    Most lifejackets drag you facedown, potentially drowning you in a very short amount of time. Not this one. This week we get a tour of the Team-O factory, checked out how our life jackets are made, and get Kika's jacket repacked.

    Captains - I must commend you on the constant state of "Ship Shape" you keep your vessel in, underway or at mooring. . . A signature of true seamanship.

    It's great for me to see that from team o.
    Several years ago a German sailor tried to invent a new lifejacket. One mayor issue was that stupid strap to drown the person. BUT - it was not granted to install it in another way - it should be there (at the belly) by some strange law. Together with some other struggle (... in certifying process) he finally dropped the project. The team o solution for me is a late tribute to his ideas.

    When I first read the name "Teamo", I thought it was in Spanish: "Te amo", which means "I love you". A rather curious name for a life jacket!

    I think the life-jackets are great. I think they should consider how to construct foul weather with these jackets built in. That way you only have to put on your foul weather jacket and your good to go. If a blow comes you don't have to run below and put your life jacket on over your foul weather gear.

    While you are kicking about the Solent, you should get over the the isle of wight. Head ba k towards Yarmouth and put the hook out in Newtown Creek. It's probably the most beautiful natural anchorage around the solent, however the pub is a dinghy ride away. If you are lucky enough you will see seals there at low tide on the old sea wall. Great to have seen you at Southampton Boat Show.

    30 years ago, Practical Sailor and others emphasized the fact that with any life jacket, you need to try it on in the water, and be sure it is adjusted to keep you face up. IIRC they also named two makers who built their vests to make this most likely.
    All the chest storage is certainly nice, but since shipping gas cylinders for servicing invokes expensive hazmat fees--that's simply not feasible. And instead of a hanging loop, a military style grab/drag handle makes it much easier to literally grab and lift a victim.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, most jackets will flip you around face up quite well IF you're not being toed. They will ALL tow you face down if attached with a tether. In the past it was recommended to instal a quick release to avoid being dragged face down and drowning. However, then you're detached from the boat and floating behind, in the dark, watching your boat sail away without you....not a situation we'd every like to be in.

      Sailing Uma what about setting up a system than, when you go overboard, it “kills the engine” like motorboats. Something that maybe loosens the sheets and makes it turn in a circle

    • @davids1716
      @davids1716 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@impersonalopinion
      Thirty+ years ago I met a couple who had sailed a Nicholson 32 all over the Americas, Caribbean even one TransAt.
      Their ‘safety’ system for the event of a watch-keeper going overboard unseen was a last chance disconnect pin in their wind vane self-steering rig. The pin was attached to a very light, low drag line (fishing gear, I guess) towing a small white fender about 200m behind the boat.
      That equates to, at boat speed five knots, ~ one minute in the water to catch the line and/or the fender and stop the boat.
      Because the white fender had a little black ‘nose’ where it was attached they called it their “Life Snoopy”

    Great to see the Teamo factory, I think Teamo should make the harness like you guys made with the double hook system I would definitely buy one ⛵️

    • @paanikki
      @paanikki 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, factory-made triple hook safety lines are available in all well equipped chandlery stores/webstores. Well known brands like Crewsaver, Spinlock and many others make those. The main thing is, they are pretty expensive, mostly because of the super-safe, super-expensive locking hooks. Some brands also have models with standard carabiner hooks.
      Most of our safety lines (both 2 hook and 3 hook ones) are made of 25mm (1") wide, UV-resistant tubular webbing, max strength 20kN(4500lbs), similar to what is used for rock climbing equipment. The clips are standard marine grade carabiners (stainless steel, ø8mm or ø10mm). They were sewn by a local shoemaker with his 50 years old, super heavy duty sewing machine and sail sewing thread.
      Personally I find using lines with standard hooks much more convenient than the ones with locking hooks. After a few tacks in a pitch black night, the bowdeck man sometimes finds himself/herself entangled in a spiderweb of safety line and genoa sheets, and has to be able to disconnect the safety line from the harness really fast.
      The difference between factory-made and self-made is not strength or durability (if done properly). It is the fact that factory-made ones usually have an indicator that "rips" under heavy load and shows when you need to replace the line. Factory-made safety lines also may have stitching made with a contrast colour thread, which makes it easier to monitor and notice the possible wear and tear.
      As for harnesses, you can use any safety line with any harness/lifejcket, and vice versa. regardless of the brand.

I know you guys have loads of plans, but if you can there is a good train ride to Bath and the canals between Bradford and Bath were for me, beautiful! Also the histories of that area! Also I had to laugh as I kept hearing Portsmith, not Portsmouth and it is early here and I kept typing it wrong and I lived in the UK for over 11 years! lolol Yet if I had limited time I still would go to The Royal Observatory Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College and The Cutty Sark, all next to each other. The Old Royal Naval College Museum is simple epic, or rather it was when I was last there! 17 years ago! Well whatever you do and whereever you go I think you will enjoy yourselves! The canals are worth having a look at Crusing the cut, but if I recall you guys did some longboating already in the UK, I am going to go back and have a look, but I think you did, if you didn't I am sorry for my getting that wrong!

    We have something here called the SeaStreak and it takes you to Manhattan and it goes so fast! You can get from Atlantic Highlands to Manhattan in 40 minutes!

      We actually hopped on the fast cat later and took it to Cowes. We thought we were going only 5-10kts (it was dark) we had to look at the phone and found out we were cruising at 35! Felt like we were standing still....pretty cool actually.

    Is there any ranking, for TH-cam. I guess the question I’m asking is is there a way for you to find out what place that you’re in as far as most watched sailing channels, I think you guys should definitely be tapped for at least if not two

    Portsmouth !! Was there back in 86' on a aircraft carrier. There was a tavern there called the Wheelbarrow because the officers were taken back to their ships in wheelbarrows.... Also you might want to see the old navy ship there. Donn't remember her name was a nice size sailing ship painted black and yellow.

    I agree with Kika. My worst sunburn was on a cloudy day...it was bad, as in, legs peeling, chest bubbling, drug needing sunburn... needless to say, I learned my lesson. On a side note, it's interesting to see how the sea is in different countries.

    Guys, I just noticed stg: do you not have a separate bimini top under the solar panels? Do you use the panels also to protect you from rain/sun? Are they enough to keep the rain away from the helm area at least? Btw! great that you introduces TeamO - it seems such a nice company - I am going the check if we need new life wests..:)

    Sailing with wind and no waves must be a treat for you guys. You should try sailing into your slips(and out of them) or at least up to docks. You can actually sail your boat backwards by backwinding the jib.

      We have before, on and off the dock. We sail on and off anchor and moorings pretty much every time and definitely get strange looks when we sail backward out of a tight anchorage. It's just a hard thing to film with just the two of us. A gopro on a clip never really does it justice.

    Do they make Doggie life jackets too? I have a friend with a Schiperkee (Danish Canal boat dog) who is famous for falling overboard EVERY time he gets on a boat (and he does NOT swim well). We have learned to clip him to the front bumper of the car (50 yards away from the pier) and put his life-jacket on him BEFORE we get CLOSE to the water!
