      Pump is a basic pond pump from lowes and it's inside of a pot that has a hole in the back for the wire and hose that goes out the back and up to the filter pot. Inside the filter pot are bioballs, pebbles and filter pads. I drilled a hole in the front of the filter pot for water return.

    nice dude. you should maybe build a small plant bed around the top. just slant the bedding at an angle and place some shrubs, you may get butterfly's and stuff to drink from the pond then.

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      billy abbott that's a good idea. Plant it where? Beside the filter on the slate or on the deck railing above the pond? I get a mockingbird drinking from the return waterfall ha.

    • @billyabbott9094
      @billyabbott9094 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, where the blue faced pot is, along there and round the back of the filter pot. You'd have to pull the whole setup out maybe 5-10inches. But the soil close to the water will attract more insects, birds and other critters. You could maybe do with getting a more sturdy route for bigger animals to get out too. Sometimes things like mice may venture up, fall in and a lilly pad is not strong enough to support them :/ But i dunno, i love gardening so i always like to throw out ideas! good luck man!

    How do you keep the fish healthy , do you change some of the water regularly, & how often do you feed them,

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The plants do most of the work keeping everything healthy and water crystal clear but I do a 5 gallon water change every month and I take a gallon out every week to water the outdoor plants. The filter pot had a bunch of media and the gravel bed in the pond is about 4 inches deep. Still going strong coming up on 7 years now. I feed the fish twice a day during the warmer months and never in the winter.

    I have a question. Cannot find an answer in any tutorial. How and what fartilizer one can use for waterlilies' pond with guppies in it? Won't the fertilizer like “NPK 20 20 20" harm and kill guppies or Koi?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never used fertilizer so I'm not sure.

  • @tnyberg67

    So do you take the fish out in the winter or do you keep enough water open for the fish to survive? It sounds like you let the plants freeze in the winter and they come back? Can you speak more about the wintering over of the pond?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fish and plants winter over. If the pond freezes I create an opening for oxygen exchange and they do fine. I never feed them over the winter. Cattails and lily just "die off" over the winter and then come back in spring.

  • @elementkx
    @elementkx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice pond! How cold does it get round you if you can leave them outside?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It gets below freezing some times in VA where I'm located. They can survive. If it freezes over you just have to drill a few holes through the ice or put a pot of boiling water on top of the ice to create a hole for gas exchange.

    • @elementkx
      @elementkx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tedlambert12 Gotcha, I live in Illinois. That pond would be a block of ice in Winter. Maybe I can find some sort of heating pad I can sit it on.

    What did you use for the liner and how did you attach it?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's just attached at the top with staples. The liner was the thickness recommended and purchased from Lowes. I laid it in flat on the bottom and trimmed the excess. Then I started the liner and kept folding it over as it turned with the shape of the top of the barrel.

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't see why not if you use a pond liner inside. If yours was once an actual liquid holding barrel at some time it may still hold water but I'd recommend a pond liner.

  • @AS1ANAM3R1CAN
    @AS1ANAM3R1CAN 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you don't mind me asking, how much was your budget for this project. Do you always have the filter running? I'm looking to start one for my Rosy red minnows.

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Asia Pereira I didn't really have a budget but the barrel was $50 or so and the pump was another $50 or $60. Probably have $150 in it total after filter media, liner, gravel, plants and etc. I turn off the pump in the winter when freezing. Rosy Reds would work perfectly.

    • @AS1ANAM3R1CAN

      Ted Lambert Awesome, thanks for the reply. I was looking at some other builds for whiskey barrel ponds and yours is by far the most efficient and beautiful looking.

  • @rickrich5662
    @rickrich5662 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you show us how you fabricated the filter?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick Rich the actual filtration media inside the pot are bioballs like you would use in an aquarium, aquarium gravel and the foam pads to catch larger objects that pass through the pump. The bioballs and the gravel give the bacteria a place to live and the waterfall back into the tank oxygenates the water. The "filter" is just a nice pot that I drilled a small u shaped groove in the back for the return hose to sit on and the slot that is the return waterfall was drilled out with a drill bit. I drilled 4 small holes beside each other in a line and then just used the bit to connect the holes and create a slot. Works great.

    Do you have to put the plant in somethingg or do they just kind of stay in the wateR?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Faye Raively I kept the plants in the small pot they came in and sat them on a mesh pot that's upside down to elevate them closer to the surface. I then dropped the gravel used for the substrate onto the top of the plant in the pot to give it some weight to help hold it in place. I cut holes in the sides of the mesh plaatic pots so the fish can swim through so you don't really lose any water volume or swimming room for the fish. Sitting the plants on terracotta pots or large rocks would decrease the water volume...little trick the pond store recommended. I'm going to do an updated video soon, waiting for my water lily to flower! Let me know if you have any questions.

      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bonnie Creevy That was a learning experience for me...bought the liner at Lowes and basically put the entire liner in the barrel so the bottom was flat and then started cutting. Cut off large section around the top and then started doing little folds going in the same direction around the top lip and stapling it down. Then cut off the excess around the top.

    What happens to the fish in the winter?

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aztec Girl They basically hunker down in the bottom part of the pond that doesn't freeze. I make sure the entire surface doesn't freeze so there can still be room for gas exchange so they can breathe. I also don't feed them because their metabolisms slow down so much.

    • @Toltecgrl
      @Toltecgrl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ted Lambert oh okay. I wanted to try this on my back patio. But then I got to wondering what I do with fish when it freezes. The coldest it gets in the part of California that I live in is 20°. How do you keep it from freezing entirely? Thanks for your reply. I love your idea!

    • @tedlambert12
      @tedlambert12  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aztec Girl Thank you! I'm going to do another video soon! I break up any surface ice that I see every time I let the dogs outside. Like this year, if we have extended cold periods and it freezes over completely, I do a trick I read...boil a pot of water and them just rest the pot on the top of the ice..it'll melt it quickly and provide a nice, round unfrozen surface area!

      Great idea! I just got back from a UK garden centre with exact same barrel and idea. I’m using a piece of deck board which I burned with a blow torch to char the wood and age it. This will hold the pot like yours which will contain lava rock and 2 sponge filters. I already had a spare aquarium power head to act as a pump. Just waiting on my pond liner to arrive so I can fill up. My barrel was £29. I think all in, I’m looking at a total cost of £50 and 4 hours work. I hope mine looks as good as yours when it’s grown in 👍
