Because most those dead guys are Ukrainians.
Because Russia’s expanded its borders by about 100 000 aquare miles.
Because Russia’s population has increased by about 5000 000 with the new territories it took.
Because Russia now has large new resources of oil, gas, other minerals etc.
Maybe what Russia got makes the cost worth it?

He thought this would be quick and was wrong, he lost so much support from his own country and others. The multiple medical problems that Putin had to face turned out to be absolute nonsense. You are the only person around that still believes that and no media whatsoever has mentioned that for the last two years.
Putin's internal support is higher than ever. Even the Financial Times and the Economist (both rabidly anti Russian) recently confirmed it but, well, you are better informed than the FT and Economist together.
If Russia's equipment is not up to the task, how is it possible that the West has been constantly escalating the power of the hardware sent to Ukraine, to no avail.

'Cold calculator' is a very generous description for the callous little opportunist who got into power by accident and the gross miscalculation of Eltsin's people. And too much is made of his KGB training, often incorrectly alluding of him as a 'spy' that he never was (only a backroom bureaucrat) . He did apply to become 'an illegal' alright, but was rejected for being psychologically unstable- nothing particularly 'cold' but quite the opposite.

My reaction exactly. If Putin is a calculator, often as not he seems to add two and two and arrive at five. Did he really `calculate` that his one-week or so SMO would be an ongoing full-scale war more than two years later and counting? That NATO would be revitalized and stronger than at any point in the last thirty years? Etc. etc. Rather, as you say, he is an opportunist, and as superficial as he is callous. I once read Lenin described as a `man intoxicated by his own ruthlessness`. That seems to fit Putin better than `cold calculator`.

When you see armed forces massing near a border, don't you move some 10% to 25% of that force of your own forces as a clearly defensive counterforce? The border of Ukraine in January/February 2022 is the reason airborne forces with air support exist to deter. General Hodges is right. There was a failure of deterrence. Putin was not deterred by whatever capability Ukraine had by itself.

    • @timtrewyn453
      @timtrewyn453 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@jakub.kubicek Zelensky got escalation anyway. On that premise, one would withdraw all forces far from the border, showing weakness and fear and facilitating invasion. Part of the defensive posture is to have ranged weapons ready to return fire. A defensive force would reduce and confuse the attacker's forces, and then would be supplemented by reserves that were not first deployed to the border. I don't see how weakness at a border deters invasion, if it can be deterred at all. Personally, I have nothing to show me that Her Putin and Russia are about to collapse. If you look at the European history, you will see that the number of war years greatly outscores the number of years with peace. So, statistically at least, the years of peace are periods of pause between two wars. And for this reason, in those years you have to prepare for war. Only if you are very strong, the opponent will avoid attacking you.
After the Second World War, the West felt the danger and did this. But after the fall of the USSR and the collapse of the communist bloc, the West believed that the danger had disappeared for good and completely disarmed. Not only that, but an avalanche of "democratic" chimeras came, which weakened the West even more. Practically, the West has put all possible obstacles in its way to prevent it from defending itself. And the declared adversaries (they never shied away from declaring this), Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, silently prepared for war. They prepared not only their armies, but also their populations, economies, policies, means of propaganda and disinformation.
The awakening to reality came in February 2022. Which even now the populations of the West do not take seriously.
It doesn't matter that you are afraid and because of that you want to be a pacifist. It matters what the opponent wants. And if he wants to attack you, he will attack you. And if you are weak and/or cowardly, you only encourage him to attack you. So prepare to speak Russian!

paul7765, Utter, utter nonsense. You really don't know the history or have any understanding of the background to this war. You write as though the war only began in February 2022 when it began in 2014 with a western backed coup that overthrew the democratically elected pro Russian president of Ukraine that started a civil war in Ukraine. Nato has long wanted to recruit Ukraine into Nato and Russia made it clear that was totally unacceptable to them so why should it be any surprise to anyone that Russia invaded in 2022 after Nato had refused to to even discuss Ukraine remaining neutral? The invasion was prompted by Nato insisting ukraine could join Nato which is an anti Russian alliance. Ukraine is right in Russia's backyard and Russia would no more accept Ukraine joining an anti Russian military alliance than the USA would accept Mexico joining an anti American military alliance or the UK would accept the republic of ireland joining an anti British military alliance after they achieved independence.
The USA, by the way, has a long history of invading other countries in the Americas and overthrowing the government and putting in place one acceptable to them and, as for changing the boundaries of european states by force, Nato set the post cold war precedent for this that russia followed by bombing Serbia and forcibly annexing Kosovo from Serbia.
Finally Nato and western interventions have left behind a succession of failed states firstly in former Yugoslavia, then Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and now Ukraine, all of which have also resulted in millions of refugees fleeing to the west to the detriment of western nations nato is supposed to be protecting! Nato, under the current political and military leadership, is no longer a force for good acting in the interests of the nations they serve. This is complete contrast to the role nato played during the cold war with the USSR.

I disagree with the analysis of the russian push in kharkiv region. It was pushed by a few 1000 russian soliders over non existence defence lines due to corruption on ukraine part. It was never designed to take large amounts of territory russia didn't commit a large enough force. it was design to make ukraine commit there reserved. Satellite imaging shows russia has being digging trench lines and building defensive works. the russian strategy is to hold as long as possible and make ukraine commit as much as possible. 10days ukraine have being making counter attacks in that area currently very little to show for it.

100% agree that the West, US/UK/EU, need to massively increase war materials production. Combined the members of Nato need to have at least 10 million 155mm shells, and an equivalent numbers of all other missiles and air defense systems. Had Nato been able to provide Ukraine 20 Patriot (or Patriot like systems) in early 2022 then Russia would have already ended the war.

My perspective is that there's a substantial number of political leaders and voters in the West who have no stomach for direct military conflict with Russia and who will simply give Ukraine, the Baltics, Finland, Poland, eastern Germany, and... ??? to Russia. I hope I am wrong.
