I’m so glad you finally went to Newark for Portuguese food.
The ribs and chicken have so much flavor even without the bbq and hot sauce. They season it with just salt, keeping it simple. This technique, how they cook it, is so unique, I had a charcoal grill and rotisserie cage custom built, so that I can cook this way at home.
Love your videos, this one is extra special for me! Keep up the great work!!!!

Hey JL ... I'm glad you took my suggestion to try Calandra's bakery. Best Italian bakery in Newark.
Next time, if you want Portugese food, go to the Ironbound section of Newark. You don't even need a car. You can go by train. Ironbound starts right next to Newark Penn Station. Ferry St is the main street. Its loaded with Spanish, Portugese and Brazilian restaurants. Just pick one. It doesn't matter which one. They're all great and all have big portions.
Take another suggestion ... Try my favorite ... Casa Vasca on Elm St. Its a Basque restaurant ... from the Basque region in northeastern Spain near the Pyrenees mountains. Get the Paella Marinera, but don't try to eat it all at once.

The beauty 😍 about living in Central Jersey 🇯🇪 is it's proximity to New York City and Philadelphia which of course 😉 are two distinctly different cities with unique cuisines. I will always remember the tastes of my birth city Newark NJ. I love the way you display ❤️ the wonderful deliciousness of these areas. Have you traversed the Tri-state of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut? I have, as a kid visiting relatives in New York and Connecticut. I'd taste 🐸 frog legs in Brooklyn and curried goat stew in New Haven.

Hey JL! Como vai! Portuguese for "How you doin?" (Philly lingua)! LOL!!! I'm a Southwest Philly lady born and raised and now live in Northern Jersey. However, I work in Newark. You also gotta try Ferry Street Portuguese Barbecue which is in the Ironbound section of Newark...Ferry Street to be specific (89 Ferry Street, Newark, NJ 07105) not too far from Newark Penn Station! You must, must, must go there! Their grilled salmon, ribs and steak are the best as well as their arroyo (rice)...OMGGGG!!!! Also, every now and then I pick up custard tarts (also a portuguese dessert) from Calandra's on 6th Street off of Bloomfield Avenue which I see you already discovered. :0 Don't hurt yourself...don't hurt yourself! LOL! All of the simple charcoal flavor and basic seasoning...nothing elaborate is via African Moorish historical influence on the Portuguese and also on the Spanish way of cooking (from 711-1492). As you might know, the African Moors taught both the Portuguese & the Spaniards how to season food, implement African cuisines from the African Moorish culture, introduced both countries to indoor plumbing, architecture, street gas lighting fixtures and soooo much more! This is why the African Moors occupied both Spain and Portugal for 781 years...peacefully (civil)!

I could eat that every day. Just simple good food. Ribs are my favorite to grill especially out camping. We usually fill a 16 Qt. cooler with them marinating in Ziploc bags and then we play games and the winner gets to choose the ones I'll grill low and slow for that nights rib eating frenzy. I'm talking about the big ribs that the bone is over 1 1/2" wide and the meat just slides off. You don't even have to chew them.

Portuguese food is some of the best food out there and really big up here on the East Coast tho I'm not familiar with New Jerseys way of Portuguese cooking some of the best you'll get here in the states is from Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, give it a try JL the food scene up here is a melting pot of ethnicities.

That was my spot when I lived in the North. Please go to BJ’s Pizzeria in East Orange next for their chicken cheesteak with potatoes!!
