Brilliant. Thanks. Very interesting. While we all know Buddy was an incredible talent. He is often discredited because of his temperament . His show biz life, lack of education , the Lana Turner story, his friendship with Gene all contribute to my personal view of him as being a very complex but amazing person.
Bart, I feel like I figured out that buddy rich and joe rogan aren’t so different around 45:00 - 50:00 😂 thanks for asking all of the personal questions were all kinda afraid to ask!
Bart, its a little hard to find but if you can, look for the book..."Mister, I Am The Band". Its written by Doug Meriweather and it provides a lot of detail on Buddy's life. The copyright on the book is 1998. Its published by N.A.R.D......National Drum Association. The reason its expensive is because the author did a tremendous job of providing a 250 page discography of everything that Buddy ever recorded with all his bands. As long as I'm at it,....because I just purchased these 3 books..... "Traps The Drum Wonder" was written by longtime close friend of Buddy, and singer Mel Thorme. Hudson Music also has "Buddy Rich, One Of A Kind". Its very good and complete also. Doug Meriweather wrote another book on Buddy's life entitled "We Don't Take Request"
Bart, I love all your episodes and I hope you can keep doing this forever but, on this episode, I also love anything Buddy,...here's what I don't get. Why wasn't Buddy playing drums in the Marine Corps band? A medical discharge?? I didn't see that coming. I'm curious as to how long he was in the military. The Veteran's Administration won't talk to you unless you have 3 yrs of active duty under your belt.
Thanks so much for listening. Those are all very good points and questions. His military career is definitely a bit of a grey area to me (without doing that much research) but i'd love to learn more
Great interview
Thank you Shawn Martin
Good job Shawn!

Haha my pleasure, thanks for watching!
Buddy's contract with Harry James was $1500.. when they were on the road and 800 per week when they stayed in Vegas.

That woulda meant Buddy would have to sight read massive amounts of music. He didn't read music!!
