1783 is a nice pour! I like a tiny amount to prep my pallet before having a higher proof drink! 15 bucks here and ET Lee 400 to 500

I think EW 1783 is a great bourbon, especially in it's latest version (increase from 86 to 90 proof). It's also supposedly 6-8 years old, and I've heard ETL is allegedly 9 years old. ETL is good, and in the control state of Ohio it's $38 but of course it's lottery only. BT thinks that ETL is worth $38, and they make a profit on it at that price. Anyone that spends $300 on ETL is going to be disappointed when they taste it. In Ohio EW 1783 is $20 for a 750 and $35 for a 1.75 liter. I've tried to steer folks to 1783 but am not usually successful; everyone wants the BT stuff.

Ohio’s liquor distribution is a damn joke. Every city on 30 gets NOTHING

@@moobutt Granted it's not perfect, but from my many trips to MI, IN and KY I'd say it's not all peaches and cream elsewhere, either. Sorry to hear about the 30 thing; just looked at the map and I can see your point. Seems like most of the good stuff lands in Columbus, but we see a decent amount in SW Ohio too.

King isn't wrong. People are brand-chasing rather than quality-chasing. The wild part is when someone tastes ETL and *then* say it's worth $300. Hype can do weird things to perception.

Erin & Josh--you are how I fight my whiskey FOMO. THANK YOU!
Elmer T Lee is $300 to $500 near me, which is certifiably insane, and figure I will never get to try it, but now I don't care as much. 😅

We actually make our scoring rubric available for download over on Patreon in the Whiskey Nerd tier but it's not nearly as complicated as it looks--it's a template we built that has all the categories we score with 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 point markings for each category that we can easily circle to keep track of our scoring (and to make sure we don't forget a category while we're filming). Then we scribble notes all over it and it turns into a hot mess as well. 😂

Well said, Jacob. Stagg Jr is one of our favorite examples (Josh likes it a lot, Erin not so much) because it's just barrel proof 8-10 year Kentucky bourbon. There is a LOT of that on the market, and Buffalo Trace isn't doing anything special. To use beef as an example, it's not like Buffalo Trace is turning out wagyu filet mignon steaks while all the other distilleries are making bargain basement ground chuck hamburger meat. 8-10 year bourbon is 8-10 year bourbon despite what the hype train would have folks believe. I don’t care specifically about how much a bottle costs, per se. I tend to look more at the value. So, an absolute favorite, is worth $100 to me. A decent quality whiskey is not worth $50+ when I know I can get Knob Creek, Rare Breed or OGD 114 for less..

A man after our own heart. Value is perhaps the single biggest factor in all our reviews, and everything we cover is always weighed against what else is out there on the market for a comparable price. Cheers to high quality, high value pours!

I wasn’t a fan of the Elmer T. Lee when I tried it.

Appreciate you watching and commenting, Erica! It's good for people to know that ETL isn't everyone's cup of tea before FOMO gets to them and they go spend $300 on a bottle.

@@stuffandwhiskey that was the conversation we had while I was trying it and I was very surprised at how bland it tasted to me.

Why does everyone chase BT stuff?

That's a fantastic question that we're still trying to figure out through blinds. We've yet to come up with an answer beyond "hype and FOMO." People want what they can't have, but we're pretty sure if shelves were flush with these products they'd sit and collect dust.

    What are pink runts????

Great question! The red hearts taste pink. 😂 It's that artificial strawberry flavor.

There used to be pink Runts candies in the shape of a heart, and they were the artificial strawberry flavor. There is still that same flavor, but circa 2007-2009 they made the color red. I still call them the pink Runts because that’s the color that I know that flavor as.

Oh oh oh, were those the candies candies that were shaped like different fruits? Ewww. I like candy bars!
