    Sometimes a situation escalates so quickly and we don't even realize it. It doesn't help that a lot of us girls were raised to be polite and preferably have a smile on our face. Well there will almost guaranteed be a situation in every girl's life where you have to say NO firmly. You don't owe a stranger friendliness, especially when you don't feel safe.

    • @surenderbeniwal8578
      @surenderbeniwal8578 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Sandy ! You're absolutely right, i too agree with it. I personally don't give a damn to be polite, when i sense a tinniest bit of *red flag* situation, as Holly puts it, i can have on a pretty mean glare at that time !
      Sometimes I feel really sad as well as scared ,thinking about these situations, we find ourselves in unintentionally, many a times !
      Hope every girl/women is strong enough to get away from such situation!🙏

      I personally feel that God has given us a special 6th sense ( aka our intuition/ gut feeling) , that helps every moment we find ourselves in ; especially girls (i strongly believe) can sense if the person looking at them is watching u intently or inappropriately or something of the sort . Always trust that sense bestowed to u !

    Guys like that are often cowards and look for easy targets, whether they’re looking to seduce someone they think is vulnerable or victimize someone. It’s so unfortunate but having a “stare” and being forceful with men who are like that is often enough to scare them off because you are no longer “easy.” I’m really sorry you went through this!

      hmmm yes, it's so bad and definitely not ok. i am glad i used my instinct and adopted the 'evil holly stare' as soon as i realised that i could get myself in a bad situation!

    It's sad we live in a society where, as women, we are still the ones having to adjust for our own safety. The idea of having to just "move on" from an encounter like that is the reality a lot of us are all too familiar with.
    It genuinely hurts to think about what could've happened to that girl.
    I think it's really important that you're bringing light to situations like these. Thank you for using your platform not only to inspire, but to educate. I know this was a story time, but it's really uplifting to see influencers, such as yourself, start conversations that are not nearly talked about enough.

      @@comdrive3865 Hey, I'm not sure if your reply was directed at my comment or Holly's reply but I'm really sorry if my comment came off this way. I was just speaking from a place of personal experience dealing with situations similar to this. I genuinely wanna apologise because I didn't realise that what I wrote comes off like I wasn't considering the other side. I just hope you see that I never mentioned that "guys don't suffer" and it was never my intention either. I'm sorry again, but also thank you for pointing this out to me though.

    I've got a similar story from my first time solo travelling in New Zealand. I'm gonna break it down so it won't be extremely long. So I was staying at this small hostel on Steward Island for a few days and on my first evening there I was sitting in the common room chatting with a couple people I had just met when an older dude joined our conversation. He was French and I would guess that he was between 55 and 60 years old (I was 19 at the time). I kinda got a really weird vibe from him. The way he was talking was just really pretentious and overly self confident. But I was still being nice and polite because I wasn't sure if maybe he was just socially awkward and acting strange for that reason. It was really hard to tell. A few days later I was coming back into the hostel at around 11pm because I had been out trying to spot a Kiwi. I had to walk past the common room to get to my room and that dude came up to me with a bottle of wine and tried to convince me to have some with him. I think he was a little drunk as well. I was not really comfortable so I told him no and went to my room. So 5min later when I was in my room (I was alone in there) I heard a knock on the door and it was him again with his wine and he tried to convince me again although I kept saying no. He must have watched me because I never told him where my room was and you couldn't see from the common room either. And then he suddenly reached out and touched my face (between my chin and my cheek). It was the "I'm about to kiss you" kind of touch. It freaked me out so much I just closed the door in his face and didn't really dare go back out for a while.
    But in general I always felt very safe travelling in New Zealand. And would always encourage people to try solo travelling. Scary and uncomfortable things can happen everywhere. As long as you make responsible decisions and listen to your gut feeling you'll not be in more danger travelling than you would be at home.

    • @Lavenderletters

      Oh my God this is so creepy! To come and knock on your room after you have clearly told him no is too much! This is the only reason I could never muster the courage to travel alone!

      oh my goodness 😰 i got the chills reading this! good on you for just closing the door!!! i hope you spoke to others around you at the time just so that they made sure you were ok? as i said, things like this can happen anywhere, no matte how safe the country/area is!

      @HollyGabrielle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      also, thank you for sharing your experience! i hope that these stories ... don't put people off solo travelling!! ... but just help them realise that red flags need to be spotted and dealt with as soon as possible!

    • @ginger_but_not_really3286
      @ginger_but_not_really3286 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HollyGabrielle I absolutly agree. I also hope that these stories don't scare people. I'm always the first person to encourage people to go solo travelling and to be fair I have got a much scarier story that happened in my hometown, so it really doesn't make a difference whether you go travelling or not. But I could tell hundreds of funny stories and happy memories that happend to me while solo travelling. I just think that sometimes it is important to also tell the scary stories because travelling often gets romanticised (especially on social media) which leads to people having unrealistic expectations when they go on their first solo trip. Yes, travelling is great and fun but it can also be stressful or difficult at times, which is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. In the end challenging situations are what make us grow. If you think everyone else is having these carefree trips where everything goes smoothly but then something challenging happens on your trip it is easy to fall into the "Why can't I have a carefree travel experience?" sort of thinking. Even if you have some bad experiences the rest of your trip will most likely be amazing and filled with happiness. I think it is important to talk about both sides, so thank you for sharing your experiences so honestly.
      Oh yeah btw, we met at the vegan surfcamp last summer. And I've been wanting to say I'm so happy for you that you seem to have had that much fun solo travelling. I was really sad for you when you weren't feeling it as much in the beginning because I already knew how amazing it can be. ;)

    • @ginger_but_not_really3286
      @ginger_but_not_really3286 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lavenderletters Haha... Thanks. Before you've tried it solo travelling seems much scarier than it actually is. If you really want to do it, then go do it. You won't regret it and it will be life changing. As long as you make responsible choices, listen to your gut and don't do reckless stuff you're just as safe as you woud be at home. I've had a much scarier thing than the story above happen to me in my hometown (which is also a very safe place). Bad stuff can happen anywhere and I wouldn't want to miss out on all of the joy solo travelling can bring because of it. You go, girl! ;)

    Situations like this happen to me all the time, guys especially older men try to talk to me all the time (I hate it) but when Im with friends or a guy they never try to talk to me. It's probably because I look like a young naive girl that could be taken advantage of. Im 32 but look fairly young for my age. Some old men are predators they're just trying to see if they have a chance with you. Im glad you're smart enough to spot these red flags!

    Creepy guys stories can happen anywhere not just while travelling. I was in my hometown, it was back when i was in high school, i had just gotten a new book from the library and went to sit on a bench by the river, there are not many people there during the day, so i was reading my book, enjoying my summer holiday and then this guy just came and sat on the same bench and started talking to me, gave me kinda a weird vibe. He looked like he was in his late 20s maybe 30s, but i was 16 so it was a bit strange. I was being polite and chatted a bit, gave him a fake name when he asked me, came up with an excuse and just left. After that i saw him a couple of times walking through the town, always alone and he would always say hi to me and pick a random girls name xD
    i think that our parents teach us to be polite to these random guys just because you never know how the situation might develop.
    I had another situation that was late at night when me and my friend hung out. A random guy came and sat next to us and was like 'do you know where i can exchange 100 euros? if you do then we can go somewhere and party' and he was persistent. So she talked to him very politely declining and eventually he left.

  • @Daveaaaaa

    Let's say the last guy is not a peeping tom and was just trying to pick up Holly. I am not sure of the appropriate boundaries for an older guy trying to chat up a younger adult woman. There are plenty of age gap relationships around. Catherine Zeta Jones was 27 when she was in a relationship with Michael Douglas (25 years older). Perhaps that was 'okay' because she was well into adulthood? I understand how it can be intimidating for a 22 year old to be approached by a middle aged man - and I think it is inappropriate. Holly was brave to ask him to back off and he acted appropriately in the end by backing off.

    Book recommendation! "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker (I think that is the author's name). Really great book talking about following your gut instincts and how people can use society's push for people, especially women, to be polite against you.

    This is crazy how there is this "circle jerk" community/trend that people talk about absolutely normal situations that have nothing or very little weird with them and make them out to be some creep "stalking", "creeping", "praying" situation. I think these people watch too much netflix and instagram and have no idea what real life is. Just because someone is older doesn't take away their right to try to be open and meet and talk to people.
    I am 19 and I've experienced this countless times, specially on vacations. Only people my age act like their "too cool" and would never try to start a conversation or even smile at people. I've never in my life been approached by someone my age (other than school by someone I kinda know) to just try and meet or even say hi, because they are so elitist and just lock in their little group like tribal people. Just a week ago I was at the pool with my friend and I had a towel with my favorite sports team logo on it and some older guy (35-40) approached me and asked me if I was a fan and said that he's from the country that team is from. We talked for a long time and even played some volleyball.

      nothing wrong with trying to talk to people, even if you are older doesn't mean you lose your right to be able to interact with anyone without it being considered creepy. There are many people who just try to be friendly and come out of their comfort zone and then someone ruins their day by being so elitist and self absorbed

    maybe he purposely spoke to that girl because he knew you were watching, then left female shoes outside the door so you would think she stayed there... that might be why he leaves his shoes outside the door so he can do the same to other girls.
