  • It's easy to install recessed lighting when you have an attic to run the wires. But how do you add ceiling lights when there's no attic above? In this video, we show how we wired 11 recessed lights in the downstairs ceiling.

    Back in the 80s, when I was installing alarm systems, we had long drillbits like those, but they had a hole towards the tip that you could tie a string onto and pull a wire back. Very convenient.
    Edit: I just saw you realized there was a hole at the end of the drillbit after I left this comment. LOL

    This is a realistic video showing what it takes to get this done in a real world situation. Too many videos out there show this where they have easy access to an attic. Anyone can run lights with a wide open attic but this guy is showing what most people will encounter. Rafters, studs and insulation are all the things that make this kind of job a bear!!!

    I am about to do something similar but I am contemplating just taking all the sheetrock down, running the wires and then installing the sheetrock, cutting the holes and going from there. Either way you have to do sheetrock work, a seam is a seam.

      Any tricks on how to remove staples that you can reach (need more slack)

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you need 2 more feet, forget the wire staples; you’ll need to replace the wire or add a junction box. But you can’t bury a junction box inside a wall or ceiling. Easiest to install an old work junction box with a blank plate. Not invisible, but a LOT easier than pulling a new wire.
      FWIW, I have a blank plate in my ceiling where the builder pre-wired for a light, but we don’t need one there. We got used to it and don’t even see it anymore.

  • @tomg2940
    @tomg2940 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was a very informative video, thanks. I've always wondered if there is an electrical code requirement to fasten those boxes to a structure. Most people just seem to put them up loose. It seems a little odd to me that you need to put in strain reliefs from the romex to the box, then just leave the box loose. Not that anything would be pulling on the wires once it is installed, though.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably would need to be attached for new construction, just like you need to secure wires with wire staples, so they don’t pose a risk with the drywall installation.

    • @ericoxford7069
      @ericoxford7069 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@handydadtv I plan on using the PN# SP4IN3KWH4P which is the 4" low voltage lights. My son's room is a decent size for a bedroom (not sure of square footage at the moment) but only had a ceiling fan with a single bulb. I figured it's cheaper to buy and wire in the four Jullison lights rather than buying a multiple light retrofit kit for the ceiling fan. I already have the wire and connectors on hand with room in the attic for easy access. Even though the lights are IC rated I plan on building a box around them made out of sheet insulation to provide an air gap between the fixture and the blown in attic insulation.

    • @handydadtv

      Four lights will certainly brighten up the bedroom. Although they are dimmable, be sure to check the compatible dimmer list.

    @handydadtv Thanks for this video. It's very helpful. However, I am curious about how you rand the wires... You discussed using the existing wire after you pulled it and moved it to the location of your first light hole. However, starting at 8:19, you appear to run/snake an entirely new wire through your first hole back to the other holes you made for your remaining lights, but I did not see where you reconnected it back to the live wire and switch. What did I miss? lol Thanks so much again.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 6:29, that’s the old wire from the switch. At 7:04, I’m drilling through the blocking to run a wire to the other light across the room. At 8:19, I’m running a new wire to the second set of lights. Those three wires are connected at the first light. Hope that helps.
