A Novel Strategy for Treating Anxiety Disorders

  • In this 6 minute video, Dr. Wilson talks about the possibility of and advantages of perceiving treatment as a mental game when working with panic disorder, social anxiety and performance anxiety, phobias, OCD, and generalized anxiety.
From "Strategic Treatment of Anxiety Disorders". To view the full course, including 6 CE credits, go to www.psychsem.com/onlineCourses...
Course Description: Anxiety Disorders are the most common mental disorder, affecting nearly 1 in 5 adults each year. They take over peoples' lives by causing them to develop seemingly irrational rules in order to cope. Five anxiety disorders phobias, panic, social anxiety, generalized anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) control people by generating an absolute standard for certainty and comfort. This workshop will examine the common psychological aspects of this mental game, along with specific manifestations for each disorder. Using cognitive-behavioral principles, therapists will learn a strategic approach on how to help their patients find the courage and motivation to challenge their old beliefs and attitudes and rid themselves of this debilitating fear by confronting it head-on. Practical methods will be presented and demonstrated to enable patients to ignore the content of their obsessive worries and to explore the feeling of uncertainty rather than fleeing from it. After the presentation of general concepts, the workshop will focus on the treatment of panic disorder and OCD. For panic disorder, participants will learn how to divide and conquer: to interrupt anticipatory anxiety and then to manage physical symptoms using cognitive strategies, paradox, pattern disruption, exposure and interoceptive exposure, and peel away the ever-present "safety crutches." For OCD patients, participants will learn that persuading patients to adopt a new frame of reference is the therapist's primary task. This persuasive strategy, begun in the first session, will frame the entire treatment protocol. Concrete examples of interventions for both obsessions and rituals will be offered.

    1. Refuse to be comfortable or certain
    2. Move toward threat
    3. Invest into it
    4. Risk losing something that want to keep (i.e. beliefs, security, being right)
    5. Accept & be willing to be influenced by the moment, environment, discomfort/pain
    6. Be satisfied even if world doesn't bend

Kamaraj, Meditation heals anxiety as it reprogrames the mind. Watch alternate nostril breathing meditation videos on Google and do it for 5 to 10 minutes if possible twice a day. You can sit on a chair or on the ground and do it. Inhale-exhale slowly and feel the relaxation flowing through your mind and body. Negative thoughts will reduce. Shyaaam Sir, Mentor. Make meditation a daily habit to enjoy life.

Very nice message and very helpful! Timely for me, as well because my OCD has been much worse lately. I know I must resist the compulsion to perform the ritual and be willing to accept the discomfort. A mental game, huh? Could it actually be satisfying and even fun to resist the rituals? Maybe even empowering? I have hope!

Anxiety is a sensation that wants resistance, the less you resist (Elkhart we judge to much) and accept that you don’t need certainty because it doesn’t exist! It’s a mental construct designed to reinforce (the monster cannot be satiated) your own mental slavery.

There are some activities that are pleasurable and others that allow for intrusive thoughts. Realistically only probably a quarter of a percentage of people do not spend a lot of time entertaining themselves in one way or the other. But most people also do not spend all their time entertaining or distracting themselves. I think the idea of being responsible is scary, and that talking or watching these types of video can cause anxiety. However realistically entertaining though the high contracts and guilt might drive someone towards doing things that are more comfortable more of the time. A way to break this up is to set a timer for ten minutes during the time you are entertaining yourself and do 1 minute of things that are intrusive. A pain in the butt? No maybe not...as the neural chemicals levels in the brain do tend to level out. And spending one minute a in ten doing something negative is not all that bad...the brain can get used to interruptions.

The idea is to level out the highs and the lows so that one can have better mental health and clarity.

I know you didn't ask ME my opinion, but may I share how I work some tools to help myself? I have had anxiety disorder since I was seven years old. I am 58. FOR ME, and I'm NOT suggesting this works for everyone. But, for me, when I have to go somewhere outside the house, I do it like we eat an elephant, one bite at a time. Also, the more I stay in my home, the harder it is to get out. I am on five medications for anxiety and depression and I have PTSD. This year, for the first time in 30 YEARS, I voted for the presidency. I made a plan of escape if it were too anxiety inducing; I decided to drive to the school, remember where I parked for a quick get away, walked in the door, watched how to vote, so to speak, watched others for a while. then I had a plan, walk up to the first table, they had it like a car assembly line, so I didn't have to talk much, I did the job, and got out of there, into the safety of my car, I was shaking while unlocking it. I was SOOOOOOOOOOOO PROUD that I was able to do it!! I heard Joyce Meyer (christian preacher and hard ass) say, "do it afraid", and that was also my mantra. I also took a Xanax before I went. I told myself, "if at any time this becomes tooooooo uncomfortable, I give myself permission to LEAVE". So, I did a lot of prep work, used the tool of "one bite at a time" (we Italians associate everything with food! lol) and it really helped.
I use what I call tools ALL THE TIME to help myself.

Hi I have OCD but my ritual is very strange. I always blink or squeeze my left eye and I believe if I stop doing so bad things will happen. When I do the ritual my anxiety will go down alot. I did exposure once and there were some unpleasant things that really happened like finding out my bed had bed bugs and falling down but nothing serious of any sort. My OCD somehow got worse after that and my belief in bad things really happening if I dont squeeze my left eye kept becoming stronger.

I had strange rituals as well sometimes I still do them unconsciously learn about ocd how it functions and how you can ease up the anxiety I highly recommend the book when anxiety attacks it changed my life for the better i still struggle with ocd but as of now my battle is at even odds I am no more on the losing side, keep your head up talk with someone about the condition you have and fight it head on because no matter what obsessions you have ocd will always be there and it will try to strike push through the anxiety, doubt, pain and embarrassment and get your life together. This crap almost made me kill myself don't let it take over your life you must fight it.

My psychiatrist told me why bad things don’t happen while I sleep as I am not conscious to do my ritual and I was like oh yea that’s right maybe all this is bullshit after all. Then ocd came up with another thought that I’m doing REM sleep so I was actually doing the ritual. It seems like I can never defeat this demon.
