I have the same boat but in orange camo. Love it. I'm real "iffy" about drilling holes in it. I may just zip tie them together and leave them on top of the boat
Kuyler Palmer that will work too. I just hate the tangled mess of transducer cable that fish finder manufacturers give you. The thru hull fittings eliminate that problem. Take a look at the yakattack cellblock if you are wary of drilling.
Nice vid! I have an original Big Game and just picked up an elite 4 HDI and am thinking about using their scupper mount. In the instructions it says that you can cut the mount/bracket that you slide onto the transducer so it actually goes inside the scupper hole. If you did that do you think it would sit more flush inside the transducer scupper versus protruding as it is now? It was hard to tell from the angle how much room there is between the yak and transducer.
James Cobb you certainly can cut the bracket and have the transducer up in the hole a little more, but it won't be as stable. Maybe use some foam to help out. As mounted in the video, the xducer does protrude somewhat away from the protection of the scupper recess. I am just cognisent of it when I drag it or set it down so I dont damage it.
Greg Sterley Ahhh that makes sense. Well I should be getting my mount soon so I'll have a better idea. I just know that I'm not as cautious as you and I don't want to deal with a snapped transducer. I'll definitely look into a way to keep the transducer stable though. I hadn't thought about that. Thanks again!
I have run into the same problem with the transducer not being fulling protected, but I am not satisfied with your solution of "living with it" and "being congnizant" of the problem.
+Greg Sterley (Catch Me if you Paddle) Yes, there is something else to do. Don't mount it that way. Transducers are not cheap to replace. I'm returning the scupper mounting kit and either going over the side or through the hull. More likely the latter. I can deal with some loss of accuracy. Ever see the bottom of a kayak after repeated usage? Your kayak can take it, but your transducer won't over time.
+Laura A. D. I have mounted the transducer to the inside of the hull. seems to be okay. I do see what I think is a lot of background noise; tiny blue flecks on the screen.
+Laura A. D. to each their own. I agree that the bottom of a yak does get beat up pretty good, but this application typically launches off the beach and paddles in open water. We don't take it on the flats very often and it has never seen a river.
+Greg Sterley (Catch Me if you Paddle) Don"t forget, sand is an abrasive. I've actually found a better solution. Railblaza makes some really nice transducer arms/mounts. They look good and work really well. The arm moves easily to avoid anything in the way or to bring in the transducer prior to getting out of the water. I was able to position the transducer cable so as to keep it from hitting anything and getting cut, but may also wrap it in a protective sleeve.
Great video. I'm waiting for my BGP2 and Lowrance Elite 5 CHIRP to get here. I want to mount mine like you did. What thru hull fittings did you use. I think you said west marine in the video but I can't fine them. They made a clean job of it and I'd like to get some.
Cant you modify the plastic piece that holds the transducer to be abit shorter? There is abit room there, wouldnt that be just enough for the transducer to be hidden in the scupper hole? Just wondering as I myself own a BG II, and im looking to buy a lowrance fishfinder.
+Gjedda I bet you could, but I would have to take a closer look. I wanted to install the kit as "stock" as possible to highlight what you get in the box.
Yea, I just watched the video, and while the stock installation would be enough for me, I saw the comments and thought that there has to be some sort of modification you could do with the plastic clip. If I decide to buy a Lowrance fish finder and this kit, ill definitely will try to modifie it so it fits better.
Will water still drain out of that scupper or is it plugged now? It looked like there were holes in the mounting pieces. I am looking at this as a mounting solution but I'm not sure I'd want water standing in one side of my kayak is why I ask.
Chris, it will still drain as long as you don't use the foam plug that is supplied. There are holes/slots on the top and bottom brackets that allow water out.
I didn't like having to scoot forward to put it into the water, it was a pain. It also creates a lot of drag and noise when your paddling and it has to be mounted so far forward to be out of your paddle stroke. The scupper hole is a much more efficient place IMO.
hey i am mounting my lowrance hook 3x fish finder and i was just wondering where did you buy your 1 inch through hole because i have been looking for a good month now and havent found one
Terrible quality video. Got seasick watching and half he time the critical parts of the picture are cut off, poorly lit or, not shot close enough. Narration is very good, and I think I got the gist of it. Gonna give it a try. Thanks
Can you tell me what size screws you used for your Scotty Rod Holders? ? I noticed you had them and I just bought 2 of them and neither came with hardware ... Can you tell me what size screws you used ?? It would help me out greatly ....
Try these out: www.austinkayak.com/products/16707/Scotty-Backing-Plate-441.html This is the best way to mount Scotty rod holders IMO. I use them for all my mounting needs.
Greg, do you mean under under the first plate that is there with the kayak or under the actual Scotty rod holder? ? I'm so excited, I just ordered a few of those ! ! !
Steve o not sure what you mean by "first plate." Place your rod holder where you want it. Drill your holes, place the backing plate under where you drilled your holes and secure the rod holder to the backing plate with the supplied hardware.
Great instructional video, I own the Garmin Striker 4 and will that transducer work with my fish finder?
Not sure, would have to see the transducer

Understandable, but until ocean kayak comes out with a deeper hole there is not much else to do.
+Greg Sterley (Catch Me if you Paddle) Yes, there is something else to do. Don't mount it that way. Transducers are not cheap to replace. try the Hobie thru hull kit, way better than the west marine brands
Greg Sterley Thanks! Just ordered some.

thanks man.
This video helped a lot.

What are those pieces used to seal the wire passed through the hull, I cant find them on west marines website
www.austinkayak.com/products/12509/Hobie-Thru-Hull-Wiring-Kit.html?k=hobie%20thru
Try these, way better than the west marine ones I used in this video
Greg Sterley
thanks
nice fox svo in the background
good eye my friend, you are correct. Not many know about the SVO anymore. She is one hell of a car, still only has 20k miles!
I own a 91 fox coupe myself so I can smell them a mile away.lol
Chuck Mangum 😉
You didn't show how you got the cosmetic cap of to begin with!
to get the cap off you have to push in two clips that oppose each other and it comes free. I hope that answers your question.
Yep- I figured it out- I didn't see those little tabs.
Cuivre 👍

hey do you want to sell that transducer arm ?
sorry, using it on something else.
thank you ! I have the same kayak as you do . but I have seen the transduser install flush with the kayak scupper holes

Greg, I looked everywhere and couldn't find these ! ! ! Thank you ... Did you mount the backing plate under the wall mounts it gave us on the Kayak?
Steve o yep, rod holder goes above the plastic, backing plate below. Simple, strong and secure. You won't be disappointed.
Greg, do you mean under under the first plate that is there with the kayak or under the actual Scotty rod holder? ? I'm so excited, I just ordered a few of those ! ! !
