I plastic weld all the time with a soldering iron. In my experience, the best results are achieved when you use the same type of plastic as the filler.

I have always had a SNEAKING suspicion that plastic could be easily melted together like this but never really tried or investigated, this is brilliant!

There's a whole theory behind it to make a correct plastic welding, thats why this kind of super fast 'how tos' shouldn't be used as learning material. In the first one for example, they mix different types of plastics and thats a big DON'T.

In most cases it doesn't hold up well. What happens when you melt it is that the oils deep inside the plastic get brought to the surface and begins the dry rot process much quicker

When I worked for IBM's refer department I never used aluminum tape or screens to do repairs on plastic cases. I just used a regular tip hot iron and if I needed any plastic to hold the pieces in place after repair a lot of times your cases because they were molded to create them would have extra pieces I could cut off and used to do the repair. After I was done usually you couldn't tell the problems or damage which there but if I needed to I would lightly sand the area and spray paint it and then use a small paintbrush

You can buy a kit to do this from most autobody/collision repair suppliers, it also comes with different types of plastic rods for different plastics 👍 we were actually having a hard time getting decent strength from the welds bet that mesh method makes it work perfect 👌
Also, SUPER IMPORTANT, those fumes are incredibly toxic, wear a respirator if your going to do this.

Best place to do is outside (if possible )
In the pass repair some motor parts in this way.
Old thing, but for a.first time it holded well.
Later sold the motor for parts.
And yes the Buyer had a complete list of the damage parts so no hidden suprises.

he used a zip tie, nylon (likely PA6), which is good on its own. The original piece looks like having a glossy styrene finish - made in China, likely ABS (or worse HIPS), far worse than the nylon. The self made tip has no temperature control, though. I personally use one of my temperature controlled soldering irons.

Yes, perform repairs near a fan blowing cross-wise over your work area or near a fume-extractor. Don't breath in the plastic vapors as they are toxic and carcinogenic.

Tried the first method (with a zip tie) on a plastic piece that had broken off of one of our refrigerator drawers...and it was a sizable piece that was part of one of the sides that rode along the groove to hold the drawer in place, so it had to be a strong weld. And it worked, thank you!

Very good demonstration. However Two details . One that specific nibs or tips for solder are available and those are better for performing such tasks . Two . specific plastic shold be used and unmatched plastics donot stick and then chip off . These must be kept in mind .

I did an online chat and they said I can return it. 20 minutes later they text me that for my inconvenience they are giving me a 10% discount. I then looked up how to repair plastic. This is so easy. So now I don’t have go through the hassle of returning, this will fix the problem. Thanks

You can even use pratley steel. Dont know if you get it overseas. Here in south africa we do. Ok pratley make different products. The one i mentioned is like most resins expocies one gets. You mix 2 parts together and apply it. I had a panel that had a crack in it. I used isolation ( electrical ) tape to seal the crack on the side thats visible, so the glue doesnt go through. I left panel to dry in sun for about 2 hours. After that i peeled of the tape and you coulndt see the crack.

A way easier way is to dissolve some ABS plastic in some acetone. Make it as thick or diluted as you need for the repair. Then use it like a glue or epoxy. Can be used for/with MOST plastics as the acetone will either "melt" or soften the other plastic (except for poly based) and when your done it is hard to tell where the repair was made. Have used this method to fabricate whole parts or missing pieces of a larger part. good vid over all.
