The story of NFS is practically the story of the rise and fall of arcade racing as a whole. The early sim like starts in the '90s, the '00s explosion of style and perfected gameplay, the '10s massive drop in quality and dumbing down gameplay for mass appeal. Its a shame it had to be this way.
Yep seems like there was more innovation and style in NFS games back in 90s and 2000s it's sad the series went downhill from 2008 since the launch of undercover
Your last paragraph. Dumbing down gameplay to appeal to the masses. That's exactly the problem. In my opinion, that doesn't work. A game that chases the masses will hardly captivate anyone for long in the end. That's why many games these days are often boring and replaceable after a few hours.
I know this is a very long video and I don't expect everyone to watch the entire thing in one go (which is probably for the best) but I hope this series was enjoyable and thank you for supporting this channel ❤️ -Also instead of Goofy PSP ports it's Goofy Wii Ports, my mistake there
When it comes to racing games NFS will always hold a special place in my heart, it was the series that helped me a lot during my troubled childhood. Porsche unleashed was my first NFS title and I owe that game a lot because it made me who I am today. The graphics, the presentation, the music, the handling and the overall feel of the game is just amazing. So much passion was put into that game and it was this game that made me such an avid Porsche fan till today. Great video as always Dove, I do like seeing these hour long videos because they're always interesting to me.
i’ve gotta say the psp port for undercover was legendary. that’s the one i would constantly play as a child (apart from most wanted on the ps2) and it was so enjoyable. then i tried it some years ago on the pc. i was so disappointed with it, i couldn’t believe it was even the same game.
Always love how the history of need for speed - can show to us more than just racing , its a feeling of drive and undercontroll a perfect cars, with also feeling of fun and challenging (especially challenge series i prefer) 😮❤
DLC for ProStreet also introduced a gamebraking bug on the Tokyo speedway day events, where it can restart your whole campaing if you do those and then save on one of the upper events on Nevada. I saw it, i reproduce it, and i cried a lot with them... You don't lose your cars or anything, but resets your entire carreer, back yo Battle Machine.
This was by far your best essay video yet mah man! I really enjoyed watching this in the time of waiting for whatever NFS has to offer next! Big props to you, Kuru, Eden, and your editors on this one, you definitely captured the essence of how good these games used to be, absolutely amazing AND entertaining to play at the same time. You truly deserve my appreciation for covering the PS2 era especially, my childhood era, and my most memorable. Nice job 👏 ❤
I played NFS for the first time when i was 4yo (hot pursuit 2) and i absolutely fell in love for it, after that i played UG1 and 2 and fell in love even more!! NFS still the best Racing games franchise for me.
Love your vids my friend! Plus im kinda used already to long vids thx to both Eden and Kuru so i dont mind longer vids. Its real interesting to look back at how NFS started as a humble racing game with style in the 90s, evolved into a household name in the early 2000s but started to see a drop in the late 2000s, and the downgrade and tiny improvement in the 2010s. Keep up the awesome work, Dove!
Really enjoyed this tbh, was interesting to see nfs from the roots up. I am probably going to buy a few of these games now. NFS underground 1 and 2 was a big part of my teenage life. So thanks for the memories. Keep up the good work.
Undercover was one of my favorites, but definitely could've used more time to develop. My gripes with it, is no music in freeroam. Rims could've been categorized. Pursuit cooldown filled instantly after some time being chased. It's a good game but not perfect. Best things about it was the Soundtrack, Story, and the Garage strangely. The atmosphere and soundtrack were mysterious. The garage looked amazing paired with the music that plays
I remember playing Undercover on an era appropriate budget laptop, and thinking the game was fine. Like it was just more MW/Carbon which is really all I wanted / expected. Never had any bugs that felt out of the ordinary or anything, it was just a game that did everything it had to do to be a game.
Very entertaining and fun to watch video! I suppose there wont be any succesful game since EA barely interests in IP, making games that everyone acknowledges and completely forgets about the moment they are realesed. Also, it kinda goes tie-in with Fast and Furious franchaise, who goes on much higher and crazier levels with each movie, instead of sticking to things that made it succesful and loved, or in case of NFS, early Blackbox era. No hate to EA, just sadness that they let me lose the need for speed i once had.
I'm sorry but if a guy like Eden can't understand that people who have a mastery in certain race types don't need to have a top tier car... complaining about how the boss has a GTO and their crew member has a Pagani is baffling 💀 wouldn't the king /queen choose the car best for them?
to be fair, why would you bring a GTO when your opponent has already reached the point where they can easily get their hands on a hyper car... in a speed competition... fighting for your title as the speed king...
11:30 They reused this one in Mass Effect 2, in the Afterlife nightclub on Omega. Also, 1:34:35 If a Dodge Charger was to try to keep with an M3 GTR, or in my case, a 1200 HP Aventador, the chase wouldn't last longer than a second.
A fair assessment of Unbound that isn't a stupid rant? I'll leave a like just for that. And yeah the drifting is more difficult than before. But with a bit of throttle control and patience with the steering, it can look awesome.
I love the feature in high stakes betting your car. Imagine if this feature was in modern games. Bet your car if you lose the guy gets in on his profile. They really should do that in the next NFS.
Dang, my first game was hot pursuit 2 on the ps2, but seeing those screenshots of NFS world brought back some locked memories. Wish I had my old laptop from back then, it would've had similar screenshots in the stadium.
The cars with the raised rear-ends in Nfs Nitro remind me of the truck culture here in Brazil. Just search for "[Truck name] arqueado", or "[Truck name] qualificado". I suggest looking up the Mercedes 1620 (because it's my favourite lol). "Why do people do this?" You may ask. Well, some drivers say it helps with cornering (it doesn't), some say it looks cooler (depending on the angle, it kinda looks imo), but the most probable reason for its existence is because people used to put illegal amounts of whatever they were carrying in the truck, and the extra lifted rear made the truck look normal with the extra weight. Plus, it is dangerous af not just because you raise the center of gravity, but because if a car, for example, hits one of these raised trucks from the back, it goes under the truck. Btw, not only is this illegal, but even other drivers discourage this.
When porsche unleashed came out Texaco gas stations sold demo disks that came with a diecast Texaco Nascar there where several different demo disks each with a different car it was really good I had a couple of the demo disks as a kid I still have a 1 or 2 of the diecast cars that came with the demos
Some stuff related to 90s NFS that i wanted to add: When you mentioned you couldnt win any track, on Rusty Springs the car pick was right, the Supra is the only that can take the last turn at full speed, you just need to drop down from 160 to 140, then downshift to 5th and you can take the turn without major speed losses. I would have added to the TNFS retrospective that the PC version is faster and the menus are optimized for a keyboard and mouse usage while the Saturn and PS1 are thought for controller usage (duh) The PS1 lightning is better on that console and the polygon count is higher Saturn runs better but it uses triangles instead of polygons and the lightning is worse, but it doesnt wobble as much as PS1. Over-Drivin' GT-R and Skyline Memorial, while the same game, got different car lists. This is the first time NFS ever featured the R33 and 300ZX 3DO, PC, Saturn and PS1 all weight the same (roughly around 320 or 520mb) but all Xman videos on 3DO got replaced by more car slides and voiceovers, matching the file size. You forgot to mention that NFS2 was the first NFS game to introduce B2D High Stakes was literally NFS 3 super updated that EA decided "yeah, this looks like a different game, lets ship it with an entirely different title" Also PC Porsche Unleashed DOES use PS1 High Stakes as a base, they made the game over that version. The FD Porsches can be used in events where its open to every car, such as the European Rally Event, where you could even race a 911 GT1 against 356s and 550 Spyders...also this version is the second and last ever simulation NFS game Overall nicely done on that part
The NFS High Stakes from the PS1 era had a gimmick to it, if you played High Stakes with only one Memory Card you could DNF player 2 and switch the cards and instead of losing the car, you could duplicate it, I did that with the SLK 230 and Z4 so I could get early upgrades... Still worth it, doesn't count as a code, just a happy accident lol
1:10:26 i did After playing through the entire game More than 10 times And liking it Because this was my first ever racing game and i was a dumb kid back then

Neeed for Speed had better and worse titles over the years, but looking back its remarkable how many times this series has changed directions with its overhaul concepts, styles and features.
You should really cover the DS port of NFS Nitro. I feel like it's a much better game than the wii version, not to mention if you 100% the campaign you get sent to a secret moon level that had the internet scratch their brains for years. I was very confused by this because I distinctly remember there being a moon level and for some reason it used to be a mystery when I clearly saw it.
The Corsa was in all European versions, it had Vauxhall badges all over Europe as well, but if you played the game in a language other than English the menus would call it an Opel.
Tiny oddity that may or may not affect viewing experience, but you kept mentioning HP1 as HP3 when there wasn't a HP3. I'd assume you meant "Hot Pursuit" instead but idk Also you should try the dinky ass mobile ports, i have HP Mobile, No Limits and HP2012 -which i feel is better than the actual 2012 because the cars have identities and personality in their paint jobs (yes they have ACTUAL CUSTOM PAINTS. IN A MOBILE PORT. IN *2012*)
Say what you want about undercover, but it helped me get through a tough time. I spent some time getting into police chases and causing carnage after my dog got put down mistakenly
I feel so lucky to have gotten my first PC right when Underground came out, of course UG2, MostWanted and ProStreet followed, and these game still live on my SSD till this day and get replayed regulary. First NfS I didnt buy was Carbon, didnt like the style, after that I wasnt interested in the new titles that much. Back then NfS was all the rage and I didnt have a console, only today thru modern emulation and a broader horizon I play these other gems from others series ( FM4, FH1, FH3, PGR4, PC2, AM2, MNC:LA, DriverSF and so on). Recently I actively tried to like " modern" NfS, I got HP2010 which is OK, and I got Heat because its the better Unbound. But like many modern games Heat on side pretty broken ( Unite mod is mandatory for gameplay and looks, options are non existant, bad PC port) and on the other hand it forces to install EA Desktop because even for Solo play it needs internet all the time...
1:32:45 all you complains about nfs rivals was lies bruh. always online ? bruh what i played the game offline without any problems. you saying that the cars are easy to get damaged why dont you just upgrade the cars ma man.and 30fps lock isn't that big of deal as long as you know how to drive and have skill to drive. nfs rivals is in my top 5 in the nfs series that game is so.much fun. i dont know about you guys i enjoyed that game a lot.
he didn't know the fact that he can play rivals offline a while ago and missed the fact that both Rivals and NFS 2015 are unpausable, so just excuse him for that matter.
I always felt nfs 3 wasn't an improvement to nfs2se - especially on PC it felt worse in graphics and content. in many ways it looked unfinished to me for example the hud design with its generic font.
NEED FOR SPEED I've been a loyal fan since day one. I assure you it has changed since The Run. Flop after Flop after Flop after Flop to recent Unbound Big Flop. I have not played NFS since The Run. Mostwanted was scary but I've played it and enjoyed the Chase of cop's. Hot pursuit 2 was exhilarating, fantastic , Cop crashing fun. Underground was straight out of Fast and the Furious action fun only wish cop chase was added. Rivals nahhhh, Payback garbage, Heat garbage, Unbound Legendary Garbage!!!!! 2015 Reboot is the cause of all this trash NFS becoming Garbage........Ea stop making online multiplayer racing games and Actually go back to the Original Formula that made NFS what it was offline 2 player game with exotic locations and cars . Remake of Highstakes would be instant 15 million dollar paycheck.
the run actually is pretty good man, the only problem it has is it doesn't have free roam and after you finish game, you only have to complete challenges that they were not enjoyable for me for me last good nfs was rivals and last great nfs was hp 2010 / the run
This video is just Haterade for anything 2007+. The first half was great and legitimately informative but it quickly devolves from fact into opinion after that. Words like "terrible" and "boring" are purely subjective. Your 2015 section clearly exemplifies this lack of objectivity. Legitimately unsubscribing
the word "terrible" is not exactly that subjective, and you're just taking his own opinions very seriously. I also kinda dislike nfs 2015 too and I respect his opinions, I've gotten used to the game bcuz I had a cd case for ps4. also damn.

I always felt nfs 3 wasn't an improvement to nfs2se - especially on PC it felt worse in graphics and content. in many ways it looked unfinished to me for example the hud design with its generic font.
Nostalgia blind,NFS 2 looked terrible to 3 in comparison. NFS 3 brought back cops and the ability to play as one. Only downside is the car list.
@@MidnightApex-ml6jc I never thought cops were a good addition in the first place. esp. when their ai was this simple.
@@AliErfurt PS1 has very op cops
Ps1 High Stakes is Beta Porsche Unleashed PC.
not even mentioning 2015's tacky and cringe storyline is brutal xD
i really don't get this criticism, cringe is a big part of NFS storylines, it's not unique to 2015
I don't know what to say but I am 3rd
NEED FOR SPEED
I've been a loyal fan since day one.
Remake of Highstakes would be instant 15 million dollar paycheck.
the run actually is pretty good man, the only problem it has is it doesn't have free roam and after you finish game, you only have to complete challenges that they were not enjoyable for me
for me last good nfs was rivals
and last great nfs was hp 2010 / the run
This video is just Haterade for anything 2007+. The first half was great and legitimately informative but it quickly devolves from fact into opinion after that. Words like "terrible" and "boring" are purely subjective. Your 2015 section clearly exemplifies this lack of objectivity. Legitimately unsubscribing
Damn.
Damn.
the word "terrible" is not exactly that subjective, and you're just taking his own opinions very seriously. I also kinda dislike nfs 2015 too and I respect his opinions, I've gotten used to the game bcuz I had a cd case for ps4.
also damn.
1:31:00 and this is where i stop watching. Misinformation isnt cool man.
He is right bud don't get butthurt
@@North-101-Racing I didn't actually stop watching here. And he isn't right. But no one in this community bothers to fact check and blindly believe common rumors
bruh, he is definitely right on this game. you can't pause the game both in online and offline mode, just take this straight fact man
@@UndercoverBoy833YT he said it's online only which is completely different from what you just said
@@not_kjb i mean dove didn't knew that Rivals can be played offline, so I have nothing else to say man.
This trash TH-camr really trash talked a classic game need for speed underground 2
Yes cause the game isnt perfect and everyone has their own opinions
