    Going to start ISTDP with Dr. Hoviatdoost on the Gold Coast Australia. I’ve tried plenty of therapies. My new psychiatrist is really excited for me to try it. Unfortunately, I’ve been around the block plenty of times, so I am doing my best just to give it a go. Your video has broken it down for me nicely Dr.Sia. I’ll let you all know how it goes, fingers crossed.

    I feel like this didn't actually say what it IS. More like a sales pitch for istdp, the same sales pitch that all therapies use.
    Maybe change the title of your answer to the question is "read a book or Google it"
    I did Google it, and this video came up.....

      Thank yiu for the feedback Sarah. Let me know your questions and I will answer them for you and make a video about it.
      Whatever you are wondering there are probably so many more people wondering. So do let me know please!

      Thank you Jigar, ISTDP is a great therapy so it is great that more and more people are becoming interested in it. Hopefully, more research will conducted into the therapy the coming years.

    Hi Sia! What does ISTDP specifically bring to the table that perhaps some other types of therapy miss when treating people? Could you discuss this in more depth?

    • @drsia2323
      @drsia2323  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Jasmine, thank you for this interesting question! At its core, ISTDP allows for corrective emotional experiences while reducing the automatic interaction patterns and negative self narratives we have to "repair" anxious and disorganized attachment related patterns and defenses in adults. I ought to make a video about this I think!

    What do you think about the term “attachment trauma”? I’ve come across it in a lot of ISTDP literature, which talks about complex mixed feelings arising from attachment trauma, which are then reactivated in present relationships, giving rise to anxiety and defences. But it seems to me that “attachment trauma” can range from clear cases of child abuse and neglect, right through to well-meaning parents that were overly anxious, thus unable to contain the child’s affect, resulting in insecure attachment. It doesn’t sit well with me that, to my understanding, this term “attachment trauma” (and for that matter the term “insecure attachment” as well) encompasses this entire range of situations without any inbuilt distinction, as the two ends of this spectrum are so vastly different. It just feels as though there should be some distinction in the terminology - if the boundaries of the word “trauma” are broadened so widely, doesn’t it lose some meaning?

    So all the therapies I am aware of would aim at exactly the example that you have given. Where’s the difference, other than the “short term”.

    • @drsia2323
      @drsia2323  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great comment! Many therapies are similar to ISTDP because they are based on psychodynamic principles whether practitioners agree to it or not (looking at you self-compassion based therapy and schema therapy).
      The big difference here is that we look at defences in the room and try to overcome them collaboratively, we do exposure to more than fear (vs behaviourism where exposure is to fear and anxiety stuff alone), and we help regulate imagery (in mindfullness you are in your own here), and we titrate therapy to dynamically fit each patient (means the more capacity you come in with the more intense therapy becomes).
      These are just some differences. To anyone who has tried they would say it feels and looks very different to anything else they have ever tried. Give it a go and let us know that you think!

    Thanks for this video. How short term is this type of therapy? I mean in comparison with traditional psychotherapy which I've heard may stretch on to years and years of endless sessions. Also can you recommend a reliable therapist in Tehran, Iran? Thank you🙏

    • @drsia2323
      @drsia2323  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Gordi, this therapy is relatively short-term with treatments varying from 4 hours upwards based on concerns. No effective therapy is endless so I hope you find a suitable one that works for you. I am not able to recommend a good reliable therapist in Iran as I have no connections there. I am sure you will receive better advise from existing health care professionals currently working in Iran about a suitable psychologist. Best of luck and thank you for following the channel!
