With Godzilla's tail,
It is highly suggested each evolution became deadlier than the last in order to "survive".
Towards the end, Godzilla possibly recognized HUMANS as the dominant, deadliest species and tried to "evolve" into them next.
Not sure if it's true, but I read somewhere that in order to combat multiple smaller enemies attacking him, Godzillas next evolution was to sprout all those human sized creatures to attack the soldiers one on one. Supposedly, they would act as a sort of hive collective while the main monster continued his rampage. Bizarre but awesome idea and one I'd love to see them continue if they ever make a sequel.

@@CircuitReborn Hadn't thought about the scientist, interesting theory. I'm still of the mind it wasn't though, and rather just Godzilla not only starting to "evolve" the mini-G's off him, but I feel the tail - especially once it went laser-mode - was evolving into more of a CatDog situation, with a second head on the other end.
While I'm hyped for Minus One I'm sad we won't get a sequel to Shin 😞

The motif for this version of Godzilla is EVOLUTION.
Every time it changed it was adapting to whatever was being thrown at it at that moment. Struggling to walk on land? Evolve some bigger, sturdier legs. Getting overheated? Evolve a self-cooling system. Being bombed from the sky? Evolve the ability to shoot lasers from mouth and back. Too many targets? Tail laser. You get the picture.
The final scene was Godzilla's next evolution. What better way is there to combat against an army than to become an army yourself?
It only gets more terrifying when you think about what could've happened had they not stopped the monster when they did.
Or what could have happened if America did drop that Nuke and it failed to kill it.

I think there are concept arts from the creators of Shin Godzilla showing how Godzilla would evolve further and further and the humanoid version wouldn't have been the last one

A little thing I noticed. Their codename for 'Hydra-Slayer' during the operation to deal with Godzilla is known as 'Ame-no-Habakiri' in Japanese. Ame-no-Habakiri is the sword of the Storm God known as Susano'o, who is most famous for the legend of how he decapitated the 8 headed giant serpent/dragon, Yamata no Orochi. Orochi was put down in a similar way Shin Godzilla is, where the serpent was given powerful liquor that put it into a deep sleep, after which Susano'o killed it.

The sequence when Godzilla destroys the entire city after the US attack is absolutely disturbing. The visuals and music are spine tingling.
Yeah. For me, it evoked the WWII firebombing of Tokyo by the US. I know that's not what the movie was about, but it's the first thing that sprang to mind for me.
Easily my favorite Goji movie. Much more akin to the dark tone of the 1954 original, but this time instead of just being about nuclear bombs, Shin was a direct response to how the Japanese government responded, or failed to respond, to the typhoon and Fukushima.
And that creepy last shot.... Godzilla was still evolving. Really wish they'd do a sequel, but I'll be happy with Minus One when it comes out....
That last scene showing it's tail was to show how godzilla was responding to humanity, first he reacted to the bombs and missiles with his powers, but once it recognized humanity as the main threat it started to make a "counter" to that threat, think of humans as a disease, godzilla being the main body would sooner or later produce antibodies for that virus, and those humanoid creatures were that antibody. They would sprout from it's tail and spread through the earth, killing any and every single human they spot while the main body grows even more and evolves even more, if there were a sequel it would be a bad ending showing how shin godzilla brought hell to the planet and completely wiped all life out of it.

Shin Godilla is a prehistoric species of fish that was forced to feed off the radiation waste that was dumped into the ocean. The radiation mutated his body against his own will. Every second of its existence, Godzilla was in agony, it's own body was forcing it to move. It had to surface because it was overheating. @@user-ir8yq7ik6r That is exactly my theory. Some, like Blind Wave's Godzilla expert, were a bit rude when I mentioned it. Blind Wave is another reaction channel. They had a Godzilla expert guest who didn't say much about his thoughts regarding the movie, and even when I brought my theory up, they dismissed it and said they couldn't be wrong regarding a theory. They said that the scientist didn't release Godzilla and I said that I think they were half wrong about Dr. Goro-Maki.
After a few viewings of this movie, I have come to a theory regarding Godzilla's origins. It seems no one thinks about the beginning before Godzilla is shown. The boat that the scientist owned is found abandoned right where Godzilla becomes its first evolution. Does this mean anything? Perhaps, did the scientist commit suicide for the turmoil Japan put his wife through? And if so, what happened to him? We don't ever really get any information as to where he was and if indeed he did throw himself off the boat.
My theory is that he might not have even committed suicide. Maybe he dived overboard and swam down into the bay and possibly the radiation contained in that area made him merge with fish and other sealife which became the start of Godzilla...? Going over the movie quite a few times, I have never heard any explanation as to why the boat was abandoned and where the scientist is. It's implied that he committed suicide...

Shin Godzilla is a very unique Godzilla movie. A god-like creature made by humanity who couldn't help but keep evolving in the most suffering way possible. Godzilla was neither a villain or a hero, but a victim.
Shin is one of few Godzilla movies that i can reccomend to someone who isnt already a Goji fan and expect them to be compelled by it.

I mean the Monsterverse Godzilla is more the "friendly" Godzilla of the 70s(?) japanese version while Shin Godzilla is a call back to the original '54 version actually having a meaning behind it rather than "just" a Monster movie.
the thing I love about Shin Godzilla is how inflexible he is, he just seems like a moving statue that is hell-bent on nothing but keep moving forward, it's a literal walking tumor of nature that human created from their carelessness.
I actually really love shin godzilla because he is treated like an actual monster , a creature , a threat to humanity especially since hes a metaphor for nuclear bombs. In most godzilla movies hes treated as a somewhat hero and is humanized to an extent like the monsterverse. Here he is a creature in ungodly amount of pain do the the radiation in its body constanly splitting and morphing it flesh and is an animal just trying to survive. Not to mention the body horror and eldritch elements to it, especially when you watch the deleted scenes it makes it much more horrifying.
The movie does have its problems here and there but other then that its a good monster flick.
Shin Godzilla is a return to old school Godzilla. A stunning movie, still languishing at an utterly absurd 6.8 on IMDB for no good reason. In my book it's a solid 9. I think part of the problem is that many Western audiences didn't understand it properly.

The original 1954 Godzilla was stated to have had a burning hatred for humanity because he was mutated by nuclear bomb tests, turning him into the atomic monstrosity we see in the movie. He was also theorized to have had a family that was supposedly killed by these same bomb tests. As such, he developed a deep hatred for humanity and actively went out of his way to cause them as much suffering as possible.
Shin Godzilla, while still keeping the origin of being mutated by nuclear radiation, is much more sympathetic. He’s completely unaware of the destruction and death he causes as it’s simply an unintentional side effect of him just trying to get around. He seemingly bares no hatred towards humans and only attacks out of fear and self-preservation. Simply put, he’s portrayed as an animal trying to survive as best he can with the confusing circumstances he suddenly found himself in.

Incredible movie! The Japanese really know how to make Godzilla downright horrifying. The visage and the growl send shivers down my spine. I have no idea how they did all these shots, close up or from the sky. Models and CGI. I was overwhelmed with how well-done this movie was. Thanks for doing this one. Really enjoyed it, and I was a gobsmacked as you were. You know, in the last scene, it seems as if they stopped it in time before it evolved into what looked like human offshoots. Frightening out the wazoo!!! :)
The moment Godzilla starts the Atomic breath and the music kicks in, i legit start to tear up out of pure excitement of the beautiful yet disastrous and tragic scene

The reason the whole movie is about them making decisions is because the director is making a commentary about how bureaucratic red tape gets in the way of saving people when disasters like Fukushima happen.

I think the best part of the movie is what may make some of the interactions and scenes seem a little weird. The best part is that it wasn't made by westerners. It doesn't have all of the typical western tropes that we have come to expect from every movie and so things like how the characters speak with each other is much less fluid and much more like a real life situation. It feels "weird" to us westerners because it lacks those typical things that are in almost every movie.
It's even more horrific to know that it's roars are those of extreme pain.
Shin is a creature that shouldn't exist, let alone evolve the way he does. Every step, breath and literally anything he does is nothing but agony for him.
I'm also recommending you watch the deleted scenes (which shouldn't have been taken out as to form a suitable plot line). Gross, disturbing and dark as F.
This movie focused so much on the bureaucracy because it was meant to be a criticism of the way Japan's government mishandled the Fukushima disaster (the nuclear reactor damaged in a massive earthquake), mostly by downplaying the severity and delaying the response.

Shin Godzilla is meant to recapture the original Godzilla film. Not as a "cool giant monster in epic fights with other monsters" but as the embodiment of nuclear war and the devastation it wrought.

the first time I watched Shin Godzilla I didn't like it. It was nothing like the Godzilla that I knew and liked (and I know quite a few basically growing up with the old Godzilla movies). But then I watched a video giving me a bit of info about how it is a new iteration basically of what the Godzilla '54 movie was about and also criticism of the japanese government structure etc and when I re-watched it, it grew more and more onto me. Now it might be one of my favourite Godzilla movies actually. Also the evolution of Godzilla in this movie is so well done. The body is reacting to new situations so that the second time a similar situation arises, it won't be caught offguard again.
The continued growing of the shock of Godzilla's Second attack where he uses his Atomic Ray was exactly what I was expecting from the reaction. XD
Shin Godzilla serves as a metaphor of the events that occured in Japan on
3 / 11. The earthquake, the tsunami and then Fukushima. And it highlights the bureaucracy that surrounded those events, which, in this case was Shin Godzilla.
This movie offered a unique take on godzilla of which I fully embraced, my only qualm was the America issue and how that really wasn't needed.

Something I noticed and really enjoyed was that many of your questions regarding the government and their actions/inaction in the film were very likely the very same (or at least very similar to) questions asked by citizens during the events which inspired the movie. "What are you doing? What will you do? What's going to happen? What do we do? Make a decision already damnit! Help us!"
Also, your comment near the end about how Godzilla was "clearly suffering" wasn't just accurate during the rapid freezing, but rather throughout it's entire existence as "Godzilla". From my understanding, Godzilla in this film is not just wandering around destroying things because it's "bad" , "evil", or because he enjoys it. He's just a creature it pain wandering around trying to find ways to easy the pain. He want desperately for the pain that's befallen him at the hands of careless and destructive humans (even if he might not know them to be guilty) to cease. *He wants to die.* _"Who Will Know"_ , the hauntingly beautiful operatic song that plays when it first uses the atomic breath is a very, _very_ good depiction of exactly how Godzilla feels. Unfortunately for him and all those in Tokyo, his body won't allow him to. Unconsciously, his body continues to rapidly grow, adapt, and evolve to keep itself alive through all the pain and suffering.
~When he struggles to breath on land and bleeds from it's gills, it evolves until eventually it can do so without harming itself.
~When it struggles to maneuver on land, it tries to stand on it's hind legs. When it falls, it strengthens it's hind legs, back, and neck, extends it's tail, and gives it slightly better arms.
~When it returns to Tokyo, he's taller with more sturdy skin and smaller, more easily protected eyes. When it's struck by the barrage of bullets and tank shells, it develops a protective layer for his eyes that it can open and close at will, just before the dropped bombs impact and explode.
~When attacked from above by the stealth bombers, a threat it couldn't detect well, it developed the atomic breath for range/firepower and the back attack for wider range, indiscriminate defense from above threats.
~When that evolution doesn't stop the attacks from the trains and it starts running out of juice during the last fight, it develops a more accurate version from his tail to conserve power and give it more control.
~And finally, the real kicker, once it seems to realize that it's the humans causing all this damage to it and that it's current means of defense were not enough, it starts reproducing. It begins to produce mini Godzilla creatures. But not mini versions of Godzilla as he currently was, rather it created smaller, more human-like creatures that could hopefully combat the now biggest threat it had faced at a level he was unable to effectively fight.
Fun fact: the music that plays during godzillas destruction of Tokyo is sung from his perspective. It talks of being in constant pain and fear, and not wanting to retaliate but doing so to protect itself

If I remember the first godzilla movie represented the fear of the time. The first was nuclear power. I heard this was the government being unable to respond to a crisis. We saw it in the first seen. Following meeting protocol. Changeing to different meeting protocol. While that happening Godzilla is just destroying areas just from moving.

I got curious for more info on Shin Godzilla. The "From Kaiju to Eldritch" detail wasn't what I was expecting.

If I heard about a Kaiju sized monster even just 10 cities away from where I live, I'd make sure all evacuation stuff is READY. All my stuff I'd have ready in case and have my suitcases WIDE open in case the military couldn't take it down.

Keep practicing subtitle reading. It gets to a point where you forget you are reading subs. Also, sub-timing can have an impact. Shin Godzilla's subs kind of hit the sweet spot not too fast and not too slow to have overlapping dialogue.

Not the best cgi but this is so good at displaying how horror the situation is.
Usually monster movie in the west what viewers feels is cool and how gorgeous the picture is, but failed to convey how horror, devastating, and serious the situation actually is.
You should watch "Shin Ultraman" (2022) and "Shin Masked Rider" (2023).
The motivation is evolution because his instinct want him to suffer and evolve to a better more higher life form

I saw the concept art for the the shin godzilla sequel of godzilla as a god that looked absolutely terrifying. But the studio said it was to large a departure.

I interpreted the ending shot to be showing that Godzilla is still evolving. It kept getting stronger throughout the movie to resist the more powerful weapons being used against it. Once the government finally got its act together and started cooperating, Godzilla evolved a final time: multiple new creatures growing from its body- a direct reaction to the multiple humans who were able to take it down.
5:41 This scene reminded us Japanese tsunami in 2011. We saw same scene on TV over and over at the time. Spine-chilling.
Shin godzilla could eventually evolved so much it could had been a god, as there wasn’t something hinted in the movie that stopped him from evolving, only thing they did was find its weakness

The story of a immortal creature in unimaginable pain wanting to die, but his body tells him to keep on going to keep pushing so that the pain will go away. Now he is just waiting for humans to get together and kill him so that his pain will go away. An immortal monster who wants to die but can't.

After a few viewings of this movie, I have come to a theory regarding Godzilla's origins. It seems no one thinks about the beginning before Godzilla is shown. The boat that the scientist owned is found abandoned right where Godzilla becomes its first evolution. Does this mean anything? Perhaps, did the scientist commit suicide for the turmoil Japan put his wife through? And if so, what happened to him? We don't ever really get any information as to where he was and if indeed he did throw himself off the boat.
My theory is that he might not have even committed suicide. Maybe he dived overboard and swam down into the bay and possibly the radiation contained in that area made him merge with fish and other sealife which became the start of Godzilla...? Going over the movie quite a few times, I have never heard any explanation as to why the boat was abandoned and where the scientist is. It's implied that he committed suicide.
Shins second form just... mindlessley pushing over buildings is just nightmarish..
Its dead fish eyes and constant bleeding just add to its Zombie like feeling..
I know most fans hate the 98 Godzilla, I personally love it. But that Godzilla’s, or Zilla, ability to reproduce is such an extreme threat to humanity. The ending shot of those human like mutations is more than likely right up there in threat level with Zilla. Especially if they are gonna keep mutating themselves. A sequel to Shin G would be awesome but it doesn’t seem like we are getting one.
I also love 98 Godzilla and I will defend every Godzilla movie. I personally think shin Godzilla is better without a sequel, as it’s perfect where it left off (at least in my opinion)
The last shot shows that this Godzilla was still evolving. In this case into the most dangerous creature on the planet... humanoids.
