These F59PHI's were doing good for COASTER, its sad they have to retire. RIP coaster's F59PHI's fleet, 2001-2023. Thanks for making this video for us Mike, to see it one more time.
Another great video documenting these two remaining coaster classic engines Mike! I am going to MISS THEM just like when the F40s ruled coasters system! Another great video by you! wohooo! :)
My absolute favorite locomotive! I love classic streamlined look they have. They also carry such a unique horn! Thank you for documenting these amazing workhorses of the west coast commuter railroads throughout the years Mike! The F-59' will be very missed by all 😔. Amazing video as always!
The newer Coaster livery is very flattering on the SC-44s! Meanwhile, Amtrak's visual branding has only gotten worse since they debuted some pretty awful paint schemes on their own SC-44s...
@InventorZahran the coaster is one of my favorite train service it it and the new colors dose look amazing but amtrak colors are amazing including the Alc-42s and sc-44s
The F59PHIs were a big part of my childhood and I grew up seeing these locomotives on the regular. First it was Amtrak now coaster. I hope they’re sold off to a museum and I really don’t want them to be scrapped.
First Amtrak (2018 - 2019), then Metrolink (2020), and now Coaster (2024). May the F59PHI rest well. Edit: I was going on a trip to San Diego and when we passed the coaster yard, I managed to take a quick photo of the now retired F59PHI’s
@@NorcalValleyRailfan Seattle's Sounder, North Carolina's Piedmont, the West Coast Express in Western Canada, Montreal's Exo, and the Trinity Railway Express in Texas also still use them.
It’s always unfortunate to see locomotives leave, I do hope they aren’t scrapped and used for service elsewhere. Anyway great shots though out, another great one Mike!
I will missed these locomotives in San Diego But i could remember the F59phi when services in Amtrak, Coaster and metrolink, we are rememeber especially in San Juan Capistrano in 2013-14 or when they were speeding at the Encenitas station and I will never forget your K5LA horn, goodbye mate, thank you for these 20 years of service you have become a transportation icon in South California!
Hello Mike, an interesting video about the F59PHI diesel locomotive, with fantastic scenes of trains and the landscape. Thanks for showing it and best regards from Germany. Wolfgang
Going to be sad when the F59PHI's are retired from Sound Transit's Sounder service. Those locomotives were a constant for me when I was commuting from Tacoma to either Kent or Seattle.
As a Metrolink and Coaster rider for years, the PHIs of both railroads hold special space in my heart. As they get rolled out, I'm very sad to see them go, and hope some of these PHIs get saved by museums
The last of the F59PHI locomotives in service within Southern California's railroads is now. First, Amtrak retired the F59PHI's from the Pacific Surfliner service in 2018, in favor of the Siemens Charger SC-44's entering service. Amtrak F59PHI 458 was the final unit that was overhauled to Chicago IL via Amtrak's Southwest Chief train. All ex-Amtrak Surfliner F59PHI's are part of Chicago's commuter rail services Metra. Next, LA's commuter rail services Metrolink retired its F59PHI's in 2020, along with the F59PH locomotives, in favor of the EMD F125 locomotives entering Metrolink service. All retired Metrolink F59PH and F59PHI locomotives are currently sitting in the Keller storage yard in Los Angeles awaiting final disposition. Now, San Diego's commuter rail service Coaster is soon retiring its two F59PHI's, with new SC-44's joining Coaster's fleet. Coaster's original F40PHM-2C locomotives since 1995 have been retired since 2021. Two of its units 2103 and 2105 have been donated to railroad museums. I'm gonna miss the sound of the F59PHI's K5LA horns and EMD steel bells once Coaster retires them from service.
@@lacountytransitrailfan If that's the case, their roof-mounted K5LA horns will get removed, along with new Graham White electronic bells replacing their original EMD steel bells. Some of the Metrolink F59PHI's that still have the original periwinkle blue stripe and the corrugated sides from 1995 (874, 880, and 881) will finally get a fresh new look and logo. They would basically get rebuilt, just like the Metrolink's F59PHR locomotives 851, 852, 856, 861, 868, and 873.
Just like Coaster, the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) here im the Dallas Metroplex has purchased Chargers to replace their entire Locomotive fleet as well (F40s, F59PHIs, and F59s) It'll be sad to see thess old workhorses go, but also excited for new equipment.
As sad as I hate to admit where I’m from the Texas Trinity Railway Express is about to face changes as well as now time is starting to catch up with the aging fleet of F59PH and the two F59PHI locomotives even though they’ve acquired 2 F40PH locomotives from progress Rail it won’t be long until new charger locomotives come on the scene of North Central Texas as the cities of Dallas in Fort Worth have been given a grant to renew the transportation on the TRE bombard coaches are scheduled to be rebuilt and back in service the F40PH locomotives will continue to operate for 10 more years I am going to try to find every time possible to go out and capture them while they’re still in Servise
Those 2 served San Diego very well in their time I’ll say, but god damn in their last few years those things looked and sounded tried, their retirement is very much due
Hey Mike are you good at helping railroads preserve older locomotives to museums and tourist railroads after they are retired and withdrawn from service ? Because I’m hoping that Caltrain can preserve and sell most of their F40s to museum and tourist railroads and avoid the scrappers torch
These models are what made the Coaster look iconically unique compared to other commuter trains, truly going to miss them ❤
