The US town so remote you can only get there by going through Canada

  • For many communities, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are in the rearview mirror. But for others, especially those located on US borders, are still struggling to recover.
One remote Washington state town is concerned about a new federal requirement that could make things worse.
Point Roberts, Washington, is located in a pocket of the country that is rare in its geography and its beauty. It's one of a few American "pene-exclaves," only accessible by land throughout Canada.

Isn't it ironic that in order to get the stereotypical happy American family with a big yard & without paying $900K+ in a gated community, you'd have to live 10 miles from the Canadian border?

I've been to Point Roberts several times but had to go each time through Canada to get there. (The American children there take a bus which first goes north into Canada and then south into the United States to their school in Blaine, Washington. The friends of many of the children who live in Point Roberts usually include Canadians children.)

bobbybob, you failed to mention that the city of Bellingham in Whatcom County, Washington is sometimes called "Bellywash" by small children.

Maybe invite Weingart to build homeless housing tower near border and extend Canada line to point Robert south downtown. And then allow Canadian or American to apply those housing then point Robert should have enough population to build hospital or multiple transit or lrt

Another deterrent is that the US has gotten so damn dangerous. It's one of the main reasons I stopped visiting. Especially after trump.
Honestly, their lives would be much more easier if that tiny bit of land got converted into Canadian land.

You must've forgotten about the BLM riots that caused millions in damages and multiple city's buildings burned down, all because a multi time felon drug addict died in police custody (which literally happens to everyone all the time, but because he's black it was a problem?)

Your comment actually made me laugh out loud. “Especially after Trump”? Let me remind you that it was the Dems that defunded the police. It was the Dems that have excused criminal behavior so that Home Depot and others have to lock everything up. And it is people like you who are the cause of it. You shite the bed, then want to blame someone else, when YOU are responsible because you voted for it. Get a clue lady.

Why is it so hard to have proof of canine immunizations? Good grief-even your local doggie daycares demand them? Am I missing something? Why would any responsible pet owner object to microchipping?

Why is it so hard to have proof of canine immunizations? Because there are no vets in Point Roberts. Something they said in the story. And as for the point the gentleman made about rabies vaccinations, we've done such a good job vaccinating and defending against it that it is virtually unheard of these days. Especially in suburban environments. And the resistance is not to the vaccination itself but to the requirement to travel over an undefended LAND border. Especially from an area without a vet and no in-country ferry service - their only way to get to anywhere else in the US is to drive through Canada. They don't even have an airport.

Do you really want to have to wait in line at 10 minutes for that every time someone has a pet to show that.
And explain to me how they're going to show proof like the required if there ain't no veterinarian on the only part of the US Territory think before you comment it's a very small territory it doesn't have a population enough to meet the requirement that Canada wants before crossing in and crossing back into the United States.

@@Chrissimpson-oo4qx There are veterinarians nearby-even in Bellingham! Where do these folks take their pets/animals for vet care? Come on-why would Canada want unvaccinated animals? Responsible animal owners (both pet and commercial) understand the health reasons for their animals to have the appropriate care. Records need to be kept; receipts and tags are available; there are simple ways to show proof. Maybe the 10 minutes is part of the "price" to live in that particular part of the country. May you never be bitten by a rabid animal.
