You are not alone in the [incorrect] use of the term "palmer". According to the international glossary of fly fishing terms, "Palmer is a method for wrapping a hackle feather over a section of the fly's body. In researching ancient flies, a TU chapter discovered that fly patterns based on a palmered body is a “tying technique of spiraling a hackle laterally along the shank or body of a fly; the hackled, artificial fly resembling the Palmer worm, a hairy, wandering tineid moth larva, dated 1651.” www.thelimpcobra.com While in both of these uses of the term palmer, they refer to hackle but the key terms to denote are 'technique' and 'spiraling'. With that, the term palmer (as it relates to fly tying) should be reserved for applying tying material in a spiral manner; hackle, tinsel, etc. In your video, you used palmer as the term for attaching the chenille. This is important because many young tiers may be instructed to palmer a material and do so incorrectly or instruct someone to palmer when in fact they mean 'wrap'.

First off Joel, thanks for watching! Thanks also for the education here. I have always used the term "Palmer" for wrapping a material that will cover the entire hook shank weather it is open or closed vs wrapping a material in one position on the hook. I appreciate your intent to help others understand how to utilize fly tying terminology correctly! - Brady
