The discussion on empathy......that was a little off. Empathy IS a level of compassion felt. Stmpathy is the comparison, not compassion. Empathy is real feeling, especially with first hand knowledge. Sympathy is more of a pity. Empathy can be very healthy and does not have to be without boundaries. The level of boundaries deoends on the emotional health of the person feeling the empathy.
