Being from near to where Karls from, the potato cake Karl talks about is- mashed potato, mixed with flour and an egg for binding, then formed into a patty and fried. Then you spread butter on them. Extremely common in the North West of England, Karl would just be having the premade ones from a supermarket or some bakeries. Ireland have them to but they are called potato farls.
I've seen that monk on a few other travel shows. Theres 2 popular British celebrity chefs called "The Hairy Bikers", they visit him whilst in Japan and cook a meal for him on one of their shows. Hairy Bikers Asian Adventure Episode 5 for anyone curious. He talks about how he became a monk to.
Thanks for sharing the story of Argentinian mate from the "before times". 😁 (Quickly Googles "Mate" & hoping he spells it correctly) I learned something today! Thank you Mandy!
When i was younger and the Honda car plant opened here in England i worked there. We were paid a good extra bonus if we turned up 15 minutes early for our shift each day and took part in a mass exercise class like Karl did. It really is a thing in Japanese culture. Great vid, thanks Mandy!
I saw a vid where workers on a construction site in Japan were given 10 mins at the start of the day (after exercises) to quietly reflect on how important it was to their families that they didn't get an injury at work.
My favourite part of this one? When you said "C'mon! 'Ave a joomp!" in a perfect Manc accent! 😆😆Made my day! And also I love that you know references now to British stuff like Vic & Bob! I've loved your reactions to this series so much (as if you couldn't already tell lol) -- make sure you check out the coming home episode before starting season three! It's awesome :) Also glad to see you feeling better! Have a great week!
Just to let mandy know most roofs in Ireland and UK would have slate tills on them and the workers have hard hats on because they are working on a building site
I only just heard about Maté, it’s interesting to see cultural differences. I’ve since found out that we call it “Yerba Mate”. (They sell it in Holland & Barrett for my fellow Brits)
Fruit ferments into alcohol. Fish ferments into FORMALDEHYDE (which we use to preserve corpses). This is not a dish you just spring on an unsuspecting mouth or nose. Obligating Karl to the expensive honor of choking down fermented fish is one of Ricky's cruelest pranks.
I was introduced to Yerba mate about 17 years ago because my brother's wife is from Argentina. When he went over there to visit her family, he'd bring packs of it back. When I started work in a new office, I sat there drinking it from my Gourd with the metal straw, and everyone in the office thought it was like some kind of weird drug contraption.
The proper name for the sumo "nappy" is a mawashi. They are lucky they probably couldn't understand him as calling it a nappy is probably offensive. Itd be like calling a kilt a skirt 😅
In Japan most companies start out with exercise at the start of a shift. Also in Japan at the time when workers were upset with management they worked "harder". It fills the warehouse with inventory and makes a huge supply chain headache for the managers. It is a worse mess for the company than the workers slowing down or doing nothing!
52:05 Anyone else: would've gone into some anecdotal idea of you can travel as much as you want, see as much as you can, but there's always going to be a place you can go and just be there.... Karl: You're never going to eat all the biscuits in the world. Fabulous. Nice one Mandy 👍 ("I'm out." from Ricky was a Dragon's Den reference, and wait for the Karl Comes Home episode 😉)
Ricky could propose to book Karl a seat on the next spaceship to land on The Moon and Karl's only question would be am I able to bring something home for Suzanne.
Fun fact: Tipping in Japan doesn't exist! Customer Service is expected to be so high that it would be rude to tip as they feel like you're judging their service :D *There's places where you buy fake money to tip with to get around the tipping no-no.* That man was likely just being polite waiting there in case he needed something. And people ignored him because very few people are confident in English, and talking to strangers isn't common, even among Japanese. The morning exercise is called Radio Taisho - they play an exercise routine over the radio to encourage good health in workers, the hardhat wearers are likely construction site workers! :P Love these vid's Mandy! And your Argentina culture stories :P Can't wait for season 3!!!!!! :D
13:40 I've done that before! I'm Australian, and we don't have tipping culture here. Occasionally someone will try to tip you if they feel you've gone above and beyond your service, but most people here will refuse to accept the tip. Anyway, I was halfway through my India trip before I found out they tip there as an everyday custom. I tipped from then on, but before I was told about that, I was wondering why all the hotel staff always stood at my door, smiling awkwardly for way too long 😅 I kept saying thank you over and over until they left! 🤦♂️
I love how Karl moaned about a hypothetical situation where he tells builders to do star-jumps before they come to do work for him, whilst being a part of the builders team that were doing just that - exercising before their shift. Only Karl. In relation to the guy at the hotel, I think tipping in Japan is considered an insult, but I may be wrong. And of the potato cake, in Scotland you get a 'tatty scone'. Goes well with a fry-up. Ooft, mmmm.
Potato cake is lovely Mandy, I cook it all the time, you normally have it with breakfast, my mother's Irish and fathers Scottish, its called potato cake in Ireland and, tatty scones or if you like potato scones in Scotland, a bit of useless information for ya 😊
Slate is what you put on your roof. Usually I can’t remember what material it is but they used to use lead quite a lot back in the days kiss or at least that’s the sealant, but it’s like the brick sort of things that aren’t bricks that you put on your roof in houses in England. Well nowadays, they use some cheap tacky bullshit, but you used to have proper roof slates. No roof tiles or anything like that slates of proper lead. I’m sure it is let that they used, but that was back when Britain was running the world and we had a lot more money than we do now. Now we build our house is very very cheap and poorly lol
The whole episode was a highlight like always but my absolute highlight was your reaction to Karl mentioning Bob lol. One of your favourite people mentioning another. That was great! 🤗
Slates are usually used as Roof Tiles. Here is How to make Potato Cakes with American measures. 2 cups mashed potatoes. 1 cup all-purpose flour. 1 onion, diced. 1 egg. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper. ½ teaspoon salt. ½ cup vegetable oil, or as needed. First Mix mashed potatoes, flour, onion, egg, black pepper, and salt in a bowl until well combined, similar to a batter consistency. Second Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Drop 4-inch circles of batter into the hot oil. Cook until golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes per side; drain on paper towels. Repeat with any remaining batter. Now you have Potato Cakes, good with a fry up. Real Machu Picchu Coffe tastes great. With the right measure it has a Chocolate taste. Good Reactions to a good Episode. 😂😊
23:57 This is not Karl being polite or embracing other cultures. This is Karl scrambling for excuses to avoid what Ricky and Steve have lovingly prepared for him.
13:50 In Japan, it's very rude or at least awkward to leave a tip. In fact, they don't accept it. They'll chase you in the street to give you your tip back. In Europe, most places don't expect you to leave a tip, unless you were served in a fancy place. It's the USA that has some kind of strange obsession with tips, most likely because they don't pay hospitality staff decent salaries.
A potato cake is basically mashed potato formed into a small disk, breaded then either fried or cooked in the oven. Similar to hash browns but a smoother texture.
It's so cool how immersed you are in British humour and then you shake your head to state your lack of hearing of Morecombe & Wise and Ant & Dec, two of the most famous comedy duos of all time! Not a criticism btw.
..slade, i think is to slide on snow.. like Santa-Klaus..smaller.. ..his invention, the pants, he will bring it when he meets Ricky and Steve..and try to sell them i think on tv advertising show..
He did make the Pilko Pump Pants, there is an informercial featuring Karl trying to flog them as well. And it's on YT too! I think you know what needs to happen.
My friend brought some mate to work and found it kind of relaxing. I made it like a tea, so probably got more diluted taste. Interesting to hear how how popular and cultural it is over there.
Slate are usually use as tiles for house roofs there not cheap to buy. Generally people use them because nothing grows on them. So you don't have clean roof😂.
This was great! Started by day off with this instead of waiting for the evening :) I was disappointed that when Karl was reeling off thse duo's like The Two Ronnies, Vic & Bob etc. that he didn't include Laurel & Hardy :( My fave comedy duo EVER. Anyway... I loved when Karl referred to his listing of tea as 'tea strories' and then you came up with an actual tea story that was very interesting. You should consider doing short videos telling us about life in Argentina. 🙂 I hope you get around to the final episode soon because it will not only answer your question about Karl's invention, but something happens in the episode that... well you won't want to miss it. Then Karl utters a line that makes Ricky (and Steve) explode with laughter. I can't wait for you to see it. Then Season 3, then The Moaning of Life, right? 🙂 Enjoy your potato cakes.
15:29 because the exercise is taking place on an active construction site and you have to wear a hard hat at all times. He is not waiting for a tip, tipping in Japan does not happen at all and would not be accepted by the person. I am sure there are likely exceptions but in general it is not.
Yeah, maybe he’s just really determined to stay still because he thinks that’s what he needs to do. Staying still is important, but you have to just be comfortable you can’t be tense
Potatocake, fried egg and baked beans with maybe a sausage or two. Add tomato sauce and thats a proper tea you get when ya mum calls you in from playing on your bike with others.
Club-Mate was popular briefly here with coders and techy people for a caffeine type buzz without a crash. I think its a German bastardization. I imagine its as sacrilegious to a Mate drinker as a can of Lipton sweet tea is to someone who just likes a proper Yorkshire tea.
Yeah, it’s 100% lead. Basically after World War II when we had to reconstruct everything everything was built properly because it was done by the council, so you get a lead roof is get all the ceiling. All of the materials used would’ve been high-quality, and as the quality of houses has slowly degraded people of stolen parts of the more expensive materials when they’re left laying around still so people might steal part of your roof. For example if its lead. Most houses these days don’t have that at all, and I only have a tiny bit of lead around them to seal out the water. I think the last time I saw a house that had proper slates like he’s talking about that are expensive as all hell was probably in the 90s. As people used to do exactly what carl and his dad, we’re doing and just steal peoples roofs etc. lmao
The hemorrhoid thing is not true 😅 its a myth that sitting on cold surfaces, such as concrete, cause it. More to do with overuse and straining of your bowel
Hey Mandy! I haven’t seen this episode :) 9:46 Had to look up the rules, but grabbing the belt is a legitimate move and quite common in sumo, you can’t grab below the belt tho 😆 12:22 Staying at YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Transit Hotel was a fun experience. Although it was not coffin size, it was very compact, the pulldown bed took up the entire room, and the only lighting in the room and the corridors was a deep purple colour 😃 38:20 you’re really selling the Yerba Mate to me 🤣 38:39 perhaps they get offended because you *also* tell them it’s disgusting! 🤣 I wonder if those bombillas work with a brew made from loose tealeaves here? I shall investigate! 44:09 Nobody’s gonna understand what I’m on about 😈 But it’s funny you should mention Sue Perkins and Taskmaster contestant Mel Giedroyc from Mel and Sue … 🤫 I have never looked down on a layer of clouds from land above, sounds mystical 🧙♂ Biscuits, there’s loads of em! 😊
If only Ricky had sent Karl to Argentina! Then I'd expect to listen in to the following phone call from Steve: "I think you'll be quite pleased with what I've sorted out for you. I've managed to arrange for you to try the national drink of Argentina, it's consumed as part of a unique ceremony. It brings people together."
The BRITs these days tea is about learning how each individual one of your friends likes it and serving it perfectly to their liking sound. The really is more in making multiple cups of tea at the same time, but having them all taste very different strengths and sugar levels and things like that based on how long people like their tea, brood how strong I like it how much milk they want, and how much sugar do I like how hot stay like it etc. It’s hard to nail, but once you know all your friends, you can pretty much both of the tea run in an office for example. Usually you will find one person who everybody loves to have make the coffee is in tears because they remember everybody’s preference. Never thought about how much refugees actually do bring people together. Carl is really really wise and shocking because he’s so not smart at the same time as being smart as fuck. Proper mystery that guy

Mate increases blood flow and is prized by males since it can improve male virility, as well as healing, brain function, etc.

Hey Mandy! I haven’t seen this episode :)
9:46 Had to look up the rules, but grabbing the belt is a legitimate move and quite common in sumo, you can’t grab below the belt tho 😆
12:22 Staying at YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Transit Hotel was a fun experience. Although it was not coffin size, it was very compact, the pulldown bed took up the entire room, and the only lighting in the room and the corridors was a deep purple colour 😃
38:20 you’re really selling the Yerba Mate to me 🤣 38:39 perhaps they get offended because you *also* tell them it’s disgusting! 🤣 I wonder if those bombillas work with a brew made from loose tealeaves here? I shall investigate!
44:09 Nobody’s gonna understand what I’m on about 😈 But it’s funny you should mention Sue Perkins and Taskmaster contestant Mel Giedroyc from Mel and Sue … 🤫
I have never looked down on a layer of clouds from land above, sounds mystical 🧙♂
Biscuits, there’s loads of em!
😊
My new mission in life is to try ALL the biscuits! 😅🤪
Hahahhahahaha! You never know, he might like it! 😅😅😅
glad you're feeling better!
you'll find out what happens with the Pilko Pants in Episode 8 'Karl comes Home'. You'll love it!
