    That cuddle party was fucking bizarre.
    Edit: Karl excusing himself from the cuddle party was comedy gold. “I’ll have to get going you know, cause of the traffic”..
    The lady is like “wait what are you talking about? There’s no traffic, it’s an empty road for like 2000 miles”…
    Cuts to Karl driving off & honking his horn 😂😂😂😂

    The Preston Bypass was the first section of road that was built to motorway specs opened in the UK but it wasn’t designed as the M6 until it was hooked up to the cross country motorway that was later built and designated the M6.
    The M1 was the first designated motorway built in the post war years, and because other long motorways were being constructed at the time, it was the first proper long motorway, so it was called the M1.

    Pinball Wizard is a great song by The Who, a legendary band, just for anyone who hasnt heard of it. The "deaf, dumb and blind", I assume dumb is referring to the older meaning of being mute rather than the newer meaning of being unintelligent.

    If I recall, Route 66 was very important and it essentially had towns that were built up and prospered around it. Then they set up highways and different routes directing around those towns, and in doing so destroyed the livelihoods and industry of many of those towns, as noone was passing through. So theres a lot of old fashioned "sleepy towns" on the original Route 66. So I guess thats part of the experience and charm

      @@scipioafricanus5871 well it was a very long connecting road but that long travel meant lots of small towns were set up along the road that the travellers used and they prospered for it being the only route to go on travelling that distance by car. Billy Connolly and The Hairy Bikers both have Route 66 shows in which they discuss about it and visit some of the small towns to talk with locals aswell as passing through the now ghost towns

    • @laudanum669
      @laudanum669 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wildwine6400 The Billy Connolly documentary of his trip on Route 66 is great. He really took the time to stop and see all the odd attractions and talk to the people who lived in the little towns.

  • @bluesrocker91
    @bluesrocker91 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The big appeal of Route 66 is that it's a way to experience the so-called "real" America, or at least it was... Lots of small towns sprang up along it, relatively untouched by the major corporations. So you got lots of unique restaurants, motels, attractions and stores, a lot of it family owned businesses, lot's of cool architecture, a bit like stepping back in time to the 1950s.
    That coupled with some pretty spectacular scenery that's been the backdrop to a lot of classic movies. Plus of course there's the song Route 66, made famous by Chuck Berry and later covered b The Rolling Stones. Billy Connolly did a great documentary series on it, following it all the way from Chicago to L.A.

    Fantastic episode overall, made even better by your reaction to it. I was laughing along with you.
    And the irony that the small car Karl was driving is called a 'Smart' car. :)
    I'd love to do Route 66. I'll have to stick to the M1 for now but I've driven that enough times now and it's boring :)

      @raifthemad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CMDRRustyDog I have jumped off an airplane several times, I would never do a bungee. My vertigo would never let me get onto that platform. While flying you don't really get that feeling of falling, that knot in the stomach, that you get with bungee. There isn't that sudden acceleration of a free fall. You're going at a steady speed, just changing direction. The worst part about sky diving, was getting myself to step out of the airplane into nothingness. Once I was out, there was no feeling of falling, just hovering.

  • @jasongoodacre
    @jasongoodacre ปีที่แล้ว +8

    In the UK, the motorways got their designation when they were finished. So the M6 was completed after the M1 but part of it was open earlier. These were called by-passes. They take traffic around the town. So multiple by-passes can be joined up to form a motorway network linking cities and taking traffic off local routes.

    • @alan-
      @alan- ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They get their designation (the number) by the direction they radiate out of [mostly london]. As do the A road and B road designations.

    • @jasongoodacre
      @jasongoodacre ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously you've got to be careful with comments on TH-cam cause there will always be know-it-alls to correct you. I didn't mean when they were finished I meant their importance. M1 is obviously significantly more important than the M62. If you wanted to be really pedantic you could say the Preston by-pass wasn't a motorway at all since it didn't take you anywhere. The M1 was the first FULL motorway opening in 1959, so I guess time is a factor.

    • @jasongoodacre
      @jasongoodacre ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonrobbins8357 There's many reasons for the numbering system. Your argument is simply conjecture. The important routes in the UK motorway network have lower numbers. The fact is M1, M3 ad M4 are all routes into London. Then the M5 and M6 link up the west of the country. So, yes, I do place those higher up due to importance. BTW, I'm the biggest smart arse on TH-cam so don't even try to compete 😁

    I think the romantic idea of Route 66 stems from the Nat 'King' Cole song that's been covered by everyone, "Get your kicks on Route 66..." That odd Velociraptor thing Karl was doing with the Glee kids...
    His vehicle was a Smart Car, a three cylinder, rear engined city car. Helen Keller, didn't she bend spoons?

    I think the Route 66 thing is partly just a kind of epic road trip thing, and partly because of the iconic movie Easy Rider which was filmed along stretches of it. Sometimes, things just develop a kind of cultural mystique, until you look behind the veil and it's just a road 😁

    You mentioned your 10 favourite (or favorite as an American would say) people at the start. I've watched your videos for a while now so based on what you have said in the past, I've imagined who else might be on the list.
    1. Karl Pilkington
    2. Mum (or Mom as an American would say)
    3. Dad (or Pop as an American would say)
    4. Jesus Christ/Jehovah
    5. Charlie Costa
    6. Bob Mortimer
    7. Brother 1

    10. The Donald.

    Point of contention: Route 66 (the old one) came up through Missouri, caught I-55 in St. Louis and went all the way up to Chicago, spilling out onto Lake Shore Drive (official end/start). It did NOT, however, go through ANY PART OF INDIANA!

    • @iambecomepaul
      @iambecomepaul ปีที่แล้ว

      Oddly enough, going UP I-55 you’d go through Springfield, Illinois. One hour to the east is an Amish community in Arcola, IL. Wouldn’t EVEN have to go into Indiana.

    'Desperate Dan' is a cowboy character in a classic British comic book and the 'Deaf Dumb & Blind Kid' are lyrics from a famous rock song by the band 'The Who' called 'Pinball Wizard' the 'Dumb' meaning he didn't speak but despite all that he was great at playing Pinball

    • @oli3437
      @oli3437 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @blackie75
    @blackie75 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure the fact that the boy in Pinball Wizard couldn't speak was simply an artistic choice for the character that fit the film. Pete Townshend wrote it and he's considered quite the intellectual so I don't think there's any way on earth that he wrote the character as deaf and mute because he didn't understand that the the two aren't necessarily correlated.
    I would add that many people in the not too distant past chose not to speak because of the negative or unwanted attention atypical voices sometimes attract, so this could have been the reason for the choice as dumbness/muteness doesn't necessarily imply a physiological connection.

    Another great ending, but for a very different reason to the last one.😅
    He was complaining about Route 66. At least there is interesting stuff to see along the way. There's a region here between South Australia and Western Australia called the Nullarbor Plain, and oh boy is it plain🙁. It's over 1000km of flat nothing, not even trees (hence the name Null - 'no,' and Arbor - 'tree'. It's such a long, boring drive that if you tell someone you're travelling across the Nullarbor, they'll respond with a groan and then offer their condolences.😂
    Give me Route 66 any day.

    If you can find a way to separate the audio streams e.g. with OBS - then you can raise or lower the volume in post for each stream and try to make it so the audio only peaks to the orange zone in the volume mixer. Using a compressor plugin in OBS will manage any peaking audio too so it never goes too high. A normalizer will ensure the volume of everything is fairly equal and nothing is too quiet or too loud in the video.
