I know what you mean, for example, every time I finish DAO and it's DLCs, I get this feeling of sadness, like I'm sad the adventures are over with my Warden (for now); not a lot of games can give me that feeling, it just goes to show how great DAO is: it can make you sad that it's over!

100% agree. Lots of other RPGs are all good and evil but in DA2 pretty much every decision you made was bad for someone and the conflict between the mages and templars was extremely messy and both sides had great points. It was just so hard to support one side over another when you knew both sides and people on both sides. I'm rambling. My point is a lot of the major decisions were actually really lifelike. To me at least since it wasn't just good vs. evil

DA2 had a gore, macabre and sentimental story and this song just fits Hawke so much. S/he cared for all of the companions.
I’m not calling you a thief - Isabela
I’m not calling you a liar - Merrill / Anders
I’m not calling you a ghost - Fenris / Anders

    • @pixelapocrypha

      I interpret it as:
I'm not calling you a liar (just don't lie to me) - Varric
I'm not calling you a thief (Just don't steal from me) - Isabella
I'm not calling you a ghost (Stop haunting me) - I know she's not a party member but I honestly read this as about Hawke's mother because of her death haunting Hawke
I love you so much I'm gonna let you kill me - Anders (cause my Hawke lets him live and she has to flee her home because of it) ((Could also apply to Fenris if Hawke is a mage romancing him and siding with the mages))
Also these four had the biggest impact story wise versus the rest of the cast (as much as I love them don't get me wrong!)

Because of the lockdown I replayed the Dragon Age Trilogy.
All of them are good in my opinion, they all taste different but the depth of the characters stays excellent.
But I must say that Hawke has a special place in my heart because of him/her sad story. Even more when I met her in Inquisition where I saw her so depressed, disillusioned and sad. It was like she wanted to end her life after all theses events and I saw the trip to the Fade like if it was the moment when her story should end. A sort of suicidal last stand that should close her life book.
So listening again to this version of the song... damn feels.

Omg yes, so glad you pointed that out !
I’ve been replaying the game while waiting for DAV to come out, and I’ve always found there was something very compelling about the fact that, no matter what he/she does, no matter the choices he/she makes or no matter how hard he/she tries, Hawke ends up losing people he/she cares about the most and is eventually doomed to fail
That’s why Hawke will always be a very special character to me. My heart burst with joy when I saw her in DAI. And then sank when I realized how defeated she sounded 😅 especially Purple Hawke, there’s some kind of despair and so much tiredness behind the quips and irony, it’s heartbreaking. And that’s why I can’t bring myself to sacrifice her in the Fade. I want her to find some peace after all the hell she went through

Same. Hawke's story is really damn depressing when you think about it. They're alive but literally every time something good happens to them it is accompanied by something much worse. They finally get enough money to buy their family's estate back? Well, your remaining sibling is gone one way or another. They become champion of Kirkwall? Well, very nice but mom just got killed by a blood mage. And then, If it wasn't bad enough already, their friend/lover blows up the chantry and a bunch of people get slaughtered. It depends on what side you pick and stuff but depending on that they also have to flee Kirkwall. As if they didn't already spend their entire life running from Templars. No wonder Hawke seems so sad in Inquisition (at least to me) even if you pick humorous Hawke.

Both inquisition and origins have major decisions where you "know" what's right and wrong and you can always do the right thing.
In origins you can be a monster of a person, yes, but you kinda need to be roleplaying too make "evil" decisions. Save the elves and cure the werewolves, destroy the anvil so it can't be used to enlave people as it's bound to be, save both Connor and Isolde, save the remaining mages at the tower... Except for deciding who will be the king of Orzammar, there's always an intermediate, ethical path that seems the rigtheous one.
In inquisition you just can't be evil, a stupid jerk at most.
To the point: playing Dragon age 2 had me looking at the screen for minutes figuring out what i should do. There are truly grey decisions as the game makes an actual effort to show the good and bad sides in every faction. I found that amazing, honestly.
I hope for remaster, with polished maps and better game mechanics (fuck the enemies falling of sky at my back), cause this plot is fricking amazing, loved it back to back.

i think its more the case that an outside influence (game sounds producer) remixed her vocals in a more commercial manner befitting a multi-mill video game. it worked out really well as her usual base is a bit more edgy, bohemian and less mass market, but mixing her unique tone in this way paid off with a much more palatable version

It’s also kind of sad that Hawke doesn’t have a major role in DA: I. Which is also sadder that Hawke is also the weakest protagonist between the three.
The HoF is a Grey Warden and lore wise their pretty much the fantasized Captain America. Their stronger, faster and even can plan out battles a head of time before. Plus having the DLC they can use their actual Darkspawn blood to buff themselves or to deal damage to their enemies (DLC portion). But like all powerful heroes, the HoF have one weakness: The Calling. Which according to DA: I lore, their trying to free all of their Warden comrades from it.
The Inquisitor main gimmick is to close rifts, enter the rift physically and opening rifts is from the anchor. Even then they still got an army behind them. The character is sworn to defend Thedas from a bigger threat. But during the Trespasser DLC, they can close to disband the Inquisition entirely. But take the Anchor away and like Hawke, the Inquisitor is just a human being who’s is destine on bigger things.

    • @VenhedisKaffas
      @VenhedisKaffas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Same. It's still my favourite game out of all three. I loved Origins and Inquisition but DA2 was just something entirely different. There was no saving the world plot. It was just a story about characters. It became so much more personal because, instead of fighting for the entire world, you fight for people you are much closer to. The characters were great. Maybe because the game entirely focused on them instead of a giant goal. All the companions follow Hawke for *Hawke* instead of a bigger goal for the good of Thedas. I could go on about this for days but the point is, I love this game and it gets too much shit. This amazing game was made in only one year. I'm impressed.

Listen to the lyrics. Especially as a romance Lavellen, this is insane.
Solas has lied to you, stolen your heart and all you knew of your history, and he watches or 'haunts' you from the fade/your dreams.
The ghost in the chorus could work for those that drank from the well and with mythal, now him, having control over you.
And finally, 'When you kiss me, I am happy enough to die' and 'I love you so much, I'm gonna let you kill me', could come down to the inquisitor knowing that they're going to die if they can't convince solas or that because they love him so much, they'll let him kill them.
