    We arrived in the Philippines last week. While at the airport, a white taxi service told us to use the meter. After entering the taxi and the driver started driving, he let us know the taxi service to drive us to bgc would cost us about 1000 pesos! (It should cost around 300!). We immediately told him to stop the car and exited. We later learned he was an illegitimate taxi service that used a “meter” but his meter was not calibrated properly (his meter went from 40 pesos to 70 pesos in about 10 seconds). We also later learned to avoid the white taxis at the airport because they are not properly contracted.

      @@peterhuang1431 I think so. I was told only the yellow taxis are the legitimate ones with unaltered meters

    • @-BigIi-
      @-BigIi- ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, be very very careful in the Manila area; although there's supposed to be a heavy crackdown on this, many taxi drivers - legitimate or otherwise - still rig their meter with a device to make it count faster, thus charging you more; this jump you speak of I saw it once, way before I was warned it exists.

      @@peterhuang1431 These problems have been going on for years. The Philippines government seems more interested in working out how to scam visitors for more cash than taking care of such shameful problems. I hear they are looking for a way to force visitors to the Phils to prove they are not criminals *before* they leave, and failing to do so would mean losing your flight; which means going to a certain office and filling out a form and going through a checking process - O yeah, and you have to pay for this. To prove you are not a criminal.

  • @axelortiz907
    @axelortiz907 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Due to some taxi drivers ripping off tourists I stopped using them. Unless extreme emergency ( but i know what are average fares supposed to be) I let driver know I've been there before. I feel comfortable riding the rest. Suggestion: ask around what are fares supposed to be, pinoys are very friendly and will let you know what is reasonable price to pay. Also! pinoys will tell you what bus to take from point A to B.

    Thank you for providing an excellent and informative service. Yes, a welcome service to us, who have yet to make it to the Philippines 🇵🇭. I use Uber and Lyft as opposed to taxis. It’s safer, comes to you, you can see who’s driving and the car and know how much your fare is beforehand (which I opt for). Don’t want to deal with seedy people (they’re everywhere). Thank you, young man. 👍🏼🇵🇭🇺🇸

    When I travelled to Tagaytay a tricycle drives tried to charge me about 4000pesos - if I recall correctly - to travel from Tagaytay main roundabout along Tagaytay Nasugbu H\way to the Lake hotel, just about 2km. The sad thing is that the person I was with - during such efforts to scam me - would say nothing at all; as long as their countryman is gaining from a scam many of them usually say nothing, showing you the general level of disrespect; but I already knew that this price was a man trying to be stupid.

    Insist on putting on the meter when riding a taxi. They can refuse to give you a ride, but if they already agreed to give you a ride they can't insist on a flat rate because they can lose their permit to operate

  • @joshuarizalforeman816

    It seems as though this post, or maybe your videos in general, are aimed at people with zero 'savvy'. I have my own transport so issues such as this don't affect me. If I need to I use trikes for local travel and I know the going rate so if I get overcharged I simply go to another guy. I have a couple of regular drivers, who have a stand near my house and a stand at the mall/market whom I always give a small tip. On the rare occasion I have to use a taxi I just tell the driver to stick it on the meter before we set off. Ditto re trikes, if the driver gets pissy, I just go to the next one. (I actually like jeepneys, though my wife doesn't, primarily because everyone knows the cost and I am considered a novelty). The same applies for shopping at wet-markets etc. If I think I'm being ripped off, I just go to the next store, who welcome the repeat custom. As for MRT, try taking the MTR in HK at rush hour!

    I get picked up by my family members outside the airport. They also get me the best exchange rate for my U.S. Dollars from their local neighborhood. I don't exchange money at the airport. I learned from my mistakes from the 1980s, taking transportation and paying in dollars. I got Rip off BigTime. I paid this taxi driver that I met from a bar. Agree to pick me up from my hotel in Olongapo and drive me to Angeles City to deliver a personal letter to a bar girl from my boss in the military. He charged me $300 dollars for that round trip. Never again, my hard earn will ever leave from me. I own two condos - one near the mall of asia and the second in makati. I am getting ready to retire with my wife and move to BGC.

I have never seen so many people that will try and scam u it was 10 times worse than anything i ever saw in Thailand and the traffic was horrific and so was the medical care. I got food poisoning twice and each time i spent 6 to 8 hours sitting outside the ER and never saw a doctor I just ended up going home and fighting thru it and the food there is no comparison. I gave it a try there but I think I will stay here in Thailand and it is less expensive here maybe in the future will try somewhere else there but definitely not BGC.
