for the question! The bachelor's programme for Design at Aalto university does not consider SAT's because those tests are not relevant for the design programme. Instead, they use a multi-step application process that tests your aptitude and suitability for the programme. Aalto university says the following on their website:
      _"Admission to Bachelor's Programme in Design consists of several stages. The admission is based on preliminary assignments, intake assignments and an interview._
      _The preliminary assignments are evaluated Pass/Fail. Only applicants who pass the preliminary assignments will be invited to the next stages of the admission process. The intake assignments are evaluated on a scale of 0-75 and the interview is evaluated on a scale of 0-25. The maximum total score is 100 points. The applicants are ranked based on their total score from the intake assignments and the interview. Applicants can be screened out after each stage."_ Source: www.aalto.fi/en/study-at-aalto/admission-to-bachelors-programme-in-design-bachelor-and-master-of-arts-3-yrs-2-yrs

      I see, thank you for the reply. I have a few more questions which I hope you could help answer them. Since I’m planning to apply for the coming January application, often when do you start your study once you are accepted into the university? Also, after finishing bachelor and master degree in a Finnish University, are there opportunities for Non-European students to find a career in Finland, or are they required to return to their country, as I understand some countries seem to work?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mimiryuu8892 The semester in Finnish universities start during the first week of September. There might be some orientation for new students (especially important since you come from abroad) during the end of August, but my recommendation for all is to fly into the country a few weeks before you start your studies. This will allow you to get to know the country, and to get your personal things in order before starting the semester. The first weeks of your studies will be super hectic so if you leave everything to the last minute, you'll be running around like crazy.
      There are plenty of opportunities to stay and work in Finland after your graduation. Finding work as a foreigner might seem a bit hard at the beginning, but it is good to know that there are a plenty of great opportunities in the country. Id love to talk more about this topic in the future - its really hard to condense everything here in the comments.
      More information about work permits after you've graduated can be found here (Finnish Immigration Services): migri.fi/en/after-graduation
      Hope this helps :D. Please tell me if I missed something or if you need some more specifics.

    Hi Oliver, thank you for your helpful video.
    I'm looking at Aalto's University Bachelor's programme of ChemE which is taught in English, and the website said that only students who are liable to pay tuition fees at can apply fro Aalto's University Scholarship. So this means if I don't have enough finance for tuition fees, I'm not allowed to get the scholarship?
    Also, the SAT is definitely required when it comes to both application and scholarship right, especially ? As long as I get 60 ECTs each year, I won't need to pay tuition fees for next 2 years if I got a scholarship before?
    Thank you very much and I love your videos.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man and thanks for the great questions and positive feedback!
      I think you might have mixed up the information on tuition fees a bit so let me elaborate: whether or not you need to pay tuition is not reliant on whether or not you have the money to pay for it or not. Instead, whether or not you need to pay tuition ('liable to pay tuition') depends on your citizenship. In Finland, tuition fees apply ONLY to *non European Union and European Economic Area citizens*. This means that you need to pay tuition if you are NOT a citizen of a EU or EEA country.
      All applicants who are liable to pay tuition (aka all non EU or EEA citizens) CAN apply for university scholarships whether or not they would have the money to pay for tuition to begin with. Important note: you apply for university scholarships with the same application form that you use to apply to the university so there is no separate application process for the scholarship.
      About the SAT's: Aalto univeristy is about to release their updated application requirements for each programme but since they dont yet have them online, i cant save 100% whether or not SAT's are required for the Chemical Engineering application. However, most of Aalto's English taught bachelor's level programme application do require SAT's to be taken.
      As i mentioned above, there is no separate application for the university admission and the scholarships, rather these are both done with the same application form. The SAT's are a mandatory part of the application so yes, they will impact whether or not you are granted a scholarship, but you do not have to take separate SAT's for the admission and the scholarship. All is done with the same application form and documents.
      Do note that, just like university admission in general, scholarships in finland are granted on a competitive basis so only the best applicants are granted one. This means that if you want to maximise your chances of getting a scholarship, you need to do really, really well in your SAT's.
      About your final question considering the credits and tuition fees. I dont remember the exact number of credits that you need to do, but the answer to your question is in general yes. If you are granted a scholarships, it will cover your tuition fee for the normative period of a degree. This means that you can study for 3 years for you bachelors and for 2 years for your masters without paying any tuition fees.

    • @DuongNguyen-bk3ep
      @DuongNguyen-bk3ep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RoadtoFinnish Thank you for the detailed answer and I really appreciate that. "Admission is based on either SAT test results or grades obtained in Finnish Matriculation Examination, IB, EB or DIA/RP degree.". I saw this line on the website was a little confused. For me, it means that I only need the SAT test results for the application. However, the website also says that SAT and ST are required so there seem to be some discrepancies here.
      So if I have only 1 chance to get either SAT or ST (math) which test should I take for the application or both of them are compulsory?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right so the line that you quoted basically refers to the fact that there are two ways to apply to study in Finland that depends to which of these two groups you belong to:
      1. Those who have done their high school in Finland
      2. Everyone else
      Those who have done high school in Finland apply using their high school diplomas and by taking a separate entrance exam that is based on a selection of high school subjects. These tests can be only done in Finnish or Swedish so its not possible for international students.
      Everyone else applies using this "secondary" system that is specifically built for international students. Why im using a broad term instead of just sayding "using the SAT's" is because the exact test (whether it be the SAT's, TOEFL, IELTS or something else) depends on the school and the specific degree programme that you are applying to. For example, when applying to a bachelors degree in arts and design, you might have to prove your english skills with IELTS but you are not required to take the SAT's. Rather, the application is based on multiple practical design assignments that measure your creative skills. So as you can see, the exact application process and the requirements vary quite a bit.
      Again, to your question about the SAT's and ST's, make sure to check the *programme specific application requirements* when Aalto publishes them hopefully within October or November. That page will specify which exact tests (math, writing, language or something else) you need to take. Also do note that there will be plenty of time to do the tests because you dont have to deliver the results at the time of applying (at least according to what ive read from Aalto's website). So you should be fine even if you can do just one atm.

      @DuongNguyen-bk3ep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RoadtoFinnish Oh really I can take the tests after the application period, at least before the time they have their decisions? I didn't see that information on the website, could you send me a link to that information

    What is the IT job scene here for foreigners after completing in higher studies in Finland ???

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a general rule, very good. The IT sector is the fastest growing field in Finland and many of the companies working in this sector do not require Finnish language skills. Having said this, i need to also disclaim that having a degree in IT is no guarantee of getting a job. All that matters are your skills. So if you are proficient in what you do and your skillset is in demand in Finland, you should have no issues finding a job.
      If you are interested in this topic, i just published an interview with a highly experienced recruiter who specialises in IT and game industries. Do I require to give exams such as GRE or IELTS (my bachelors degree is entirely in English and can be certified by the university). What deadline I must follow for the application in general for 2021 batch?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Prachi and thanks for the questions.
      *ABOUT ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTS*
      This is what I found from Aalto and EIT websites:
      English proficiency tests are waived for applicants with:
      1. A higher education degree (University Bachelor's or Master's) fully instructed in English from a university or a university of applied sciences physically located in an EU or EEA country or Switzerland.
      2. A higher education degree (University Bachelor's or Master's) in English from a university that is physically located in one of the following countries: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand. Please note that branches from universities outside of the mentioned countries can also not be accepted to be granted a waiver.
      In all other cases, we need evidence of one of the following qualifications and scores from tests taken within the past two years.
      1. IELTS Academic test
      2. University of Cambridge (CEA & CPE)
      3. TOEFL internet-based test, IBT
      Based on this information, I would have to assume that unless your current school is a branch of a university that is physically located in either USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, you have to take one of the English proficiency tests mentioned above.
      More information can be found here: www.innoenergy.com/for-students-learners/master-school/dates/requirements/
      *ABOUT THE ADMISSION DEADLINES*
      The application period for the Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) programme for Aalto was held between 16.3.2020 - 26.4.2020. I did not find any information on the next application period for SELECT Aalto but I would presume that it will be held around the same time next year (just my assumption, not fact). If you want to make sure that this is the case, you can contact the program coordinator at Aalto (bore.helenius@aalto.fi) for more information.
      More info on Aalto University websites: www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/masters-programme-in-environomical-pathways-for-sustainable-energy-systems-select-eit

    Thank you for your useful video. I plan to apply to computer Science bachelor program Aalto University. You know what standard to get 100% merit scholarship . How Sat score I need to have or anything ....

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question! It is not possible to say for sure. First of all, aalto does not publish the amount of scholarships they grant each year. Second, it is not possible to say what the minimum SAT requirements for 100% scholarships are (I explain this later in this comment). Aalto University states on their website:
      "The applicants are ranked based on the programme’s admission criteria and the best applicants liable to pay fees may be granted scholarships."
      What I do know is that the minimum scores for admission at Aalto for a BSc in technology and Engineering programme are as follows:
      SAT test: 1200
      AND
      SAT subject test in mathematics: 650
      👆since these are the minimum requirements for admission, it is logical to assume that a 100% scholarship requires for the applicant to be among the highest percentiles of the applicants.
      Also good to note that Aalto does not offer a bachelors degree in computer science (per say) in English. These are the current available bachelor degree programmes that you can apply to in English:
      1. Chemical Engineering
      2. Computational Engineering
      3. Data Science
      4. Digital Systems and Design
      5. Quantum Technology
      Hope this helps. Please tell me if you want to me elaborate on a specific topic. Ill be glad to help.

      OliverR do you know any school they have 100% scholarships for Computer Science or programming . I do some Sat text I think I can get > 1450, my GPA 8/10 . But I didn’t attend any activity or competition but do a lot of part time job .do you think it works?

      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure, so just to specify my previous answer a bit: Aalto University does offer programming on a bachelor level, but it is wrapped into the previously mentioned degrees.
      These degrees have quite a lot of programming, but also a lot of other topics -> thus they are not purely computer science programmes. Based on this, I would recommend that you go through the curriculums for the Data Science and the Digital Systems and Design degrees and see if either of them seem interesting to you.
      Digital Systems and Design: into.aalto.fi/display/enbsctech/Digital+Systems+and+Design+2018-2020
      Data Science: into.aalto.fi/display/enbsctech/Data+Science+2018-2020
      About your question on competitions and work experience: I can't really help here. Im not that familiar with the SAT based applications so i have no experience or knowledge on whether these will impact your application. If you want to get more information on this topic, I would recommend that you send an email to admissions@aalto.fi and ask for more specific information.

    Hello, Oliver, i have an inquiry...I have received Category A scholarship by Aalto business School which basically covers the whole tuition for the Master's Program. Now my question is how many ECTS should i need to complete in 1 year so that my scholarship is sustained? i mean to maintain my scholarship how many credits should i need to complete per year so that i can keep my scholarship?? Thank you.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man and congrats on the scholarship! That is pretty darn huge 👊.
      Basically you need to complete at least 45 ECTS per academic year. This is required both by the university as well as the immigration service which will not renew your residence permit unless this progress is made.
      *Here is how Aalto puts it on their website:*
      The progress of your studies is checked each term and your scholarship may be discontinued if your studies do not follow your approved personal study plan. If you have any issues affecting your study progress, it is essential that you contact the Student Service Desk of your school and actively seek help so that your scholarship is not affected. A failure to resolve any pending issues may result in the discontinuation of your scholarship on the basis of insufficient study progress.
      As a guideline, scholarships are automatically continued for the standard duration of the degree programme unless:
      → studies do not follow approved personal study plan so that graduation is likely to be delayed by more than one semester
      → studies progress so slowly that graduation is likely to be delayed by more than one semester
      → studies progress below 45 ECTS credits per academic year leading to discontinuation of residence permit
      → the terms and conditions of scholarship agreement are broken
      In such cases the school will contact the student and request a meeting where the scholarship is discussed and further course of action agreed.
      More info (Control + F for the heading Discontinuation of Scholarship): into.aalto.fi/display/enopisk/Tuition+fees+and+scholarships

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man and thanks for the question! This depends on the particular bachelors programme that you applying to. Each bachelors programme has different application requirements. Some require SATs, some GMATs or TOELFs. If you know which programme you are interested in, i could look up this information.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey man. Since you were admitted to Aalto, the following rules should apply to your scholarship:
      Aalto scholarships are granted for the normative period of study of the degree programme. The normative study period for a full-time master's student is two (2) years. Scholarships require full-time studying according to your personal and approved study plan.
      In short: Your category A scholarship for your master's studies should cover two (2) years of studies.

    Hi Oliver! I wonder how many university can one apply to?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey and thanks for the great question! When applying with the Joint Application system (more information here: studyinfo.fi/wp2/en/higher-education/how-to-apply-for-bachelors-and-masters/) you can apply to up to six (6) study programmes with one application form. These 6 options may include degree programmes from one or several different higher education institutions. There are three joint applications per year, two that offer study programmes in English (one in spring and one in autumn) and one that offer study programmes only in Finnish and Swedish (in spring)
