Dylan Cease was one of the biggest breakout stars of the 2022 season. His refined slider is not only arguably the best pitch in baseball, it has completely altered Cease's career trajectory. Cease does have his shortcomings on the mound, but the historic nature of these shortcomings is what makes his breakout season so intriguing. To put it simply, he's "effectively wild".

Going from 3 years around league average to top 3 is pretty nuts, that’s a big jump…my hats off if he did it with only mechanical adjustments.
Adam Ottavino is the best example of effectively wild I think I've seen play. His slider is so insane, it's completely uncontrollable. Hes had outings where he struck out 3 guys, gave up no hits, but gave up 1 ER... because he walked 5 guys. You either whiffed badly or took a ball with him lol

I was at that cease almost no hitter game that slider was cool to watch from the stands
Just imagine how good he will be once he stops walking so many guys. Cease is still a young pitcher and is already dominant so imagine once he matures and gets a better command of the zone. Barring injuries Cease could have a 4-5 year run as the best pitcher in baseball he is that good.
1:30 I was at that game, my brother is one of the ball boys and my sister is part of pride crew. Very very proud to say I watched Cease pitch before he was cool. Hopefully he’s even better next season 💪

It's July 25th, 2024, and Dylan Cease just threw a No-Hitter. Also, to cap it off. Mr. Luis Arreaz handed the ball to Cease afterward with a smile.

Cease keeps his fastball above the strike zone now and throws sliders and curves for strikes
That was the major change in why his slider looks different. He tunnels everything with his neck level fastball and not many pitchers do that or even can.

War is a dumb stat
Sports writers and fans need to stop putting the label “historic” on shit that’s not actually historic. Yes, Cease had a great year, but so have a plethora of other pitchers over the years. The word has lost all meaning in sports
He was talking about his streak of games with 1 or fewer ER. That was a record, thus it fits the definition of historic.
